Clefthooves[1] (pl. also clefthoof[2]) are large, hairy, kodo-like beasts native to Draenor. In Outland, they can only be found in Nagrand, but they are still plentiful on the alternate Draenor.
Large enough to quake the ground, covered with a thick valuable pelt, and armed with enormous tusks, these gigantic beasts are a hunter’s most treasured prize and worst nightmare rolled into one. The meat of a single adult clefthoof can feed an orc clan for days, but their inclination to travel in large packs makes them dangerous prey - beware their devastating headbutt or swiping attacks with their formidable tusks. Fortunately, it’s nearly impossible to be surprised by these massive beasts – heroes will be able to see and hear them coming from far away![2] They are known for violently defending their young.[3]
It appears that ancient orcs hunted clefthoof and used their neck plating as ritual ornamentation for various sites. The Ancestral Grounds is an example of this. It is known that the animals would migrate every winter, with the Frostwolf clan - who hunted the herds alongside their frost wolves - following in their wake.[4]
Notable clefthoof are Brokentoe, an old clefthoof who was the first challenge faced in the Ring of Blood,[5] and the ancient Banthar, whose horn was wanted as proof of hunting skill by Hemet Nesingwary.[6]
Every year, great herds of clefthoof migrate through Gorgrond, causing tremors and dust storms.[7]
Biology
The clefthoof are the "wooly cousins" of the kodo,[8] but are not biologically related, having developed independently on separate worlds. Clefthoof became sickly and corrupt as a result of Draenor's fel corruption and subsequent transformation into Outland.[9]
Clefthoof meat and milk are both suitable for consuming.[10][11]
Clefthoof fat can be used in a ritual with a gronn's eyeball and a few roc beaks to be granted visions of the spirit world.[12]
Their hides can be crafted into armor,[13] and the Warsong clan have long hunted the bloodhoof clefthooves to use their crimson-hued skin for battle standards.[14]
Shed clefthoof hair gets in everything.[15] Witherhide clefthooves have notches that cover their hooves, allowing them to scale mountains in search of food.[16] A translucent layer of down hair covers the Tundra clefthoof breed's leathery hide, acting as the perfect insulation for cold environments.[17] They are not just sturdy pack animals, but also powerful instruments of war.[18]

In the Warlords of Draenor, clefthooves became tamable and had the rhino pet family merged into this one. Only Beast Master hunters will be able to tame these exotic beasts. Despite being decent tanks, they are not as popular in instances, due in part to their large size.
Patch changes
Patch 6.0.2 (2014-10-14): Became tamable.
Notes
- They are skinnable for
[Thick Clefthoof Leather] and drop
[Clefthoof Meat] when killed.
[Fine Taladorian Cheese Platter] is made from the milk of draenei-farmed and orchid-fed clefthooves.
- A clefthoof named Gray Maw was found in Stormheim during the World of Warcraft: Legion's beta. They, alongside their associated quest, were removed before the expansion went live, likely due to the fact that Clefthooves are not native to Azeroth.

This article or section includes speculation, observations or opinions possibly supported by lore or by Blizzard officials. It should not be taken as representing official lore.

in Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne, the Fel Orc Kodo Beasts serving the Fel Horde in Outland might have been clefthooves instead.
