The Stonemaul clan[3] (or the Stonemaul Ogres) is an ogre clan which was allied with the orcs and, after the Second War, separated in two — one part sailing west to Kalimdor and establishing a village in Dustwallow Marsh[4] while the other remained in Lordaeron.[5]

History

Third War

Rexxar challenges Warlord Kor'gall to battle for leadership of the Stonemaul clan.

After the defeat of the Old Horde in the Second War, the ogre clans dispersed in all directions. While some escaped back through the Dark Portal into Draenor, others either remained in the Eastern Kingdoms or made the difficult journey across the ocean to Kalimdor.[6] For unknown reasons, the Stonemaul clan split in two, with one branch remaining in Lordaeron and the other traveling to Kalimdor to establish themselves in the Dustwallow Marsh.

Members of the Eastern Kingdoms branch of the clan were seen roaming the Ruins of Dalaran during the battle between the night elves, blood elves, and Illidan Stormrage's naga.[7] The Stonemaul in Lordaeron later became involved in the conflict between the self-styled Dark Lady Sylvanas Windrunner and the dreadlord Varimathras. Seeking to bolster her forces, Sylvanas had their leader Mug'thol possessed by a banshee, after which the clan pledged their allegiance to her.[8]

While the Stonemaul in Lordaeron fought for the Dark Lady, the Kalimdor branch fell under the control of Kor'gall, who had come into possession of the ancient orcish axe Serathil. Kor'gall's rule was brutal and merciless. One ogre, whose brothers had been slain by Kor'gall, realized that the clan was being led to ruin. Barely escaping with his life, he sought help wherever he could. His quest eventually brought him to the Horde.

Rexxar, now leader of the Stonemaul clan, orders the ogres to prepare for the assault on Theramore Isle.

Kor'gall was soon approached by Rexxar, a Mok'Nathal of the Horde. Rexxar demanded to join the clan, and Kor'gall agreed—on the condition that he survive the Gauntlet, a valley filled with deadly beasts, thereby completing the Trial of Strength. Rexxar and his companions survived, impressing Kor'gall, who allowed him to join. Rexxar's first request was that the clan aid the Horde, but Kor'gall refused, vowing never again to honor their former allies. Frustrated, Rexxar invoked his right to challenge Kor'gall for leadership. Kor'gall agreed, but warned that he was not as slow-witted as Rexxar might think.

After several attempts, Rexxar finally slew Kor'gall in the Trial of Blood. As he died, the last thing Kor'gall heard was his own warriors cheering for Rexxar. With Kor'gall's death, Rexxar assumed the position of chieftain. He then led the Stonemaul ogres back to Tidefury Cove, where Thrall was assembling the Horde. Thrall sent both his soldiers and the Stonemaul ogres to Theramore to hold back Proudmoore's forces, while Rexxar and a few companions cut through the battle to confront Proudmoore and his retainers. In the end, Rexxar and Proudmoore clashed in mortal combat, and Rexxar emerged victorious.[9]

The Stonemaul Village in ruins after being attacked and taken over by Onyxia's flight.

After the battle, Rexxar disappeared into the Barrens wilderness and appointed the ogre Mok'Morokk as the leader of the clan. Although Mok'Morokk had displayed strength under Rexxar's leadership, he soon succumbed to the temptations of power after Rexxar's departure. Rather than lead, he demanded; he did not serve his people, expecting them instead to serve him.

While the Kalimdor branch of the clan endured Mok'Morokk's rule, Sylvanas Windrunner sent Mug'thol and his ogres to retrieve the  [Crown of Will]. However, instead of returning the crown to Sylvanas, he tried it on. The Crown of Will enabled him to free himself from the banshee's control, and he defected, establishing himself and his band of ogres in the Ruins of Alterac as the Crushridge ogres.[10]

In time, Stonemaul Village was raided by Onyxia's brood. The daughter of the black dragonlord Deathwing was there for a greater purpose—one the ogres did not understand.

When the black dragonflight attacked Stonemaul Village, Mok'Morokk led the clan to Brackenwall Village. While some expected the ogres to retaliate against the dragons, no counterattack occurred.[11] He ruled until an adventurer of the Horde drove him out, and he fled. The clan now seeks a new leader. Draz'Zilb, who orchestrated the attack, suggested that Tharg could lead, but he is hindered by injuries and age.[12]

The Burning Crusade

When Overlord Mok'Morokk refused to avenge the clan, Brogg left Brackenwall Village and took up residence in Mudsprocket.

At his direction, adventurers were called to reclaim the Stonemaul banner,[13] and to place the fallen Stonemaul spirits to rest within the Stonemaul Ruins.[14] Following the death of Smolderwing, Brogg revealed that he would never abandon his quest to restore the Stonemaul to their rightful place.[15]

Krog feared that Brackenwall might become the next target of the Grimtotem tribe and ordered Horde champions to retrieve the Grimtotem Battle Plans from Blackhoof Village. From these plans, the Horde learned that Agashem had instructed the Grimtotem to halt the Alliance's advance while keeping the Stonemaul in the dark.[16]

Cataclysm

Cataclysm This section concerns content related to Cataclysm.

During the Cataclysm, the Stonemaul clan expanded into Feralas and established a base of operations in western Feralas, near Dire Maul, called Stonemaul Hold. The Stonemaul aided the Horde in confronting the local population of hostile ogres—the Gordunni and their Gordok caste—under the command of Orhan Ogreblade.

According to Orhan, the Stonemaul warlock Swar'jan had good ideas and advised Horde champions to heed his suggestions.[17] Through Swar'jan's efforts, the Stonemaul discovered that Cho'gall and the Twilight's Hammer were operating within Dire Maul.[18] The Stonemaul subsequently joined Orhan and the champion in battle against Cho'gall, ultimately driving him from Dire Maul.[19]

A small army of Stonemaul ogres was sent into the northern wing of Dire Maul, where, after receiving Horde reinforcements,[20] they attempted to kill King Gordok and claim Dire Maul for the Horde.[21] However, the Horde forces ultimately failed.[22]

At Krog's command, Gim'hila went to Booty Bay to acquire new recruits to help prevent the Stonemaul from being overrun.[23] Krog subsequently welcomed them to Brackenwall.[24] Spiders in the nearby Darkmist Cavern became a significant threat to Brackenwall. Although Krog was confident the Stonemaul could handle them, he disliked splitting their focus while Theramore's forces were nearby. Therefore, he called upon Horde champions to destroy the eggs within the cavern and eliminate their broodqueen.[25][26]

In the RPG

Most ogres are savage and evil, as unruly as any forest troll. However, the Stonemaul clan defies this mold and exists in a lawful and semi-democratic society. They perform trials to decide anything from a new leader to going to war, and have willingly joined the Horde. Unlike the wild and uncontrollable clans elsewhere on Azeroth, the Stonemaul ogres are tightly organized, following a specific hierarchy of power.

When Rexxar departed and appointed Mok'Morokk as chieftain, Onyxia laid waste to their home. In the meantime, Draz'Zilb uses the clan's few remaining resources to investigate why Onyxia attacked them in the first place. The bottom line here is that the Stonemaul clan is no longer in any condition to support the Horde on the battlefield. A number of ogres survived Onyxia's attacks, but they are disorganized and fight among themselves.

Stonemaul ogres have no chieftain at the moment, and a consensus of the eldest ogres of the clan makes most of the Stonemauls' decisions, along with words of advice from Horde emissaries and counselors.[29]

Speculation

This article or section includes speculation, observations or opinions possibly supported by lore or by Blizzard officials. It should not be taken as representing official lore.

It is unknown how and when exactly they arrived to Kalimdor, but they may have done it at the end of the Second War with Cho'gall and the Twilight's Hammer (although they must have been with them on the Broken Isles and would later split off). Alternatively, as the ogres are said to be shipbuilders,[32] they could have arrived on their own at any other point after the Second, or Third War when the existence of Kalimdor was revealed.
