The Cult of the Nethersworn (or just the Nethersworn) was a group of Burning Legion cultists led by Raest Magespear, a former Kirin Tor agent who turned to the forbidden art of necromancy.[2]
During the third invasion of the Burning Legion, the cult was known to meet in secret within the Underbelly, hidden amongst the people of Dalaran,[3] where they were looking for the final reagents for their mysterious ritual.[4] At the request of Raest's brother, Karam Magespear, adventurers were tasked to investigate the threat they represented and find the whereabouts of Raest.[5] In the Underbelly, they discovered that the Nethersworn were distributing their manifesto to recruit among the Underbelly Lowlifes, and were eventually ambushed by their assassins.[6]
When Archmage Karlain of the Council of Six attempted to decrypt the manifesto, they were attacked by Eriah Dawnsbane in the Violet Citadel, revealing that Raest had truly gone down a dark path.[7] The archmage eventually theorized that "the place its skin is thinnest" they spoke of might refered to the place where the veil between Azeroth and the Twisting Nether is weakest - the Tomb of Sargeras on the Broken Shore.[8] After bypassing a trap and defeating several cultists found in the Felbreach Hollow, Karam confronted his brother who summoned Thar'kith, before fleeing through a Nether Breach portal.[9]
Despite Raest's escape, Archmage Khadgar was at least satisfied that the Nethersworn cultists would no longer skulk in the streets of Dalaran, and tasked the Kirin Tor to figure out how they could reach the necromancer through the magical wards he left behind to block the way.[10] Their mages eventually opened a portal to Raest's location, who had found a way to use the energy of the Nether to enhance his necromantic magic. The adventurers eventually defeated Raest, who died alongside his brother, ending once and for all the threat of the Cult of the Nethersworn.[11]
