“Led by the stalwart Scalecommander Azurathel, the Obsidian Warders were trained to be the shield of the black dragonflight. Today these dracthyr use those skills to defend those most in need against overwhelming odds.”
- — In-game faction description
The Obsidian Warders is a weyrn once charged with defending the allies of the black dragonflight and protecting its strongholds. Whether it is deployed to reinforce draconic legions or guard the skies alongside dragons, this weyrn is the embodiment of the Earth-Warder's aegis. Put into a slumber that lasted for 20 000 years, the Primalists' return caused the Obsidian Warders to stir and forge their own path in Azeroth by joining the Alliance.[1][2] Currently under the authority of the Scalecommander Azurathel, the Warders trained to be the bulwark that enemy forces will break upon.[3] Azurathel believes that given time, the Alliance can be molded into a more unified and dignified fighting force, as he values order and discipline above all—and the Alliance has both in spades.[4]
History
Ancient times

20 000 BDP, Scalecommander Azurathel was one of the dracthyr created by Neltharion, who would come to select him to serve as the leader of the Obsidian Warders. The Aspect of Earth fashioned the Forbidden Reach as a secret training ground for the dracthyr,[5] where at his command Azurathel would train the weyrn in their charge with defending the allies of the black dragonflight and protecting its strongholds.[3]
In a battle with Raszageth and the Primal Incarnates, the Oathbinder used by Neltharion to control the wills of the dracthyr was destroyed. Though Raszageth was sealed away, Neltharion could no longer directly control the dracthyr without the relic and so deemed them a risk. Azurathel and his people were thus subsequently ordered to the creches beneath the Forbidden Reach by Neltharion, where they were sealed away by Malygos in magical stasis and watched over by his blue dragonflight. They remained there for millenia, awakened from their long slumber only when the Primalists returned to break Raszageth free.[6]
Dragonflight
After Raszageth's attack, the Obsidian Warders were forced to evacuate the Forbidden Reach with the help of Wrathion, Ebyssian, and Nozdormu. Guided by Wrathion they headed to Stormwind City to warn the other races of Azeroth. As the dracthyr neared the city gates, they were approached by the Stormwind City Guard, however, Mathias Shaw soon arrived and after a brief exchange allowed the group to enter the city under the responsibility of the Black Prince.[7] While the weyrn began to discover the capital and its inhabitants, Scalecommander Azurathel and Wrathion met Lord Commander Turalyon at Stormwind Keep and presented the Dragon Aspects invitation to visit the Dragon Isles. negotiations, Azurathel then declared that his dracthyr would accompany the Alliance on their journey, while reflecting that it would take time to build trust between them, which Turalyon admitted to perfectly understood as a fellow soldier.[8]
Following Fyrakk's death, Azurathel revealed to Emberthal and Cindrethresh that the Obsidian Warders had found a place within the Alliance and believed that Turalyon admired their discipline.[9]
The War Within
The Obsidian Warders returned to the Forbidden Reach, where they aided in the awakening of new dracthyr creches. As more of the Obsidian Warders awakened, they were directed to Stormwind and encouraged to do their weyrn proud as they started the rest of their lives.[10]
