“Do you know of "alara'shinu," druid? It means finding beauty in imperfection. Those who live by this philosophy understand the transience of nature, accept the cycle of life and death, and derive joy from this truth. To understand nature is to understand the great cycle of all things. A blooming flower will someday return to the earth to fuel new seeds. The sun sets each day, to rise again and give new life. Our order is dedicated to understanding and preserving the continuation of this pattern.”
The Cenarion Circle (or simply the Circle)[3] is a harmonious order[4] that guides and keeps watch over the world's druids and their practices.[5] The organization mostly consists of members of the tauren, jungle troll, night elf, and worgen races, but also receives help from primal manifestations of Life such as the Wild Gods and the Children of Cenarius. The Cenarion Circle are the guardians of nature, the preservers of balance, and the protectors of all life;[6] striving to maintain the fragile balance within the world. Furthermore, their members act as keepers of ancient lore and pay particular attention to the traditional ways of the druids. The organization was blessed and named after the Lord of the Forest Cenarius, one of the most powerful and influential demigods of Azeroth.[7]
The Cenarion Circle operates outside of the kaldorei government's authority,[8] and is currently co-led by Cenarius, along with several Archdruids including Malfurion Stormrage, Hamuul Runetotem, and the leaders of various druid organizations. The Circle has many posts across Azeroth and even in Outland, but their main home is the town of Nighthaven in the Moonglade. Their other major presence was once the Cenarion Hold, from where they fought against the Qiraji Empire in Silithus. Years later, they used the Dreamgrove as their base in Val'sharah to repel the third invasion of the Burning Legion.
History
Foundation
The first mortal druid on Azeroth was Malfurion Stormrage, who was trained in the druidic arts by the forest demigod Cenarius. After the Great Sundering, further night elves chose to follow in Malfurion's footsteps, and he gladly taught them what he knew. They made this choice out of reverence for nature and a desire to learn. Impressed by Malfurion's knowledge and conduct, the green Dragon Aspect, Ysera, saw the worth and potential of races other than dragons and invited the druids to visit her realm, the Emerald Dream.[9]
The Cenarion Circle was eventually founded by Malfurion during a meeting in the Moonglade, with Cenarius's blessing, in order to fight the growing threat of the worgen during the War of the Satyr. Together, they established a set of guidelines and traditions so that another tragedy like Ralaar Fangfire and his Druids of the Scythe would not occur again, as the latters were slaves to their own rage, tearing through friend and foe alike amid a battle against the satyrs. The priestess Belysra Starbreeze, a friend of Ralaar, eventually interrupted the meeting and brought the Scythe of Elune to stop her old friend's madness. Meeting Alpha Prime and his followers in a field of peacebloom, Malfurion and his druids later mournfully used the scythe to seal the worgen away in the Emerald Dream, forcing them to enter a peaceful eternal slumber beneath the enchanted tree known as Daral'nir in the Dream.[10]
During the course of the Long Vigil, Malfurion and the Cenarion Circle busied themselves with upholding the balance of nature and healing lands still polluted with demonic corruption. Much of this they did in unison with Ysera and her green dragonflight, deep within the twisting pathways of the Emerald Dream. They thus slumbered for decades at a time, their dreamforms wandering Ysera's realm.[11] For thousands of years, the druids spent much of their time walking the wilds of Azeroth, meditating in the Emerald Dream, and trying to heal the damage that the Burning Legion had caused.[12]
Birth of the Nightmare
4,500 years before the First War, Archdruid Fandral Staghelm took branches from the World Tree Nordrassil and planted them over saronite that had begun to appear across the world, including a particularly large source of saronite in the Grizzly Hills. Five of these became the Great Trees, and he named the World Tree he planted in the Grizzly Hills Andrassil, or "Crown of the Snow". However, Malfurion Stormrage and the rest of the Cenarion Circle became furious upon learning that these branches had been planted without their approval. They did, however, agree that the plan seemed to have worked, and for several decades all seemed well. Yet in time, bloody battles erupted between wildlife[13] as well as the taunka and the forest nymphs of Northrend, two races not known for their warring ways. Word slowly reached the druids, and the Cenarion Circle launched an expedition to investigate the source of the violence. They later discovered that Andrassil's roots had reached so deep into the earth that they had touched Yogg-Saron's subterranean prison. The Old God had infused the tree with its foul energies, and thus all living creatures in the area were slowly being driven to madness. The Cenarion Circle knew that, without the blessing of the Aspects, Andrassil was vulnerable to corruption, and they were also aware that there was no way to spare the World Tree or ease its suffering. The druids decided that the only recourse was to destroy Andrassil, which was renamed Vordrassil or "Broken Crown."
Although killing Andrassil had been a heartbreaking task, the Cenarion Circle was pleased it had stopped the growth of saronite. Yet unbeknownst to the druids, something dark had taken root in the Emerald Dream. Yogg-Saron had used the trees planted by Fandral as a doorway into the Dream - a doorway through which the other Old Gods could grasp the ethereal domain and well. Small seeds of corruption were spread throughout Ysera's realm. In time, these seeds polluted the dreamways. This marked the beginning of what would become known as the Emerald Nightmare.[14]
War of the Shifting Sands
Around 975 years BDP, Archdruid Fandral initiated an ambitious quest to regrow the desolate land of Silithus. Along with a group of night eleven druids, his son Valstann came across a mysterious and ancient fortress deep in the desert's interior. Although some of the druids, sensing the darkness, advised against entering the dark halls, Valstann still entered, inadvertently roused the dormant qiraji back to life.[15] Horrified by their discovery, Valstann and the druids fled Ahn'Qiraj and established a small outpost in the desert to monitor the insectoids. Having sent for reinforcements, Valstann and his companions could do little else but watch the buildup within the complex.[16]
When the War of the Shifting Sands began, Fandral had successfully rallied a sizeable force of kaldorei, consisting of druids of the Cenarion Circle, Sentinels, priestesses of Elune, and keepers of the grove. He made haste to the south of the continent, where the night elf host clashed with their vicious foes. By the end of the conflict, the night elves and dragons gathered before Ahn'Qiraj, where Fandral called to his druids to focus their powers as one and, alongside Anachronos, they summoned a great barricade to close off Ahn'Qiraj. Outside the cursed city, the dry earth split wide, and a magical barrier of stone and colossal roots emerged. The impenetrable Scarab Wall towered high over the barren landscape, effectively sealing the qiraji within their city forever.[17]
After the war, the Cenarion Circle established Cenarion Hold to guard the imprisoned Old God C'Thun and its forces.[18]
Third War and aftermath

Upon being roused from their sleep, the Druids of the Talon and the Druids of the Claw participated in the defense against the Burning Legion's invasion of Kalimdor. Led by Malfurion Stormrage, they assisted the Sentinels and tried to find the Wild Gods but were unsuccessful.[19] They ultimately fought in the Battle of Mount Hyjal where they assisted Malfurion with his plan to sacrifice Nordrassil's ancient power in order to defeat the Legion.
During the course of the demonic invasion, Hamuul Runetotem befriended Malfurion who taught him many secrets of the wild and blessed him with the touch of nature. Since that time, Hamuul has become an honored member of the Cenarion Circle and is recognized as the first tauren druid in nearly twenty generations.[20]
In the aftermath of the mortals' victory, the night elves lost their immortality along with the world tree Nordrassil, and shortly after that, Malfurion entered a deep coma when Fandral Staghelm ambushed him in his barrow den.[21] No one knew why, and no one knew how to wake him. His absence left the leadership of the Cenarion Circle to Fandral, who acted as the primary contact between the druids and Tyrande Whisperwind during the period when Malfurion was absent.[22] Archdruid Fandral later met with the other druids from the Circle of the Ancients and Cenarion Circle and, without Malfurion to argue against him, convinced them of the wisdom of creating the new World Tree to restore their immortality. Through the druids' efforts, Teldrassil was planted off the coast of Darkshore in northern Kalimdor, where the bulk of night elven society took up residence atop its mighty boughs.
In truth, Fandral's fall to the spreading Emerald Nightmare was all but assured after Xavius sent the archdruid dreams detailing a way to restore his fallen son to life. Desperate to believe the satyr’s lies, Fandral silenced and misdirected many of the druids who might otherwise have noticed the growing presence of the Nightmare within the Dream.[13] In the end, the new World Tree did not even restore the kaldorei's immortality,[12] and unbeknownst to the Circle, he also planted the new World Tree grafted with a branch from Xavius's tree, all but ensuring the full infection of the Emerald Dream.[13]
When Tyrande discovered Malfurion's comatose body in his barrow den, she sent for the Cenarion Circle and Sisterhood of Elune. The druids informed her that Malfurion was last known to be meditating, and that there was no sign that intruders had violated the Moonglade. Upon further investigation, the Cenarion Circle repeatedly tried and failed to call his spirit back to his physical form. The druids also attempted to contact him in the Emerald Dream to no avail, and at last, they appealed to the Dragon Aspect Ysera, but even she could not find Malfurion. The organization eventually decided that it would be best to leave Malfurion's body where it was found, as the general consensus was that his spirit had the best chance of locating his body if the body is not moved. In time, the druids and several priestesses of Elune were tending to archdruid's body, and his mysterious ailment had been kept a secret, except for the highest-ranking members of the Sisters of Elune and of the Cenarion Circle.[12]

As the leader of the Cenarion Circle, Archdruid Fandral Staghelm soon proved an even more contentious and abrasive leader than would have been apparent from his past behavior. He clashed regularly with Tyrande Whisperwind, the chief priestess of Elune and leader of the Sentinels, the de facto military of the night elves.[23] However, their disagreements were not a matter of public knowledge, as only the highest-ranking priestesses of Elune and druids knew of the friction that had sprung up between their leaders.[1]
Due to the Third War's heavy casualties, the Cenarion Circle set aside its historical strictures on membership. Thus, most druids today remain night elf men, but the druids have also welcomed women into their ranks. In addition, other races--most notably the tauren--have been permitted to join the Cenarion Circle.[9] Against Archdruid Staghelm's wishes, it was in fact Remulos who welcomed the tauren into the organization and taught them many closely guarded secrets, as such, tensions between the two remained.[24]
The Cenarion Circle in Darnassus was looking for seasoned adventurers to lend them aid in a vital research project about morrowgrain. Archdruid Staghelm was spearheading this research,[25] and similarly, the same research was also spearheaded in Thunder Bluff by Archdruid Hamuul Runetotem.[26] In time, Quintis Jonespyre in Feathermoon Stronghold was concerned with why Fandral was using the name of the Cenarion Circle, as well as the Circle's resources, to procure vast amounts of morrowgrain.[27]
As it is the way of the divine to help those in need, the Church of the Holy Light sent their priests to help the Cenarion Circle against the demonic corruption in Felwood.[28]
When the emergent Emerald Nightmare began to affect the physical world, the druids were the first to recognize the growing threat, even if its origins were unclear. In time, Fandral reluctantly allowed the members of the Cenarion Circle, even the ones who were not elves, to join the fight against the Nightmare. The organization's investigations took them across the world, among them, the Wailing Caverns in the Barrens became one of the first points of conflict after the Disciples of Naralex were trapped in the caverns' corrupted depths. The Horde adventurers eventually mounted a rescue mission, cleansing the caves of the Nightmare and saving several of the druids. Meanwhile, a green dragon named Lord Itharius called for help from the Cenarion Circle, which sent an Alliance force to cleanse the Temple of Atal'Hakkar in the Swamp of Sorrows. These champions slaughtered many Atal'ai adherents and put an end to their rituals to summon Hakkar the Soulflayer. However, the Dragons of Nightmare soon emerged from the Emerald Dream across Azeroth. Driven mad, they murdered innocents by the hundreds, indiscriminately targeting whatever living creatures were nearby. The Cenarion Circle's members were mournful but resolute. In the end, very few of the green dragons could be saved, and many were killed as there was no other way to stop their rampages.[29]
The disturbance in Ahn'Qiraj was noticed immediately, as the Cenarion Circle's outposts across the desert fell under attack from swarms of silithid and qiraji. The druids soon requested support from both the Horde and the Alliance who agreed to send their armies to Silithus. Warchief Thrall and Regent Lord Bolvar Fordragon quickly came to an unprecedented agreement. Under the command of the orc Varok Saurfang,[30] both factions temporarily combined their forces as the Might of Kalimdor to strike back against the threat of the Old God C'Thun, using Cenarion Hold as their headquarters.[31]
Ever since the War of the Shifting Sands, the druids of the Circle have kept a close watch on the wastes from their base at Cenarion Hold at the center of northern Silithus. There, they have been waiting for the time when a hero would step forward to unleash the might of all the mortal races against the sinister qiraji and their innumerable legions of silithid minions. But the druids have not been idle during their long watch; they crafted formidable weapons, armors, and enchanted ornaments to assist all those who will brave the terrors of Ahn'Qiraj. The adventurers who have proven their worth in battle against the qiraji forces beyond the Scarab Wall were granted access to the ancient order's arsenal.[32] At some point, several champions of the Circle fell to the silithid at Hive'Regal.[33][34] Through blade, shield, and magic, the Old God was eventually defeated by the mortals of Azeroth.[35]
The Burning Crusade
By the time of invasion of Outland, the Emerald Dream was under assault from outside forces led by an ancient arakkoa spirit called Anzu. Within the Dream, the adventurers were tasked to wake up and protect Clintar Dreamwalker who was sleeping in the Stormrage Barrow Dens in Moonglade. Phantasmal Lashers were also seeping out from the Dream and had to be suppressed by Cenarion Dreamwardens.[36]
Over the years, many druids of the Circle joined or created various subgroups. After the reopening of the Dark Portal, the Circle sent an expeditionary force called the Cenarion Expedition to explore the uncharted world of Outland. Although it began as a small venture controlled directly by the Cenarion Circle, the Expedition eventually grew into a large and fairly autonomous group,[37] although it still relied on its parent organization's support.[38] After learning of the naga's plans to drain the waters of Zangarmarsh, the Expedition asked for aid from the Circle. Although affairs in Moonglade and Silithus had kept the Circle members occupied, the Circle promised to send the necessary resources to the Expedition's forces.[39]
At some point, the expedition requested help from the Omenai at the Temple of Telhamat, in order to study what happened in the region and help reverse any damage possible. Amaan the Wise accepted and sent the adventurers in support.[40]
Wrath of the Lich King
At some point, a Cenarion Scout was captured by the Scourge and held within Acherus: The Ebon Hold. Lady Alistra, one of Acherus' death knight trainers, used the unfortunate druid as an example of how the path of the unholy death knight could be used to combat those with powerful healing spells.
During the war against the Lich King, the Druids for the Ethical and Humane Treatment of Animals—a radical splinter group of the Cenarion Expedition— waged war on the famed hunter Hemet Nesingwary to stop his decimation of wildlife in Northrend.[41]
Rayne could be found helping the Argent Crusade at the Argent Stand in Zul'drak, while Fhyron Shadesong acted as the Circle representative at the Argent Tournament Grounds in Icecrown.
War Against the Nightmare
Some time after the war in Northrend, Teldrassil became increasingly ill. Many druids were thus called upon by their leader, Archdruid Fandral Staghelm, and were to lend their power to help heal the decaying World Tree and use the Idol of Remulos' power to make their efforts more potent.[42] In time, Xavius the Lord of the Emerald Nightmare launched his attack on Azeroth.[43] People could not wake up and were lost in nightmares, without any way to let them out, while a strange mist spread through the lands with shadowy figures attacking people.[44] It was then revealed that Malfurion Stormrage was being kept in the Emerald Dream by Fandral, who used the Morrowgrain collected by adventurers to slowly kill his Shan'do's physical body.[45]
When Malfurion eventually escaped, he flew to Teldrassil where he found druids of the Cenarion Circle trying to heal the tree. However, they were inadvertently corrupting it even further under the orders of the traitorous Fandral.[46] After the latter was defeated at the Cenarion Enclave, Malfurion led all druids in healing Teldrassil from Xavius' corruption; thus allowing Alexstrasza to bless the World Tree. On the waking world, and with the help of several druids of the Circle, Malfurion was eventually able to destroy the Nightmare Lord's power source, both on Azeroth and in the Dream. With him gone, the nature and dreamform armies were able to rout and defeat the Nightmare, though a small pocket of it remained unconquered.[47]
The Shattering
Following the defeat of the Lich King, the night elves broke off all trade ties with the Horde due to the events of the Battle of the Wrath Gate. While Warchief Garrosh Hellscream advocated aggression as a way to obtain necessary resources for Orgrimmar and Durotar, Archdruid Hamuul Runetotem suggested he use his personal friendships with the kaldorei to find a more peaceable way to resolve their differences, arguing that even the night elves would likely take no pleasure in the suffering of Horde children, which Thrall and Cairne Bloodhoof both fully supported.[48]
However, Hamuul was unable to convene the druidic meeting in Moonglade due to a wary Remulos, who apparently insisted that they meet initially in Ashenvale due to the potentially explosive nature of their political affairs. The Keeper was nonetheless willing to allow a second meeting in the Moonglade should their Ashenvale meeting prove successful.[49] Despite initial reluctance and tension, Hamuul and his old friend Elerethe Renferal met with their druids in Ashenvale. However, they were all ambushed and slain (with the sole exception of Hamuul) by the Twilight's Hammer disguised as Horde members, destroying their attempted peace process, and further worsening Alliance-Horde relations.[50]
Cataclysm

This section is a lore stub. |
“The forces we are up against here go beyond the Twilight's Hammer, Ragnaros or even Deathwing. We must succeed here if our world is going to survive at all.”
At some point prior to the Cataclysm, members of the Cenarion Circle partnered with the Argent Crusade to help heal the Plaguelands.[51]
Following the invasion of Gilneas, the harvest-witches who contracted the worgen curse in Gilneas found that their druidic powers were somewhat amplified. After making first contact with the night elves, they were offered induction into the Cenarion Circle for study and training.[52]
Though Archdruid Malfurion Stormrage had become the co-ruler of the night elves, the Cenarion Circle remained a neutral organization, intent on restoring balance following the Cataclysm. In Desolace and the Southern Barrens, members of the organization investigated the new out-of-control vegetation.[53][54] A group of druids investigated the fauna in Un'Goro Crater.[55] In Felwood, a large portion of corrupted soil was cleansed to build Whisperwind Grove, and though most of the Circle turned a blind eye to the goblin wood-cutting going on in the region, the worgen of Talonbranch Glade refused, and broke away from the neutral organization to fight them.[56]
When the forces of Ragnaros the Firelord attacked Mount Hyjal, the mountain was defended by an alliance between the Cenarion Circle and the green dragonflight known as the Guardians of Hyjal.[57] As the sworn guardians of nature, they stood as the first line of defense against the fire elementals and were soon joined by the night elf military and champions from the Horde and the Alliance. This unified front established defenses across the mountain, but even these were not enough to hold back the storm of smoke and embers. The Cenarion Circle soon led efforts to rally the legendary Wild Gods for battle. Most of these immense beasts had either died during the War of the Ancients or gone into hiding following that conflict. Slowly and with great care, the druids and their allies drew the majestic creatures to Hyjal. They even found Cenarius's spirit in the Emerald Dream and brought him back to the physical world. The forests soon trembled with the footfalls of legends like Goldrinn, the Great Wolf, and Tortolla, the wise and unyielding turtle. Unified in purpose, Hyjal's guardians were unstoppable, and with blade and spell, talon and fang, they destroyed the Twilight's Hammer's presence in the region and pushed back the fire elementals. Even Ragnaros fled before the fury of the Wild Gods and their mortal allies, vanishing into the rift between Azeroth and the Firelands.[58]
At some point, Cenarion Observer Shayana traveled to Surwich in the Blasted Lands where she discovered the corruption of the Tainted Forest, and that the demons of the Tainted Scar were rallying around the great tree Maldraz. Sharing the same fears as Charlton Connisport, she agreed to help Alliance adventurers to stop Marl Wormthorn and his actions from endangering the lives of others.[59] In order to halt the corruption, Shayana created a Demoniac Vessel to break Wormthorn's trance,[60] while Mayor Charlton tasked the adventurers to reduce the number of demons[61] and kill the corrupted druid.[62]
Rage of the Firelands
While Azeroth's defenders fought to hold back Ragnaros and his forces, Deathwing called on a new weapon to end Thrall and his allies: the Druids of the Flame. They were led by Fandral Staghelm, the disgraced former leader of the Cenarion Circle, who had been locked in a barrow den for his attempted murder of Malfurion and his dealings with the Emerald Nightmare. Agents of the Twilight's Hammer soon helped him escape his bonds, and since Fandral knew that resurrecting his son Valstann was impossible, his only desire was now to bring ruin to Azeroth. After he was remade in flames by Ragnaros, Fandral became the Firelord's foremost lieutenant and the first Druid of the Flame.[63] He then recruited others to his side, mainly druids who were disillusioned with the Cenarion Circle.[64]
After Hamuul Runetotem was attacked by a powerful Druid of the Flame named Leyara,[65][66] the Cenarion Circle quickly transported him to treat his injuries at the Sanctuary of Malorne.[67][68][69]
Meanwhile, Malfurion rallied Hyjal's defenders in a massive counterattack against the fire elementals. Another group called the Avengers of Hyjal was formed, which drove Ragnaros' army back into the Firelands. During the course of the Firelands Invasion, the druids sought to build a permanent outpost in the Firelands, as they couldn't allow what happened in the Burning Steppes and Mount Hyjal to threaten Azeroth again. They grew the Sentinel Tree as a protective canopy, where under its shelter, the Circle would permanently station a group of druids to maintain an eternal vigil over the desolate world.[70] In time, with reinforcements from the Horde and the Alliance, the Cenarion Circle stormed into the stronghold known as the Molten Front. Slowly, they pushed deeper until they reached Sulfuron Keep, where Ragnaros fell before the onslaught of Azeroth's defenders. His greatest lieutenants, including Fandral and most of the Druids of the Flame, suffered the same fate.[64]
Some time after Ragnaros' fall, the Circle united with the Earthen Ring and the Dragon Aspects to heal Nordrassil.[71] This union was unprecedented and accomplished all they had hoped, as the world had finally a chance of healing from the Cataclysm.[72] When Thrall's spirit was imprisoned underground by Deathwing, the Aspects called on the shaman and the Circle druids to break their corrupted brother's hold, bringing Thrall back to himself.[73]
During a meeting of the Wyrmrest Accord, Merithra noted that the Emerald Nightmare was stirring within the Rift of Aln and seemed to be seeking a new Nightmare Lord to replace Xavius. However, the Dragon Aspect Ysera replied that it was now the duty of the druids to watch over the Emerald Dream as she had become mortal following the Hour of Twilight.[74]
Traveler
The tauren druid Galena Stormspear, accompanied by the blue drake Telagos, reported the events of the battle at the Hidden citadel in Outland to the Cenarion Circle in the Moonglade. The druids were impressed that Galena had convinced Telagos to meet with them. The drake then spent several days studying the druids, and the Circle members did the same.[75]
Mists of Pandaria
At the time of the campaign in Pandaria, the Alliance managed to recover an ancient, powerful, and dangerous mogu artifact known as the Divine Bell from the continent. The Bell was subsequently taken to Darnassus for safekeeping and was kept underground beneath the Cenarion Enclave. With the aid of Aethas Sunreaver, the Horde mounted an infiltration of the city, and successfully stole the Bell from its vault.[76] The repercussions would eventually culminate in the infamous Purge of Dalaran.
Warlords of Draenor
During the war in Draenor, the druid Zen'Kiki could be found in Lunarfall Inn and Frostwall Tavern, where he was sent by the Cenarion Circle as an investigator of the Primals. He later tasked the Alliance and Horde commanders to collect a Strangely-Glowing Frond from the genesaur Yalnu in the Everbloom. Upon learning that the Primals wished to consume the planet, he showed concern and announced that he would report this information to the Circle on Azeroth.[77][78]
Legion

During the third invasion of the Burning Legion, the Cenarion Circle moved the bulk of its forces to the Dreamgrove in Val'sharah, the ancient forest where Malfurion Stormrage first learned druidism under the tutelage of Cenarius. In order to repel the forces Burning Legion across the Broken Isles, but most predominately Xavius and his Emerald Nightmare, various druid organizations united under the command of the Archdruid of the Dreamgrove with the help of Archdruid Rensar Greathoof from the Dreamweavers. In time, the druids obtained the legendary artifacts known as the Fangs of Ashamane, the Claws of Ursoc, and G'Hanir, the Mother Tree, and later gained access to the Emerald Dreamway, through which they could traverse Azeroth via portals.
When the Idol of the Wild was stolen by satyrs, Broll Bearmantle, Sylendra Gladesong, and the druid hero recovered it in order to commune with the Ancient Guardian Malorne at Nordrassil.[79] Beneath the roots of the World Tree, the senior of the Circle gathered and called upon the white stag who sensed the corruption of Shaladrassil. However, as Malorne ventured into the Emerald Dream to destroy the Nightmare's source, he was trapped when he reached the Rift of Aln.[80] In time, the druids found that the demigod was trapped in a recreation of his darkest nightmare: his death at the hands of Archimonde in the War of the Ancients.[81] After being freed, Malorne granted the Dreamgrove's Archdruid his blessing and the duty of using his power to serve and protect the wilds.[82]
At some point, the Idol of Aviana was stolen by the nathrezim Infazzar the Shade.[83] In addition to cutting the druids off from their flight form, Infazzar corrupted the idol as part of a plot to assault Dalaran with fel harpies. Infazzar was later slain by Thisalee Crow and the Archdruid of the Dreamgrove, and the corrupted idol was brought to the Dreamgrove, where the assembled druids purified it.[84]
The D.E.H.T.A. could be found in Highmountain where they opposed the Pinerock Hunters that threatened the wildlife in the area.[85]
During the Battle for the Exodar, Naralex and Zen'tabra helped the druid hero in repelling High General Rakeesh and the Legion forces out of the draenei capital.[86]
The Cenarion Circle later joined the other class orders in Dalaran, represented by Rensar Greathoof during the meeting,[87] in order to form the Armies of Legionfall. The druids then helped to repel the legion's assault on Dalaran and fought alongside their allies from Deliverance Point during the Assault on Broken Shore.
During the Argus Campaign, the Circle's troops were present on Argus to fight the Legion and protect the Vindicaar at Darkfall Ridge. When Sargeras impaled Azeroth with his sword, gravely injuring its world-soul, a druid champion among other champions of Azeroth drained the sword of its corruption with a sacred artifact of the Cenarion Circle, using it as a vessel for its vast power.[88]
The Cenarion Circle suffered heavy losses in Silithus with the destruction of Cenarion Hold when the Dark Titan tried to destroy the planet. Archdruid Malfurion reported that everyone in the hold was killed instantly and sent more members of the Circle there and, with the Sisters of Elune, the druids planned to build moonwells in an attempt to heal and stabilize Azeroth's wound.[89] Archdruid Hamuul Runetotem voiced his hopes of building a new Hold in the region as well as renewing cooperation with the Alliance through the Circle, but Warchief Sylvanas Windrunner was much less receptive to his suggestions.[90] Some in Orgrimmar are even wondering whether Cenarion Hold is needed now that C'Thun and his aqir are defeated.[18]
In the Deaths of Chromie, documents bearing orders from Remulos were given to the druidess Adrine Towhide in Andorhal. With her help, a distraction was made during the Battle for Andorhal, in order to help Chronormu fly away safely.
Fourth War and aftermath
At the beginning of the Fourth War, the Cenarion Circle sent several druids to Silithus, including Broll Bearmantle and Hamuul Runetotem, and joined the Earthen Ring and the Champions of Azeroth under Magni Bronzebeard to help heal the wound left by Sargeras, but initially their efforts seemed to be having little effect.[91]
While Malfurion Stormrage and other druids actively participated in the war, the Cenarion Circle and its sub-groups seemed to have largely remained neutral, with Tholo Whitehoof remaining on Nordrassil and fighting alongside Anren Shadowseeker.[92]
After the armistice, the Cenarion Circle vowed to repair the damage done to Staghelm Point, and they planted the Sentinel Tree in memoriam of the defenders lost here, including Ralo'shan.[18]
In time, Tyrande Whisperwind, Malfurion, the Sentinels, and their people returned to Mount Hyjal,[93] making it their new temporary home in the wake of Teldrassil's destruction. The tauren druid Tiala Whitemane was mentioned as still guarding the World Tree, and with her assistance, Earthen Ring member Yukha was able to temporarily negotiate safe passage to Nordrassil for the Horde Council leaders, leading to a tense meeting between them and the night elves.[94]
Just like the Earthen Ring, the druids in Moonglade also noted disturbances in the spirit world.[95]
Shadowlands
The Cenarion Circle made its appearance in the druid section of the Training Hall in Stormwind and the Barracks in Orgrimmar, with Amaria Wildthorn, Mithlos Falconbriar, and Telotha Pinegrove as druid trainers.

A few years later, several druids of the Cenarion Circle traveled to Shady Sanctuary in the Ohn'ahran Plains on the Dragon Isles, including Hamuul Runetotem, Zen'tabra, and Celestine of the Harvest. After the Primalists claimed the portal to the Emerald Dream on the Ancient Bough, they aided the green dragonflight in reclaiming it.[96]
The Cenrrrn Cirrgl is the Azmerloth version of the Cenarion Circle. Several members of the Cenrrrn Cirrgl were thrown into the Time Rifts and appeared at Tyrhold Reservoir in Thaldraszus.
When the Druids of the Flame returned, the Cenarion Circle repelled them during the Dreamsurges, while Archdruid Hamuul directed adventurers across the Isles to investigate why the Dream was bleeding over into the Dragon Isles, unaware that it was a result of the growth of the World Tree Amirdrassil. Along with the Alliance and Horde forces, the Cenarion Circle came to Alexstrasza and the dragonflights' aid when they were attacked by Fyrakk the Blazing and his forces in the Dream.[97][98] Some of their druids could be seen working on closing a Flame Portal at the Furnace Coil.[99] In the aftermath of the conflict, the druids participated in the gathering in Amirdrassil when it bloomed on the Dragon Isles.[100]
In recognition of the Horde's aid in ensuring that Amirdrassil successfully bloomed unto Azeroth, Tyrande Whisperwind allowed Hamuul Runetotem, Bashana Runetotem, and Horde champions entry in Bel'ameth.[101]
Organization
The Cenarion Circle refer to themselves as a brotherhood.[102]
Although they are highly respected by most mortal societies, druids have nothing to do with creating or enforcing law. The Cenarion Circle has more far-reaching concerns than the politics of any particular government,[9] and being unaffiliated, it answers to no one save itself.[103]
Archdruid is the highest rank a druid can hold,[104] awarded only by the Cenarion Circle.[105] There are only a few archdruids on Azeroth,[103][106] most of which directly studied under Cenarius himself.[107]
Until the end of the Third War, all druids in the Cenarion Circle were men, and almost all were night elves. Women druids and druids from other races are not necessarily a recent development, but until the war, such druids were relatively rare and often had no affiliation with the organization. Due to the war's heavy casualties, though, the Cenarion Circle has set aside its historical strictures on membership. Thus, most druids today remain night elf men, but the druids have also welcomed women into their ranks. In addition, other races--most notably the tauren--have been permitted to join the Cenarion Circle. Even druids who might otherwise be at war with one another will set aside their disputes in order to work together for the betterment of nature.[9]
Despite the druids' caution toward outsiders, they may permit certain individuals who lack druidic ability to join them. Such applicants must prove themselves to the Cenarion Circle, however, and a druid's trust is not easily gained.[9]

Culture

The symbol of the Cenarion Circle is described as a great leaf from which majestic antlers sprouted,[47] which represent the antlers of Cenarius.[42]
All druids are welcomed to the sacred lands of Moonglade that offer knowledge and solace.[108] The Shrine of Remulos is a sacred place for the Cenarion Circle.[109] Every year, the druids of Moonglade invite all denizens of Azeroth to partake in their celebration of the great triumph over an ancient evil.[110]
During the Ahn'Qiraj War, the Cenarion Circle used combat, logistic, and tactical badges, but also the marks of Cenarius, in order for the heroes to prove their loyalty to their organization, as it was in their best interest to keep their most loyal allies well geared in exchange for those badges.[111]
The Cenarion Beacon is a device that can help identify corrupted elements of nature, such as the corrupted soul shards on tainted beasts that were put down for the greater good,[112] and the tainted vitriol that corrupts a vein of raw metal.[113] It also allows a seasoned herbalist to spot insidious fel creep,[114] and can be used by a well-trained skinner to spot patches of tainted skin from their bounty.[115] In order to purify the corruption, the Cenarion Circle use their own druidic plant salve.
The druids in Darnassus used the water of the moonwells of Teldrassil, and their moonwell had to be replenished from time to time.[116]
The druids of the Emerald Circle manipulated the fel energy within the [Impeccable Fel Essence] stone to enhance their attunement with the wild.
Teachings and powers
The druids of the Circle devote themselves to protecting the wilds and natural balance of Azeroth. The Circle embraces druids regardless of the places they come from, similar to the Earthen Ring. In their eyes, all are connected to the Great Cycle.[18] In the Emerald Dream, druids gain insight and oneness with the Great Cycle.[117]
Cenarion druids rely on the wisdom and power of the Great Bear Spirit to fuel their purpose.[118]
Animals and plants are the Circle's friends as well as charges. The druids choose to devote their lives as preservers of balance for their sakes as well as their own.[119] They consider the dryads as sacred.[120] The Mosshoof Coursers of Azshara are also sacred to the Cenarion Circle, and killing them for any reason, no matter how necessary, weakens their spirit.[121]
Having shared a long and prosperous partnership with them, the druids regard hippogryphs as valued allies in their ongoing quest to restore order and balance to the natural world. When conflict is unavoidable, the Cenarion War Hippogryph is called into service. Not yet the fearsome creatures they grow to in adulthood, their hatchlings have an almost harmless appearance that has caught novice trainers of the Cenarion Circle off guard.[122]
Cenarion druids have power over poison since Cenarius blessed them with the ability to purge even the most foul of poisons with a mere incantation.[123] Druids are able to enchant and carve branches with glyphs into the bark. With one such branch, the druids in Darnassus and Thunder Bluff obtained valuable information on the extent of the Scourge's plague in the Plaguelands.[124] Their druids can also peer into crystals of the Dream and unlock their mysteries.[125]
According to Aurel Goldleaf, the Cenarion Circle has delved into many of earth's secrets and craftsmen would do well to heed the words of the druids.
Training
The Cenarion Circle provides young druids with guidance, preventing any further misuse of druidic powers,[7] like the Druids of the Scythe did with the Pack form during the War of the Satyr.
Before entering the Emerald Dream, young students must make preparations. Mentors teach how to interpret not only what the spirits communicate to the druids, but also the complexities and secrets of the Emerald Dream. As they learn and grow in power, they will learn more of the sleeping trance.[126] Druids of the Circle in the past were put through pre-planned trials.[123] Young druids undergo first lessons into the role as a protector of balance.[118] One of the first steps is to learn of the ways of the bear, and to learn the strength of body and heart.[119] The wise and noble Great Bear Spirit serves as a tutor and mentor into the first true natural understanding of the nature of the bear for all druids.[127]
As the students grow in power and develop themselves as valued protectors of nature, they learn about the other animal aspects that Cenarius has blessed them with the ability to change into, including the aquatic form that affords the command and mastery of the water. To earn it, one must overcome two trials overseen by Dendrite Starblaze and Tajarri:
- The Trial of the Lake tests the ability to work in water under pressure.
- The Trial of the Sea Lion tests the resolve to understand the aspects of the form itself.[128]
In the first trial, the aspiring druid searches the depths of Lake Elune'ara to locate a Shrine Bauble that decays, and they need to quickly proceed with it to the Shrine of Remulos. It may turn into a competition with other druids, and mental and physical dexterity are critical to success. The shrine serves as a lasting tribute to the preservation of nature and balance. By using the bauble here, it serves as a nod to the importance of this place within the Circle.[129]
The second trial consists of creating the Pendant of the Sea Lion from two halves. One half draws power from the agility of the sea lion aspect, gliding through water; the other draws power from the incredible endurance of the sea lion aspect. Druids draw on both these traits equally to embody the aspect of their aquatic form. Each task in acquiring the pendant shows that both agility and endurance are necessary to act in harmony with what you desire to do underwater. Neither can exist without the other, and both cannot be done without your willingness to embrace the aspect of the sea lion. The student needs to remember these lessons well, and count on them after gaining the aquatic form.[130] After completing the trial, the students deliver the pendant to their trainers who then teach the aquatic form.[131]
The Trial of The Owls is a trial signifying a pivotal moment in the druidic training, where the young druid has to travel to several owl statues spread across the world and bring back their sigils. Requiring them to demonstrate an attunement with all aspects of their druidic calling.[132]

Reputation
The Cenarion Circle in World of Warcraft is a neutral faction, based in Moonglade and Silithus. Players start at 0/3000 Neutral, except for druids, who start at 2000/3000 neutral and will be Friendly after completing the early class quests at level 16.
Before The Burning Crusade expansion, the usual way of gaining reputation was to run Ruins of Ahn'Qiraj raids regularly to get access to reputation rewards and recipes. Since the expansion, however, Silithus and Ahn'Qiraj get much fewer visitors, since Outland gear is generally better and requires less effort.
However, many people still like the old regions and instances. With Patch 2.3, the reputation gains for the Cenarion Circle have been greatly increased, to make it easier for new players who usually will not spend that much time in the old content.
There are various methods of gaining reputation: killing mobs belonging to the Twilight Hammer in Silithus, doing repeatable quests (both solo and group quests), non-repeatable quests and, of course, AQ10.
Also, with the release of 1.12, you can now gain Cenarion Circle reputation by participating in the World PvP in Silithus. Turning in one Silithyst Dust gives you 20 reputation points for Cenarion Circle.
With patch 3.0.2 and the Achievement system, the [Guardian of Cenarius] title requires players to reach Exalted with both the Cenarion Circle and the Cenarion Expedition.
The release of patch 4.0.x saw the removal of the repeatable quests involving the Twilight Cultist clothing sets and summoning Abyssal mobs. The Cultist sets still drop, but serve no purpose other than vendor trash, as they are not disenchantable. To replace the potential reputation loss, the patch saw the introduction of Cenarion Circle faction quests in Desolace, Western Plaguelands and other zones.
Neutral | Friendly | Honored | Revered | Exalted | Rep | Notes | |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Repeatable quests | |||||||
500 | [Encrypted Twilight Text] x10 | ||||||
Instances | Trash: 10 Bosses: 300-600 |
90 Reputation per NPC for keeping the Lieutenant General and each of his elites alive during the Rajaxx fight 300 Reputation for Buru the Gorger, Moam, Kurinnaxx, General Rajaxx and Ayamiss the Hunter 600 Reputation for Ossirian the Unscarred | |||||
Trash: 10 Bosses: 150-500 |
Only a few of the mobs give Cenarion Circle rep, most only Brood. 500 Reputation points for turning in a [Qiraji Lord's Insignia], obtained by killing any boss in the Temple of Ahn'Qiraj. (These also give 500 Reputation with the Brood of Nozdormu. In order to maximize Brood rep, these insignias should be saved until you are 2999/3000 Neutral with the Brood.) 500 Reputation points for killing C'Thun. | ||||||
Mobs | 10 | ||||||
30 |
The fastest way to grind reputation at level 90 is to grind through all the Twilight Hammer cultists in Silithus. Each one gives 10 reputation and drop Encrypted Twilight Texts, which are required for the repeatable quest [15-30] Encrypted Twilight Texts. It is possible to grind all the way through Honored to Exalted in less than four hours doing this.
NOTE: Twilight Prophets drop 7 - 10 Encrypted Twilight Texts.
Rewards
Quests
- The Ruins of Ahn'Qiraj
Several quests were available outside the Ruins of Ahn'Qiraj instance portal for class-specific armor sets. The sets consisted of a ring, a cloak, and a weapon. The ring required Honored reputation with the Cenarion Circle, the cloak requires Revered and the weapon requires Exalted. See the Ruins of Ahn'Qiraj Quest Loot page for more info. There are no quests available to any class added after Burning Crusade.
- Field Duty
The Field Duty quest chain gave substantial rewards (including epics at the end) from a series of quests introduced in Patch 1.9. These quests were not available until the Gates of Ahn'Qiraj opened and the 10-hour Opening Event had been completed. These quests were removed with the release of Cataclysm.
- Lunar Festival
During the Lunar Festival there are additional quests to gain reputation.
[1-80] Lunar Fireworks - 150 reputation
[1-80R] Elune's Blessing - 500 reputation
- Non-repeatable quests
[15-30] Cenarion Tenacity - 20 reputation
[15-30] Amidst Death, Life - 500 reputation

In the RPG
Its members are dedicated to protecting nature and restoring the damage done to it by malevolent forces.[134]
Most of this faction's members are either night elves or tauren. The Cenarion Circle, however, accepts men and women of any race; druids are members by definition, but other characters must prove themselves to the Cenarion Circle before becoming accepted. Fervently dedicated to protecting the wilderness, the operatives of the Cenarion Circle consider their duties above the petty wars and futile disputes of the Alliance, the Horde, and any other faction, race, family, or group. They are, after all, trying to save the world from those who would unwittingly destroy it; they allow no distractions.[134]
Notes and trivia
- While tauren myths claim otherwise, the Cenarion Circle declared that Malfurion Stormrage was the first druid.[135]
- The Cenarion Raiment is a set of armor crafted by druids of Cenarion Circle.[136]
- According to Muradin Bronzebeard, only the Cenarion Circle could have made such armor as the Dreamwalker Raiment, which calls on the healing power of the dream itself.[137]
- Prior to his corruption by the Emerald Nightmare, Jarlaxla's skill at harnessing animal forms earned him renown among the druids of the Cenarion Circle.[138]
- In Feralas, a Cenarion Circle acolyte took the tauren Galena Stormspear as an apprentice.[139]
- The Bloodpetal lashers in Un'Goro Crater are under the observation from the Circle.[140]
- The neutrality of the Cenarion Circle and its members appears to be a somewhat sensitive topic.
- When he was still technically part of the Alliance, Archdruid Fandral Staghelm was reluctant to admit the tauren into the Circle.[1]
- Several night elven druids, including Archdruid Elerethe Renferal, nearly broke off their relations with their tauren Circle members after it was alleged that the Horde attacked Sentinels without provocation shortly before the Cataclysm, though the Circle was a means through which they attempted unsuccessfully to restore trade ties between the two factions.[50]
- Not long afterwards, the worgen of Talonbranch Glade apparently broke away from the Circle's ranks because they were disillusioned by the Circle's passivity in the wake of goblin activity in Felwood.[141]
- While many ancients and forest spirits apparently resented the Horde for invading neighboring Ashenvale, they nevertheless cooperated with Horde adventurers against the Twilight's Hammer and Deathwing's forces at Mount Hyjal out of necessity, as the combined Alliance and Cenarion Circle forces were not enough to stop them.[142]
- At the same time, High Chieftain Cliffwalker refused to support the Overlord Krom'gar's aggression against Thal'darah Grove,[143] arguing that the young kaldorei druids there had studied with his brethren for generations,[144] and were not harboring a secret Alliance weapon as he believed; this decision to oppose Krom'gar resulted in the deaths of his wife and son, and the destruction of Cliffwalker Post.[145]
- Shortly before the Attack on Theramore Isle, the night elf druid Lintharel risked her life saving her tauren friend Nita from her human commander (having stated earlier that the divisions between Alliance and Horde were false ones), even defying him openly despite his direct orders.[146]
- Some night elf druids such as Thisalee Crow and Malfurion himself have openly joined the faction war and helped their kaldorei kin in times of great need, such as in the Battle for Darkshore. Some Horde druids have done likewise, albeit uneasily, and at least originally, Sylvanas urged them to fight the ancients at Darkshore, arguing they were being turned against the purpose, or else their people would be destroyed.[147] It is further uncertain how the relationships of the Circle members, including Malfurion and the tauren druids, were impacted by the events of the Burning of Teldrassil and the Fourth War, and whether any of the allied races have since joined the ranks of the Circle.
- One of the realms in World of Warcraft is named after the Cenarion Circle, Server:Cenarion Circle.

Due to their soldiers looking identical to Cenarion Hold Infantry and Reservists, Season of Discovery's Emerald Wardens are most certainly an offshoot of the Cenarion Circle.
