World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King Classic (shortened as Wrath Classic or Wotlk Classic) was a Classic server option launched in September 2022 which allowed playing content and game mechanics of the 2008 expansion Wrath of the Lich King. It was available during the last couple months of the modern Shadowlands period and most of Dragonflight, having been announced alongside the latter. Like prior Classic releases, the game played almost identically to its original version, with the most notable changes being tweaks to difficulty and progression of Heroic dungeons and certain raids.

There are no Classic Era servers for expansions, so Wrath Classic characters simply remained on their realms as they transitioned to Cataclysm Classic. However, the Wrath experience is likely to become available again when World of Warcraft: Classic 20th Anniversary Edition servers eventually progress to it.

Release timeline

Like with World of Warcraft: Classic & Burning Crusade Classic, content was released in phases. This is the release timeline of Wrath of the Lich King Classic:

Changes

  • Dungeon Finder, introduced with patch 3.3.0, was originally announced not to be available. However, after player feedback, Blizzard confirmed that the Dungeon Finder would be added to the game with the Fall of the Lich King update.[6]
  • Arena teams will be removed and the ratings will be personal.
  • Barber shop will introduce additional customization options instead of sticking to the authentic 2008 behavior, which includes some that were originally only available via a paid service.
  • Hysteria, a blood death knight talent, will instead be using its Cataclysm name, [Unholy Frenzy].
  • Titan Rune Dungeon is a new dungeon difficulty mode based off the Mythic+ mode in retail
    • Done to make Heroic Dungeons attractive throughout the expansion, have the emblems and items stay valuable
  • Daily Quests now reset at 7 AM realm time, in order to coincide with all other daily resets as of 6 February 2023.
  • Emblems
    • Emblems will drop every tier. At launch, Emblems of Valor will drop from raids while Emblems of Heroism drop from Heroic Dungeons.
    • With Ulduar's release, Emblems of Valor now drop from Heroic Dungeons while Emblems of Conquest drop from all bosses in Ulduar.
  • Raid changes
    • Raid Lockouts - It will not change every phase as it did originally. You can change the difficulty between bosses.
    • Naxxramas - Health and damage of monsters has been increased as the intented in 2008 was just to make it slightly easier. Instead, it was way too easy so this change is to make it a bit more challenging.
    • Trial of the Grand Crusader - You no longer need to clear Trial of the Crusader before attempting.
    • Onyxia's Lair - Able to swap between Level 60 (Classic/Vanilla) & Level 80 (Wrath) versions by speaking with Zidormi outside the entrance
  • Collections was introduced, along with the Toy Box. Originally introduced with Warlords of Draenor.
  • (China only) Transmogrification was introduced, along with transmogging legendaries. Originally introduced with Cataclysm while transmogging legendaries wasn't made possible until Battle for Azeroth (with some exceptions happening sooner or later).
