Hammerfall is the capital city of the Mag'har Clans within the Arathi Highlands.[2] It was once one of the largest of the Alliance of Lordaeron's internment camps, and where Orgrim Doomhammer fell during the liberation of the orcs by Warchief Thrall. Following the Third War, the ruins were re-occupied by the Horde as the unofficial refuge for discontents who felt that they had no place in the current world.

During the Fourth War, Hammerfall was reinforced into a stronghold, and following the end of the conflict, it was here that Overlord Geya'rah and the Mag'har Clans from alternate Draenor made a fresh start on Azeroth, as the surrounding lands are much like Nagrand.

History

Lord of the Clans

After the Second War, the settlement that would become known as Hammerfall was one of the largest of the Alliance internment camps. It was later attacked and destroyed by the Horde led by Orgrim Doomhammer and Thrall in order to free the orcs held captive there. In the midst of the chaos created by Thrall to cover their retreat, Orgrim was mortally wounded by a strike to the back — impaled by a charging knight's lance with enough force to pierce the back plate of his armor and his body, denting the breastplate from the inside.[3]

World of Warcraft

Shortly after the end of the Third War, the Horde re-occupied the ruins of Hammerfall and used it as a forward base in the Arathi Highlands. The outpost was named in honor of the fallen Warchief Orgrim Doomhammer, who was killed during the camp's liberation. Some time after, the Forsaken Defilers based themselves here as well, in order to secure the Arathi Basin supplies for the Forsaken forces, but also to weaken the Alliance forces there.

In time, the Boulderfist clan and the Witherbark tribe allied with one another in order to order to wipe out Hammerfall.[4] Fearing Hammerfalls' demise Tallow recruited Horde champions to strike against the ogres at Boulder'gor.[5] Following their success, Drum Fel had them press the attack by striking at the Witherbark,[6] and rest of the Boulderfist within Boulderfist Hall,[7] and even within Stromgarde itself.[8] With their enemies dealt with, Drum felt that Hammerfall would begin to thrive in the Highlands.[9]

Cataclysm

At some point prior to the Cataclysm, the Darkspear trolls left the village. While Zengu departed in a failed attempt to bring the sword Trol'kalar to the Darkspear for their war against the Gurubashi tribe, where he was slain by the forces of Stromgarde who retrieved the sword,[10] it is unknown why Tor'gan left.

In order to protect Hammerfall, Drum Fel once again called upon Horde adventurers to crush the Witherbark tribe, as they worked with the Boulderfist ogres to rid them from the land.[11]

War Crimes

WoW-novel-logo-16x62.png This section concerns content related to the Warcraft novels, novellas, or short stories.

By the time of Garrosh Hellscream's trial in Pandaria, Hammerfall was known as the unofficial refuge for discontents who felt that they had no place in the current world. This was taken advantage of by the bronze dragon Kairoz who secretly sent Shokia there under deep cover until the time was right to call her into action.[12]

Battle for Azeroth

During the Fourth War, as the conflict erupted between the Alliance and Horde at Stromgarde Keep and Ar'gorok, Hammerfall was rebuilt with new Horde architecture replacing the dilapidated human buildings.

Heartlands

Amid the armistice at the end of the Fourth War, Overlord Geya'rah and the Mag'har Clans were granted Hammerfall as a place for their people to make a fresh start on Azeroth.

Following their arrival to the Arathi Highlands, there was peace between Hammerfall and Stromgarde. However when Danath Trollbane instilled his niece, Marran as his regent when his duty drew him to Stormwind City, things changed. Within months of her regency, she called upon the 7th Legion, while claiming that it would help Stromgarde do its part, protecting farms from predators. However, their patrols began roaming farther and farther from their base and what had been once amicable encounters between their forces gave way to violence. In response, Geya'rah called upon the Kor'kron to help them train and deter action from Stromgarde. Geya'rah also called upon Eitrigg as an advisor.

Ten days following the destruction of Dalaran by Xal'atath, Lord Danath proposed securing the 7th Legion and the Kor'kron within the Arathi Highlands as their strike force for Khaz Algar. When Thrall, Aggra, and Jaina Proudmoore arrived in the Highlands, they discovered the fallen bodies of a skirmish between the Horde and Alliance. Aggra was quick to travel to Hammerfall, where she sought to stay Geya'rah's hand while requesting the Kor'kron.

In time, an injured and poisoned Thrall was delivered to Hammerfall by the Kor'kron and healed by the Lok'osh.

After receiving word that the Alliance were attacking the Go'Shek Farm, Geya'rah led the Horde army from Hammerfall into battle. After concluding that the battle upon the Go'Shek Farm was one without honor, she would sound a horn and call for the Kor'kron and Mag'har to hold and called upon the 7th Legion and Stromic army to do the same. The Alliance followed suit and when Marran protested, she found herself arrested by Danath Trollbane himself, who formally apologized for her actions. With the Kor'kron and 7th Legion now united, Thrall and Jaina now had their strike force, and the Kor'kron departed from Hammerfall.[2]

Points of interest

Hammerfall before Battle for Azeroth.

There is a flight master, an inn, a mailbox, and a few quest keepers inside of Hammerfall. Behind the village is the Horde portal to fight in Arathi Basin. Arathi quest givers and Arathi Basin token vendors are located there.

This is also the location of the Hammerfall Hospital, where the Horde Triage can be taken for Artisan First Aid. Doctor Gregory Victor teaches Runecloth and Heavy Runecloth Bandages.

Hammerfall is under siege from the combined forces of Boulderfist Ogres and Witherbark tribe of Arathi. In addition to the H [32] The Hammer May Fall quest chain, groups of 5 Witherbark trolls occasionally spawn from the Witherbark Village in the south. They run up the path to Hammerfall's front gate and start attacking the guards. While the guards are capable of staving off each attack, players can also engage the attacking trolls, adding to the sense of threat from the Horde's enemies in the highlands.

In the RPG

Icon-RPG.png This section contains information from the Warcraft RPG which is considered non-canon.

A small Horde outpost, Hammerfall, provides some sanity in the Arathi Highlands. Orgrim Doomhammer, once the Horde's Warchief, fell at this historic location. After the Second War, Hammerfall became an internment camp for the leaderless orcs. Now, members of Thrall’s Horde occupy the camp.[13]

Notes and trivia

Thrall and Geya'rah argue within the keep of Hammerfall. Note the throne behind them that is reminiscent of the one in Orgrimmar, complete with what appears to be a pitlord skull.
  • Hammmerfall appears to have been expanded as of Heartlands.
    • Hammerfall is stated to now have many watch towers.[14] In the game, it has two.
    • It boasts a military barracks, within which Thrall recovered after being poisoned outside of Stromgarde Keep.[15]
    • It also boasts a keep with 'several corridors' and a large central chamber.[15]
    • None of these buildings exist in any capacity in game. The keep can be seen in the backdrop of one of the artworks for Heartlands. It appears to have a throne reminiscent of the one in Grommash Hold.
    • It also boasts a council chamber where Thrall meets with Eitrigg, Geya'rah, and Talgar.
  • The name Hammerfall is taken from the Swedish power metal band with the same name. Blizzard employee Samwise Didier has painted several covers for the band so it is likely to be a tribute to the band as well as to Doomhammer.

The Hammerfall Guardians and Grunts wear blue armor. They might be soldiers sent by the Frostwolf clan.
