“Led by the brave Scalecommander Cindrethresh, the Dark Talons were trained to be the secret weapon of the black dragonflight. Today, these dracthyr use their skills to turn the tide of any battle regardless of how outnumbered they are.”

— In-game faction description

The Dark Talons is a dracthyr weyrn. Where the enemies of the Earth-Warder tread, the Dark Talons shall harrow their skies, crush their will, and topple their leaders, denying the black dragonflight's enemies solace in walls and borders. For every talon in their ranks, they strike down ten of their foes from behind. This weyrn, currently under the authority of the Scalecommander Cindrethresh, trained to be the elite force that shall be feared by all enemies of the black dragonflight.[1] While the leader of the Dark Talons sees the Horde as little more than a collection of undisciplined misfits and outcasts, Scalecommander Cindretresh can't help but admire their honor and desire to be better people, gladly fighting alongside them.[2]

History

Ancient times

Scalecommander Cindrethresh, leader of the Dark Talons.

20,000 BDP, Scalecommander Cindrethresh was one of the dracthyr created by Neltharion, who would come to select them to serve as the leader of the Dark Talons. The Aspect of Earth fashioned the Forbidden Reach as a secret training ground for the dracthyr,[3] where at his command Cindrethresh would train the Dark Talons to be an elite force would be feared by all enemies of the black dragonflight.[1]

In a battle with Raszageth and the Primal Incarnates, the Oathbinder used by Neltharion to control the wills of the dracthyr was destroyed. Though Raszageth was sealed away, Neltharion could no longer directly control the dracthyr without the relic and so deemed them a risk. Cindrethresh and his people were thus subsequently ordered to the creches beneath the Forbidden Reach by Neltharion, where they were sealed away by Malygos in magical stasis and watched over by his blue dragonflight. They remained there for millenia, awakened from their long slumber only when the Primalists returned to break Raszageth free.[4]

After Raszageth's attack, this weyrn was forced to evacuate the Forbidden Reach with the help of Wrathion, Ebyssian, and Nozdormu. Guided by Ebyssian they headed to Orgrimmar to warn the other races of Azeroth and soon after joined the Horde, using their skills to turn the tide of any battle no matter how outnumbered they are.

Following Fyrakk's death, Cindrethresh revealed to Azurathel and Emberthal that they were originally skeptical whether the dracthyr would be a good fit for the Horde, only for the Dark Talons and the Horde to grow fond of one another.[5]
