The Angerfang[1] are a sub-group of the Dragonmaw clan that largely operates out of the Wetlands. The Angerfang were long time supporters of both Nekros Skullcrusher and Nek'rosh Skullcrusher; a decision regretted by their leader, Gorfax Angerfang.[1]

History

WoW Icon update.png This section concerns content related to the original World of Warcraft.

The Dragonmaw were all but destroyed after they lost control of their red dragons after the Second War. The dragons were not happy with their old masters and fiercely hunted the Dragonmaw. What few remained fled from Grim Batol, with one group seeking refuge in the mountains of the Wetlands, specifically at the Angerfang Encampment east of Whelgar's Excavation Site. Nekros' son, Nek'rosh Skullcrusher, took up leadership of the clan and vowed revenge against the dragons who slew his father. While not the same threat as they were when they had dragons, these Dragonmaw were still fierce opponents.[2]

While they normally hid in the hills, a group of Dragonmaw expanded into Dun Algaz, threatening to cut off Loch Modan from Menethil Harbor in the Wetlands.[3] Meanwhile, Nek'rosh aimed to lay siege to Menethil itself — which would have been effectively blocked from reinforcements due to the fighting in Algaz — and ordered the construction of several catapults.[4] He was ultimately defeated by Alliance adventurers and his head was brought to Captain Stoutfist, thus ending the Dragonmaw threat to Menethil.[5] Captain Stoutfist had also adventurers bring him war banners from the defeated Angerfangs.[2]

Velora Nitely sent Horde warriors after their shinbones to create legguards.[6] Krom Stoutarm and Jorah Annison asked adventuring warlocks to bring the Angerfangs' rods of channeling to Strahad Farsan.[7]

Cataclysm

Cataclysm This section concerns content related to Cataclysm.

Following the Cataclysm, the Angerfang are led exclusively by Gorfax Angerfang, describing him as 'chief' of the Angerfang Dragonmaw. He was attacked by Alliance adventurers sent by Prospector Whelgar to ensure that the Dragonmaw do not attack them at Whelgar's Retreat.[8]

According to Gorfax, the Angerfang joined Hellscream's Horde alongside the rest of the Dragonmaw clan.[1] It is unknown whether or not any of the group sided with Hellscream during the rise of the True Horde or defected into the Iron Horde.

Legion

Gorfax Angerfang visiting the Undercity.

Despite his defeat at the hands of the Alliance adventurer, Gorfax could be found in the Undercity alongside other notable leaders of the Horde when a Horde adventurer reached Prestige Rank 2. He was present at the ceremony hosted by Sylvanas Windrunner that congratulated the character for their battles against the Alliance, following their receiving of the  [High Warlord's Medal of Valor] from the Warchief.[9]

Dragonflight

Dragonflight This section concerns content related to Dragonflight.

By the time of the first Azerothian Kosh'harg festival, Gorfax has become chieftain. He recounts the dishonor of the Angerfang in supporting the previous leaders of the Dragonmaw, but vows to do better by rebuilding the Dragonmaw as a whole in a legacy free of enslaving others.[1]

Items

A number of items added in Cataclysm as random world drops are named for the group:

Notes

  • The Angerfang existed in the game since vanilla, though Gorfax himself was only added in Cataclysm. In World of Warcraft, they originally all had the same chartreuse yellow skin color already accessible to orc player characters, giving them a distinct look as a group. Their appearance was later retconned to be more in line with the Twilight Highlands Dragonmaw orcs.
  • None of the members of the group, outside of Gorfax in certain limited appearances, are actually friendly towards Horde players. While the Horde no longer has any quests concerning them, the Dragonmaw orcs in the Wetlands were not added to the actual Dragonmaw clan faction in Cataclysm, thus leaving them hostile to everyone.
    • Gorfax himself is actually not friendly in his open-world appearance either; able to ironically be killed by Horde players. He is friendly during his Undercity and orc Heritage armor appearances, however.
  • An unused Horde quest given by Truek would have Horde warriors travel south to punish the Dragonmaw for ignoring the Warchief's mandate and sullying the name of the Horde. It is unknown what mandate this was, or if these Dragonmaw were meant to originally be part of the New Horde but ignoring some sort of order.[10]
  • During the scrapped Legion Invasions of the Wetlands, the above-listed generic Dragonmaws were seemingly planned to appear based on their unused IDs. There would also be Dragonmaw Captives.

Speculation

This article or section includes speculation, observations or opinions possibly supported by lore or by Blizzard officials. It should not be taken as representing official lore.

Besides the orcs at and around the Angerfang Encampment, Dragonmaw Whelpstealers are found at the Green Belt, while Ma'ruk Wyrmscale, Dragonmaw Scouts, and Dragonmaw Grunts are found at Dun Algaz. They may or may not belong to the Angerfang group.
