Hyena
Hyenas are large carnivorous beasts found primarily in the barren areas of Kalimdor. Most dangerous when traveling in packs, they possess tremendous strength in their jowls.[1] Rotting corpses attract hyenas, and from feeding on the dead—such as the Hecklefang Scavenger that savage corpses by tearing at bowels and dragging away limbs—they often have an ability to inflict dangerous diseases on those who fight them.[2][3] They can be quite noisy, caterwauling through the night, and are considered pests that steal kills, rummage through supplies, and even make off with livestock like stabled pigs, yet they are not considered good for eating.[4][5]
They are kept as pets by the Centaur hunters in the Barrens and Desolace, the Gordunni ogres in Feralas, and the Amathet Tol'vir in Uldum. Gnolls, hyena-like humanoids, are also known to do the same when there is enough food to share. Hyenas also serve as mounts and pets for Uldum's desert pygmies, Vol'dun's vulpera, and the goblins of Undermine. The Wastewanders of Uldum use the pelts of local hyenas to make armor.[6]
They are found in the Azure Span, the Barrens, Blasted Lands, Desolace, Dragonblight, Feralas, Silithus, Tanaris, Thaldraszus, Townlong Steppes, Uldum, Undermine, and Vol'dun.

Hyenas are pack hunters infamous for their cunning and their unnerving vocalizations. A favorite tactic is to send a few individuals against the foe’s front while the rest of the pack circles and attacks from the flanks or rear.[8] The striped hyena is about 3 feet long and weighs about 120 pounds.[8]
Dire hyena
Dire hyenas are large hyenas. They are massive, striped animals with slavering jaws. They are known to throw their heads back and scream with a hysterical-seeming laugh. Dire hyenas chase both lions and their smaller cousins away from prey; hunting in packs, they are particularly dangerous. Dire hyenas are about 8 feet long and 5 feet high and weigh more than 800 pounds. A dire hyena pack often sends in a few of its members to harass prey while the rest of the pack circles for position. During this delaying action, the foremost hyenas fight defensively; when the full pack is in position, it charges as a unit.[9]
