“Led by the intrepid Ji Firepaw, the Huojin Pandaren are quick to act and quicker to fight for what they believe in.”

— In-game faction description

The Huojin Pandaren, often shortened simply to the Huojin,[1] are a group of Horde pandaren led by Master Master Ji Firepaw that adhere to the pragmatic Huojin philosophy, one of the two main schools of thought among the residents of the Wandering Isle. They firmly believe injustice must be met with a swift and decisive response, though this response should be flexible and calculated for the situation at hand; to the Huojin, the end will always ultimately justify the means. When the Wandering Isle pandaren reestablished contact with the outside world, the Huojin would be drawn to the scrappy practicality of the Horde.[2] Since then, they have taken part in many conflicts and events throughout Azeroth alongside their new allies.

Those who follow the path of the Houjin are impulsive, quick to action, and practical. To them, inaction in the face of adversity will always be the greatest injustice. Their ideological opposites are the Tushui Pandaren, fellow Wandering Islanders, who sided with the Alliance instead when the time came. Both groups represent the majority of pandaren within their respective factions.

History

Ji Firepaw, Master of the Huojin.

The Huojin philosophy and its followers originated from the teachings of Master Zurong on the Wandering Isle, and was well established by the time the mists of Pandaria fell. At the time, the group was already headed by the spirited Ji Firepaw and coexisted in relative harmony with an opposing philosophy in the form of the Tushui.

Shortly before the arrival of the Horde and Alliance, the Huojin were active in defending Wu-Song Village from an incursion of hozen.[3]

When the Skyseeker crashed on the Wandering Isle, it mortally wounded Shen-zin Su and threw the entire island's safety into jeopardy.[4] The pandaren of the Wandering Isle, led by the Tushui and Huojin, had to work together with the surviving Alliance gunship crew and Horde prisoners in order to save the giant turtle. Both philosophies eventually clashed during the crisis, with Ji Firepaw and the Huojin taking violent, drastic, and risky action in order to prevent disaster.[5] Though their actions came close to killing Shen-zin Su, the Huojin and their allies were successful in reversing the damage done and healing the island.[6]

After these events and the difficult choices involved, Ji and the Huojin decided to leave the Wandering Isle. They found themselves naturally attracted to the Horde's values of strength and conviction, as opposed to the Tushui interest in the Alliance. Ji would accept the invitation to join the Horde, and traveled to Orgrimmar with some companions to meet with Garrosh Hellscream in person.[7] After proving himself to the Warchief, Ji and the Huojin were officially inducted into the Horde.

Since that time, they have committed themselves to their new faction, such as representing the Horde in the conflict over the Temple of Kotmogu in the Vale of Eternal Blossoms. They would also later establish the Huojin Landing on the Timeless Isle from which Horde champions could explore the island. Ji Firepaw himself quickly became a major Horde leader, though this cost him dearly during the subsequent Siege of Orgrimmar when he was captured and tortured by the Kor'kron of the True Horde. Despite what happened in the Siege, Ji and his pandaren remained in the Horde.

Some time after the Argus Campaign, Ji Firepaw was not present for the Orgrimmar parade or the dinner as he was far away. His followers, however, participated in the feast and presented their rituals, an idea requested by Baine Bloodhoof.[8]

The Huojin would join the other factions of the Horde in fighting the Alliance as part of the Fourth War. Huojin monks subsequently took part in many missions alongside heroes of the Horde, directed at various targets across Azeroth.

During the Faction Assault on Nazmir, a force of Huojin led by Brewmaster Lin set up a command post in the north of the region and began helping to direct the local defense. Lin and his troops were ultimately targeted by the Alliance, who sought to destroy the Horde's command structure in the area.[9]

During the Faction Assault on Tiragarde Sound, a small group of Huojin Disciple was sent to support the invasion. As the Horde divided itself between Varok Saurfang and Sylvanas Windrunner, Ji Firepaw and his people joined Saurfang. During the battle at the Gates of Orgrimmar, the Alliance aligned with Saurfang's revolutionaries and subsequently allowed for Aysa Cloudsinger to unite the Tushui Pandaren with the Huojin. The united pandaren joined the tauren and Highmountain tauren in defending Thunder Bluff in case of a counterattack by Sylvanas and her forces. In time, they received word that Saurfang had challenged Sylvanas to mak'gora, which ended with his death and Sylvanas abandoning the Horde.[10][11]

During the Assault in the Vale of Eternal Blossoms, a group of Huojin Defender led by Ji Firepaw fought to protect the Shrine of Two Moons.

Following the death of N'Zoth, the leaders of the Horde gathered together within the Orgrimmar Embassy with Ji Firepaw representing the pandaren and subsequently joined the Horde Council, a conglomerate of leaders who would represent their people's interests, which was created to lead the Horde.[12]

Under the Lich King Bolvar Fordragon's command, the Four Horsemen acquired fallen champions of both the Horde and Alliance through the battlefields and graveyards of Azeroth,[13] including Huojin Pandaren. Thus, the Knights of the Ebon Blade welcomed a new generation of death knights in preparation for times ahead.[14] They were later sent by Highlord Darion Mograine to Orgrimmar, in order to join the Horde once more and help protect the world.[15]

Huojin philosophy

“We call those vicious monkeys swinging into town hozen. They keep to themselves normally, but they know something bad is coming, so they're here to steal our supplies.
In situations like these, the clear answer is the only answer. These monkeys will leave when we force them to leave! To not defend our town and those we love would be the only true crime. Thus is the way of the Huojin.”

The followers of Huojin firmly believe injustice must be met with a swift and decisive response, though this response should be flexible and calculated for the situation at hand; to the Huojin, the end will always ultimately justify the means.[2] Huojin is all about passion and taking direct action. The students of this school believe that as long as they're working for the greater good, they can be more flexible about how they get the job done. Li Li Stormstout described Huojin and Tushui as pretty popular in Pandaria.[18]

The Huojin philosophy is also exemplified by the following scroll that can be found at the Shang Xi Training Grounds:

Path of the Huojin

"Always challenge. Always question. In the pursuit of a greater good, inaction is the only wrong."
- Master Zurong

The Path of the Huojin is marked by practical and decisive action. Followers of this discipline believe that morals and ideals are not absolute but change with circumstances.

As such, a Huojin Master must remain flexible in his or her thinking, always evaluating the greater good.

In Vol'jin: Shadows of the Horde, Chen Stormstout reflected on his internal balance between Huojin and Tushui. He described his niece Li Li as a fine example of a pandaren accepting the philosophy of Huoji, since it was people of such an adventurous spirit who had departed on Shen-zin Su or adventured in Outland. While he think of himself as being firmly in the middle, more realistically, he tended toward Huojin when adventuring in the wider world.[19] Pondering the limits of both ways, Chen concluded that the end of Huojin, in the eyes of most pandaren, was when giving way to impulsiveness meant giving too little value to anyone and anything. A faceless enemy at a distance was easier to kill than someone a sword's length away. Huojin, carried to the extreme, made all life valueless, and was simply the harbinger of evil.[20] Both Tushui and Huojin balance each other.[21]
