“Others shout, and fight, and abandon reason. But we listen. The spirits of the elements tell us much about the world--its love as well as its pain.
Through that connection we are able to see many things to which others are blind, and guide our world forward safely.”
The Earthen Ring is a neutral faction of shaman dedicated to preserving the balance between the elements. This gathering of the most powerful shaman of Azeroth seeks to maintain the balance between the world's elemental forces, unlike its sinister adversary, the Twilight's Hammer cult. Led by the Council of Elders, it includes shaman from both the Alliance and the Horde, who put aside old rivalries for the good of the world.[3] As the true masters of the elements, they wield the power of the elemental forces between which they maintain balance.[4] Those who assist the Earthen Ring find themselves rewarded with items that reflect the wisdom and primal power of the elements.[5] During the Cataclysm, they healed the world and the elements wherever they could. They also fought the Burning Legion alongside the other class orders during the demons' third invasion.
History
Founding
The group was originally founded by tauren some time before the year -230 to lead their people with wisdom and maintain the harmony between the elemental spirits.[6]
The first Farseer of the Earthen Ring was given a vision of the elements. In the vision, she foresaw the arrival of a new Farseer, one who would lead them through a time of terrible crisis and unite the elements. Centuriers later, Nobundo believed that the shaman adventurer was the Farseer of this prophecy, called to lead before they were ever born. Neptulon himself remembered the prophecy and, sensing the potential for great power within the Farseer, waited to see if it held true.[7]
At some point, the summoning and controlling of molten giants was forbidden by the Earthen Ring, as the use of such coercion could anger the elements and trigger an event similar to the Cataclysm.[8]
Shaman - past
When Sorcerer-thane Thaurissan released Ragnaros during the War of the Three Hammers, shattering the Redridge Mountains of the Eastern Kingdoms, the effects of the natural upheaval were felt as far as Kalimdor. The western continent suffered from natural disasters ranging from earthquakes to the land shattering apart. Oreg Earthfury was a member of the Earthen Ring who convened to discuss the effects of the natural upheaval and how to deal with the threat to their people. With the world being so chaotic, at times the elements had refused to answer the calls of the shaman, making the shamans' role in defending their people from the natural disasters difficult. While Shotoa advocated that they take a more commanding role with the elements and force the elements to do as they demand, Oreg advocated for the Earthen Ring to follow their traditions of old and continue bargaining for and borrowing the powers of the elements. When the earthquakes hit a tauren camp, Oreg and other shamans rescued some of the tauren. However, several such as Shotoa and his apprentice Kiche, were presumed dead when they fell into fissures.[9]
After the Third War
Following the Third War, the Earthen Ring began inducting Horde shaman into their order, including orcs and Darkspear trolls. To convince the Horde to accept the Forsaken, the undead ambassadors claimed that they merely sought a cure for their degenerative condition, which they said only the powers of shamanism and the life-giving energies of the earth could provide. In exchange for this healing aid, the Forsaken vowed to support the Horde in all of its ventures throughout Lordaeron and Azeroth. Having done battle with the Scourge on many occasions, Warchief Thrall and Chieftain Cairne Bloodhoof were immediately suspicious of Sylvanas Windrunner's motives. However, due to growing political tensions, they agreed to listen to the Ring's Elder Council which argued that it was the Horde's duty to aid the Forsaken, who wrestled with inner demons just as the orcs had for generations.[10] While the shaman had pure intentions towards the Forsaken, there were some who wondered about the motivations of those whispering about it in the ears of the Elder Council.[11]

At some point, the Earthen Ring awarded Krog with armor crafted by Mosarn.[12] What for, is unknown.
The Burning Crusade
By the time of the invasion of Outland, some draenei and Broken were taught the path of the shaman under Farseer Nobundo, and later integrated the ranks of the Earthen Ring to heal Outland.
At the Throne of the Elements, the Earthen Ring collaborated with the Furies of Outland to bring peace to the restless elemental spirits of Nagrand. Elementalist Lo'ap, under the guidance of Watoosun of the Water, instructed adventurers to kill the destructive Lake Spirits nearby and aid them with securing Incineratus' blessing.[13] With the fiery essence of Incineratus himself granted to the heroes, Lo'ap tasked his agents to set fire to Windyreed Village, whose inhabitants had agitated the water spirits in their efforts to create a marshland in Nagrand.[14] Meanwhile, Watoosun cleansed the water spirits of their corruption; but in doing so, created a twisted spirit essence. Lo'ap sent adventurers to purge Watoosun's Polluted Essence and its offspring, the Lake Surgers.[15] Gordawg also directed adventurers to kill tainted earth elementals and destroying the one responsible for their corruption: Gurok the Usurper.[16][17] Elementalist Morgh also sent the heroes to slay Murkblood Putrifiers, who have been using dark shamanism to control air spirits.[18]

Shaman - present
At the time of the Cataclysm, while Azeroth was in a chaotic state, the elements refused to answer the calls of the shaman, until the tauren Shotoa reappeared to save Camp Narache from a fire and centaur attack. He claimed that the life force of Azeroth had saved his life and had been preserving him. He advocated for a more commanding role with the elements, to force them to obey, and managed to convince many of the Earthen Ring shaman, including some members of the Elder Council, to abandon their traditional methods. However, Muln Earthfury discovered the betrayal of Shotoa, who was in reality a fire elemental sent by Ragnaros to destroy the organization. When Shotoa led his followers to a Grimtotem ambush in the hope of weakening the Earthen Ring, Muln and his allies arrived to save them, but with the elements in disarray, they were at a disadvantage against the Grimtotem warriors and shaman who were using Shotoa's more reliable shamanistic methods. During the battle, Muln motivated all the elements to work together, telling them that they'd all be threatened with slavery under Shotoa and his fire elementals, and together they ultimately killed the servant of Ragnaros.[19]
Cataclysm
The Earthen Ring journeyed to the place where Deathwing had burst into Azeroth from Deepholm, the Maelstrom. His breakout had left a scar between the surface of Azeroth and the Elemental Plane. This instability cascaded over the world, stirring the elemental spirits into an even greater frenzy. Healing the rift that Deathwing made would prevent the destruction from unfolding across Azeroth.[3] Deathwing's violent exit from Deepholm had also shattered the World Pillar, which bore the weight of all magnetic and elemental forces there, causing all of Deepholm to slowly collapse into Azeroth.
In time, the Earthen Ring gathered in areas of elemental unrest to restore balance to the world. They called for help from the Horde and the Alliance, from anyone wise enough to put aside their warmongering and focus on sparing Azeroth from destruction. The same heroes who had fought in Northrend, Outland, and Ahn'Qiraj answered the Earthen Ring's call to protect their home. These adventurers spearheaded missions across the world, notably in Deepholm where they destroyed the Twilight's Hammer's presence, allowing the Earthen Ring to repair the damage caused to the World Pillar by Deathwing's reemergence.[20]
Several members of the organization were also involved in the unfolding events in Vashj'ir. Their task was to protect the Abyssal Maw and aid the servants of Neptulon in their war against the naga. The organization's ranks were added to with the inclusion of Wildhammer dwarves and goblins. Its members were also present in the Twilight Highlands.
During the Old Gods' assault on Wyrmrest Temple, several members of the Earthen Ring protected Thrall with their life as he transported the Dragon Soul to the Dragon Aspects.
Tides of War
After the death of Deathwing, Muln Earthfury stepped down from his position as the leader of the Ring, and Thrall became the main leader.[21] Its members continued to heal the world from Maelstrom.[22]
Warlords of Draenor
During the war in Draenor, the Earthen Ring kindly requested that all plundered mail armor be divided equally among those who wear it. Otherwise, the elements might have become displeased.[23]
Legion
| This section is a lore stub. |
During the Battle for Broken Shore, the Earthen Ring shaman accompanied Thrall and the Horde to battle against the Burning Legion.
Following the disastrous defeat of the Azerothian forces, the shaman adventurer met Thrall who revealed that the elders of the Earthen Ring called for an emergency council at the Heart of Azeroth. On their way to the Maelstrom, Stormcaller Mylra explained that their forces fell back all around the world, and that unless they find a way to turn this around, Azeroth would fall. During the meeting, Thrall claimed that the shaman must strike back, but he didn't know how, to which Nobundo responded they needed weapons capable of overcoming the Legion. The Broken farseer then explained to the shaman adventurer that there was no more faction there, as the few present were all that remained of the Earthen Ring. They had to struggle together or perish alone, while survivors continued to make their way here from the four corners of Azeroth.[24]
Worried that the demons would come for them, the shaman channeled lightning into the Maelstrom Pillar, an ancient safeguard which had sat useless for ten thousand years, in order to protect themselves. Unfortunately, the Legion had followed them here, and infernals started raining down from the skies under the leadership of the fel lord Geth'xun. After they destroyed the invaders, the Earthen Ring gathered around the Maelstrom Pillar and focused their energy into it, powering up a powerful discharge to throw Geth'xun into the Maelstrom, saving Thrall from a fatal blow.[24] In the aftermath, Thrall shared that his relationship with the elements had changed since the events of the war in Draenor, and that it was time for the shaman adventurer to carry the Earthen Ring forward as the leader they needed.[24] As conventional tactics would not work against the Legion, the order had to scour the world for legendary artifacts to use against the demonic invaders.[25]
When the shaman adventurer returned to the Heart of Azeroth, now equipped with powerful weapons, Stormcaller Mylra suggested they could use the Heart of Azeroth as a base of operations, and that the power of their artifact could unseal the hidden chambers. As the new Farseer of the Earthen Ring raised their weapon, they opened the way towards the hidden chambers for the order, with Immortal Stone Protectors guarding the entrance.[26] Nobundo then revealed that the artifacts housed a greater potential they could unlock through the ancient elemental altar overlooking the fury of the Maelstrom. From there, they could commune with Azeroth and imbue their artifact with even greater abilities. After doing so, Nobundo explained that the shaman were watching them carefully, as the Farseer had become a symbol of hope in the Ring's struggle against the Burning Legion.[27]
Through Advisor Sevel and the scouting map, the Earthen Ring indicated various hot-spots around the Broken Isles that required the Farseer's attention. After they chose their first point of attack, Nobundo opened up an astral portal to Dalaran to help their people move quickly between their base of operations and the Broken Isles.[28]
When the elemental ascendant Alexor joined the order, he beseeched the elements to Ascend selected shaman who had dedicated their lives to air, water, and fire, turning them into a powerful—if short-lived—force to deploy against the Burning Legion. Alexor noted that the ascension ritual was not to be requested lightly[29] and that the resulting ascended could not be commanded, only unleashed.
The Earthen Ring eventually attempted to recruit the elemental Lords and their minions to fight against the Legion. Starting with Neptulon, the Lord of Tides listened to the shaman's plea and insisted that the Elemental Lords do not work together. When the Earthen Ring said that they would stand with him, Neptulon recalled one time long ago when he and the other Lords did work together (likely referring to their war against the Old Gods). Musing that perhaps there was still hope, the Tidehunter sent his servant, Lord Hydraxis, to join the Earthen Ring at the Heart of Azeroth.[30]
In order to resurrect Thunderaan to replace the fallen Al'Akir, the Farseer gathered Thunderfury from Wray, who had been killed in Azsuna, and brought the blade to the Vortex Pinnacle.[31] Without a Windlord, Skywall had been in turmoil and so after arriving there the shaman empowered Thunderfury with the Heart of Skywall taken from Vortos, Duke of the East Winds. With the heart, Thunderaan was reborn from the power of Thunderfury and became the new Windlord.[32] Thunderaan promised that the armies of Skywall would stand shoulder to shoulder with the mortal races against the Legion,[33] and sent Consular Celestos to join the Earthen Ring at the Heart of Azeroth.[34]
When the shaman traveled to Deepholm, they found Therazane and her forces were under attack by the remaining Twilight's Hammer, which was rallying an army to conquer her realm. Therazane couldn't offer her aid until the threat had been dealt with.[35] Once the forces led by Zeryxia spirit were defeated,[36] Therazane pledged to fight alongside the Earthen Ring. She later sent Avalanchion to join the shamans at the Heart of Azeroth.[37]
Upon witnessing the civil war raging in the Firelands, the Farseer ordered his forces to scout the area and learn about the leaders of both sides. After learning that Smolderon was more willing to work with mortals over Pyroth, the Farseer decided to back Smolderon as the new Firelord, as he was more willing to work with mortals over Pyroth.[38] To that end, the Earthen Ring retrieved Emberscar, Brand of Damnation for Smolderon to wield, and then slew Pyroth. Now free to rule uncontested, Smolderon became the new Firelord and accepted the Earthen Ring's plea in exchange for their help.[39] He sent Baron Scaldius to represent him at the Heart of Azeroth and to aid the mortals against the invading demons.[40]
When the four Elemental Lords were united under the banner of the Earthen Ring, all of them traveled to the Heart of Azeroth to commemorate this occasion.
Legionfall
During the Assault on Broken Shore, Neptulon sent Champion Aquaclease to help the Earthen Ring on the Broken Shore.[41] On the other hand, Therazane joined the Farseer and Magatha Grimtotem to take vengeance on the demons twisting Azeroth's earth, while Smolderon disrupted the Legion's control over the elements and requested the Farseer to put an end to Barastagax the Flamecleaver, a demon who had somehow been able to use the power of the Firelands.[42]
Meanwhile, the Conclave of Wind rejected Thunderaan's rule, declaring that Prince Sarsarun was the true heir of Al'Akir. Seeking to regain their allegiance, Thunderaan tasked the Farseer with defeating the Conclave. Impressed with Thunderaan's champion, they subsequently swore their allegiance to Thunderaan who, as a gesture of appreciation, gifted the Farseer with an elemental mount: the Farseer's Raging Tempest.[43]
After deciding that the power of the Doomstone was too great, all four elemental lords agreed that the Earthen Ring should keep the artifact under their watch at the Heart of Azeroth.[44]
When Magni Bronzebeard called upon the champions of the Armies of Legionfall to draw the corruption out of the Sword of Sargeras, Rehgar Earthfury carried the Doomhammer if the adventurer was not a shaman, representing the Earthen Ring.[45]
Battle for Azeroth
| This section is a lore stub. |
During the Fourth War, the Earthen Ring joined the Cenarion Circle and Magni Bronzebeard in Silithus to help heal the wound left by Sargeras.
Their shaman at the Maelstrom were later attacked by Azerite elementals, with several members being injured.[46] After the war, the Earthen Ring continued to look after the Maelstrom.[47]
Shadows Rising
Following the armistice, the Earthen Ring shaman sensed a disturbance in the spirit world.[48] The orc Yukha was sent as a messenger from the Maelstrom to inform Thrall in Orgrimmar about it and later went to a meeting with the night elf leaders in Nordrassil who claimed to have similar information from their priestesses.[49]
Shadowlands
After the Fourth War, the Earthen Ring makes its appearance in the shaman section of the Training Hall in Stormwind and the Barracks in Orgrimmar, with Mulric Boldrock, Remaari, and Hretar Riverspeaker as shaman trainers.
Dragonflight
Years later, several members of the Earthen Ring traveled to the Waking Shores on the Dragon Isles to act as consultants for the Dragonscale Expedition, including Earthcaller Yevaa, Earthmender Govrum, Earthmender Narvra, Elementalist Taiyang, and Rimblat Earthshatter.
During the first Kosh'harg of Azeroth, Aggralan became a new far seer; appointed as such by the aging Drek'Thar. She later used her new position to invite the Dragonmaw orcs Artesh and Mallia into the Earthen Ring.[50]

Gaining reputation
Reputation can be gained by completing non-repeatable quests and by championing. There are no repeatable quests available for earning reputation with the Earthen Ring. The non-repeatable quests are located in Vashj'ir, Deepholm, and Twilight Highlands, and in some of the dungeon instances in those zones (see Earthen Ring quests). The Thrall quests added in 4.2 also give some reputation points.
In the RPG
The Earthen Ring is the shaman organization of Azeroth. Its main goal is to maintain the balance between the world and the elementals that dwell upon it. Talking to and dealing with the spirits of the elements, members of the Earthen Ring try to keep the spirits pacified as well as prevent them from raising havoc on Azeroth. Relatively little of the Earthen Ring's time is spent on hunting down rogue elementals and cultists. However, elemental activity is on the rise on Azeroth, so the Earthen Ring is getting busier. Some believe that the role of the organization in the preservation of the world has become essential.[52]
History in the RPG
Contrary to what some believe, the Earthen Ring was not created in order to fight the Twilight's Hammer; that particular conflict arose later. The group was actually formed to keep in check the elemental spirits. These spirits are by nature chaotic and destructive, but also capable of reasoning and clever actions.
The tauren have had shaman for quite a while now, but the Earthen Ring group itself is of more recent origin. People outside the group only noticed its existence about 150 years ago. The founding shaman believed that someone had to prevent the elemental forces from wreaking havoc; otherwise, the world would be in danger Thus, after several meetings and pacts, they founded what is now known as the Earthen Ring. With the passing years, the group, which was at first made exclusively of tauren, began to include a growing number of orcs. Each race now makes up about half the group.
While members of the Earthen Ring have not been overly active in the past, the events of the Third War weakened the dimensional barriers all around Azeroth and elemental activity is now on the rise. Indeed, the Earthen Ring has never been more necessary. Agents of the group work hard to pacify the elementals, thus ensuring they do not cause trouble in the world.[52]
Forsaken and the Horde
When the Forsaken first asked to join the Horde, Thrall would have refused if it were not for the Earthen Ring's urgings. According to Thrall, a council of sages, known as the Earthen Ring, asked him to allow the Forsaken into the Horde. They claimed that the Forsaken battle demons that Thrall’s own race is still fighting to this day. To turn his back on the Forsaken was to forget the horrors the orc race fought for generations.[53]
Notes and trivia
- The Earthen Ring have forgotten more about old gods, ancient legends and lore than most scholars will ever know.[54]
- When asked what the Earthen Ring meant to them, the Farseer replied among the followings:
- Guidance. Others shout, and fight, and abandon reason. But they listen. The spirits of the elements tell them much about the world--its love as well as its pain. Through that connection they are able to see many things to which others are blind, and guide their world forward safely.
- Balance. The Earthen Ring is dedicated to preserving the balance between all elements. When the elements are in balance, then old rivalries can grow distant, and the world can heal.
- Healing. Azeroth is still recovering from the events of the Cataclysmm and it needs time to heal. Just as the fury between the Horde and Alliance can be soothed, the spirits of the elements can be soothed. Until then, the Earthen Ring's work remains unfinished. [2]
- Mob and NPC members of the Earthen Ring usually have the title <The Earthen Ring>.
- Pyromancer Loregrain is a former member of the ring.
- The Earthen Ring had pure intentions towards the Forsaken and their entrance into the Horde, but there are some who wondered about the motivations of those whispering about it in the ears of the Elder Council.[55] This may refer to Magatha Grimtotem, who was one of the proponents of the alliance between the tauren and the Forsaken, and claimed that the tauren and their shamanistic ways could help the Forsaken find a path back to being human.[56]
- The server Earthen Ring US is named after the organization.
