The Empyrean Society of Exotic Magical Arts[1] (acronym E.S.E.M.A.) is a dangerous cult[2] established in the Empyrean Society Enclave in Azsuna. They claimed to study all magic regardless of its source, but in reality they focused mostly on the forbidden dark magic. Even worse, the Tirisgarde discovered that they had begun delving into the practice of fel magic.[2][3]
Background
During the third invasion of the Burning Legion, the Tirisgarde discovered some sort of powerful magic emanating from the Empyrean Society Enclave in Azsuna.[4] Knowing they would welcome them in exchange of magical artifacts, the Conjuror of the Tirisgarde recovered Pearl of Arcane Wisdom and scrolls from the Hatecoil naga in Nar'thalas Academy, and infiltrated the enclave with Ravandwyr and Esara Verrinde.[2]
During their investigations, as the group interrogated several cultists across the area, they discovered that the organization had begun delving into the practice of fel magic. They also confiscated several of their fel tomes in the process,[5] until Ravandwyr was discovered by Marlan Blackfire.[3] After they dealt with him, Esara tasked the Conjuror to reduce the Empyrean Society forces, so they could not corrupt anyone else.[6] Using a rune of opening, the Conjuror eventually entered the building and killed their leader, Nora Blackfire.[7]
In the aftermath, a missive revealed that Archmage Vargoth was somehow involved with the Empyrean Society.[8] Troubled by these revelations, Khadgar gave him the benefit of the doubt since the archmage had proven his loyalty to the Kirin Tor many times in the past.[9] The Conjuror and the Council of Six later discovered the truth from the archmage himself. While he was gathering notes on the Nightborne Soulstone, Vargoth was contacted by an emissary of the Empyrean Society, only to find the nathrezim Kathra'natir waiting for him at their enclave to possess his body.[10]
