“My fellow soldiers, the trials you have endured are proof that the Light shines bright within your hearts.”

Captain Fareeya[6]

The Grand Army of the Light (also called the Golden Army,[7] the Army of Light, the Light's Army,[8] or the Lightforged)[9] is a faction of enlightened races led by the naaru who rose against the Burning Legion. After the fall of Argus to Sargeras, the draenei's finest warriors followed the prime naaru Xe'ra across the cosmos in an eternal war to bring about the Legion's end. Since then, other survivors of the Burning Crusade have joined the ranks of the Lightforged.[1] Once they have been found worthy to become eternals protector of creation, their soldiers are empowered by the Holy Light and become immortal.[10]

After finally achieving victory on Argus, High Exarch Turalyon believed that it was time to take up arms alongside their brothers and sisters of the Alliance and pledged their forces to High King Anduin Wrynn.[5][9]

The Lightbound of alternate Draenor are similar to the Army of the Light.

History

“From the ashes of those ravaged worlds, survivors arose to stand against the demons. They became know as the Army of the Light.”

Xe'ra[7]
The Xenedar after its crash on Argus.

Around 13,000 years ago, when the naaru came to Prophet Velen and rescued the draenei from the fury of Kil'jaeden and the Burning Legion, they promised that the Exiled Ones would one day be part of a grand force.[11] In time, the survivors split into two different dimensional ships, the Genedar and the Xenedar, and went their separate ways. Among them, the draenei's finest warriors followed the Light Mother Xe'ra aboard the Xenedar to fight against the demonic Legion. The most committed to their long crusade would later undergo a ritual to become Lightforged, infusing their bodies with the very essence of the Holy Light of Creation.[12] This Army of the Light then battled the demonic army for thousands of years across the Great Dark Beyond and the Twisting Nether.[10]

For millennia, the Golden Army waged battles, skirmishes, and sabotage against the Burning Legion. They engaged in tactical guerilla strikes on the world of Argus using their warships. While outnumbered, they continued to fight with cunning, striking at points of opportunity quickly and moving on.[13] They all knew they might not survive their final assault on Argus.[14]

At some point, the dreadlord Lothraxion joined their cause and was infused with the Light. Since then, other survivors of the Burning Crusade have joined the ranks of the Lightforged.[1]

Around 200 years BDP, after the crash of the Genedar on Draenor, Prophet Velen and the Sha'tari tried to study D'ore and its kin, analyzing them to hopefully learn enough to communicate with the other naaru and draenei beyond Draenor.[15] They awaited the day when the Army would emerge for more than twenty millennia. One of the prophet's many visions was of a grand coalition, consisting of every race of the Alliance and Horde—all armored and armed in glowing weaponry and riding flying mounts of all kinds—along with innumerable dragons and naaru, all led by a human warrior of unclear identity clad in Light-imbued armor with a matching blade. The vision ended with the appearance of a vast and all-consuming shadow, and the army charging to meet it.[16] Ever since, Velen believes that a great war between light and shadow that will take place on Azeroth is fast approaching.[17][18]

The Prime Naaru Xe'ra also believed that the Void was a far greater foe than the Burning Legion, and prophesied that Illidan Stormrage was a hero destined to defeat it. A vision she granted to Illidan at the Black Temple showed him transformed into a champion of the Light, leading the "legions of Light" against gigantic Void creatures on a "terrible battlefield" strewn with "mountains of corpses".[19]

A Thousand Years of War

Turalyon and Alleria Windrunner meeting Xe'ra and the Army of the Light aboard the Xenedar.

Following the destruction of Draenor by Ner'zhul, High Commander Lothraxion journeyed to the shattered realm in order to recruit Turalyon and Alleria Windrunner into the Army of the Light. However, the Burning Legion had also dispatched an assassin that Alleria eventually managed to kill. Afterwards, Xe'ra appeared and told them that, though the Legion had failed to enter Azeroth during the Second War, they would soon succeed in doing so, and that the duo were fated to discover the "Emerald Star," which held the means to end the Legion forever. Turalyon and Alleria agreed with the necessity of Xe'ra's request and stepped through a portal to join the Army of Light.[20]

Aboard the Xenedar, Turalyon was eventually infused with the Light by Xe'ra, granting him immortality. He also joined their Council of Exarchs, and participated in many raids against the Legion throughout the cosmos. As time flowed differently within the Twisting Nether, the 20 years that had passed on Azeroth translated into more than 500 years for them. With Argus's defenses diminished by their invasion, Xe'ra recognized that there would be no better chance and sent Alleria and Turalyon to discover the truth of the Emerald Star. As they explored Argus, Alleria was struck by a vision sent by the titan world soul at the heart of Argus: it was the Emerald Star that was reviving slain demons of the Legion. When they returned to their transport, though, they found it surrounded by demons intent on capturing them. While their defeat appeared certain, Alleria called instead upon the Void, striking down the demons and opening a shadowy rift. Dismayed at what she had done, Alleria told him that she was not his enemy and asked him to return to the Xenedar, while she departed through another shadowy portal to join Locus-Walker.[21]

500 Nether-years later, Turalyon had become the High Exarch of the Army of the Light. Their thousand-year war on the Legion had accomplished much, such as freeing prisoners from fates worse than death. It had also delayed the demons' invasion of Azeroth by decades. And though the Golden Army had spent centuries opening rifts to make hit-and-run attacks on Argus, the Legion had finally enacted barrier generators to block their rifts. Following a failed assault to try and shut down the barriers, the assassin from Draenor--named Eradication and reborn from within the Nether--snuck aboard the Xenedar and ambushed Turalyon, stabbing him and Lothraxion with a dagger that cut them off from the Light and prepared to trap Turalyon's soul within a soulstone. They were ultimately saved by the unexpected arrival of Alleria and her mastery over the shadows. When Xe'ra arrived, Turalyon pleaded for mercy for Alleria, who still refused to renounce the Void, and was imprisoned instead.[22]

Right before the invasion of Outland began, Khadgar and Velen reached out to the naaru independently, both seeking aid against the dark forces amassing on Outland. The Army heard their pleas, but their battles with the Legion were costly and ceaseless, so they could not spare soldiers to protect Outland. Instead A'dal, M'uru, and O'ros volunteered to help and arrived with Tempest Keep.[23]

As their situation grew more dire, High Exarch Turalyon recorded a plea for help within Xe'ra's Light's Heart and ejected it, hoping their message would make it to the people of Azeroth.[24]

Legion

Legion-Logo-Small.png This section concerns content related to Legion.

Azeroth ... I pray that this, the final plea of the Army of the Light, has reached you intact. The thousand years' war has reached its peak, but the nightmare is far from over. This vessel represents our ultimate sacrifice. It must reach the prophet. He ... is the key. None of us asked for this burden, but it is what fate has deemed. Succeed, and the light may yet endure. Fail, and all worlds ... will burn.”

High Exarch Turalyon[25]

During the Burning Legion's third invasion of Azeroth, High Commander Lothraxion was held captive on the Legion world of Niskara, where he was found and freed by the Highlord of the Order of the Silver Hand. He informed the Highlord that the Legion planned to attack Netherlight Temple and left to get reinforcements.[26] Meanwhile, the Prime Naaru Xe'ra said the Army was losing the war against the Legion, and as such, sent the Light's Heart as a last resort for it to be handed to Prophet Velen. Xe'ra sought the "child of Light and Shadow", Illidan Stormrage, to bring the battle to an end.[7]

When Balnazzar and his forces attacked the Conclave and Silver Hand in Netherlight Temple, the nathrezim opened countless portals to summon in more demons and finish them off, until Lothraxion and the Army of the Light arrived and helped the Highlord and the High Priest to defeat Balnazzar.[27][28] Afterward, Lothraxion traveled to Light's Hope Chapel and joined the ranks of the Silver Hand.[29]

After Illidan Stormrage used the Sargerite Keystone to connect Argus with Azeroth, the Armies of Legionfall traveled to the demonic world aboard the Vindicaar. The Xenedar did as well, only for it to be immediately shot down by Chief Engineer Ishkar using the Burning Legion's cannons.[30] The resident Krokul saved Turalyon's life.[31] When Turalyon and the heroes made contact with the survivors of the crash, they were ambushed by the powerful demon Taraafash, whom Captain Fareeya struck from behind. After she briefed the High Exarch on their situation,[32] she worked with the champions in salvaging supplies,[33][34] fending off demon incursions,[35][36][37][38] to prevent the Legion from harvesting the souls of their fallen,[39] and later to defeat High Inquisitor Raalgar.[40]

Lothraxion, High commander of the Army of the Light.

When the champions of Azeroth crossed paths with Aggramar, they were only narrowly saved by Turalyon, who teleported the champions back to the Vindicaar. It became clear that the defenders of Azeroth and the Army of the Light were woefully unprepared to enter Antorus, but Velen knew of a power that could penetrate the Burning Throne's fortifications - the Crown of the Triumvirate.[41] Following the operations in Krokuun, Captain Fareeya reunited with her unit of elite troops aboard the Vindicaar, including Archmage Y'mera, Grand Vindicator Sorvos, Blademaster Telaamon, and Baraat the Longshot. As the search for the pieces of the Crown continued, Velen took Fareeya and her troops with him to the region of Eredath, seeking the Crest of Knowledge.[42] At the Conservatory of the Arcane, the group was ambushed by a massive force of demons, with Velen himself cut off from Fareeya and the main forces. Turalyon eventually arrived with reinforcements and rescued the Prophet, while Fareeya led an effort to rescue her soldiers cut off in the field.[43] The Crest of Knowledge would ultimately be secured, and the Crown of the Triumvirate restored.

After Xe'ra was restored, she bound Illidan in chains of light to force the prophecy she had seen upon him. Declaring that his destiny was his own, Illidan broke free and shattered the prime naaru with a burst of fel magic.[2] Xe'ra lay dead before the heroes who had spent millennia following her.[44] Following a short fight, tensions persisted between Turalyon and Illidan, but preparations for the coming assault on Antorus left little time for anything else. To lift their spirits, Velen told Turalyon that the Light did not die with Xe'ra, that it still shone within all of them, and that it was imperative that they press on as they still had a world to save. Furthermore, not willing to let Xe'ra's passing go to waste, Velen gathered the essence of Xe'ra's Light[45] and imbued it into Netherlight Crucible.[46]

In their initial engagements in the Antoran Wastes, the Illidari established the Veiled Den in the north, while Alleria led the Lightfirged's forces to establish Light's Purchase in the south. However, the two encampments came under heavy attack and were desperately awaiting reinforcements. The Vindicaar soon arrived and established Hope's Landing as their beachhead to reinforce the two fronts.[47]

During the final assault on Antorus, the Burning Throne, the Light's Judgment was used to force entry into some of the fortress's deeper reaches, while the Army of the Light held the line long enough for the heroes to eventually bring about the imprisonment of Sargeras in the Seat of the Pantheon, thereby ending the Burning Crusade.[48][49]

After their victory in the Argus Campaign, the Army of the Light traveled to Azeroth aboard their new home and base of operations, the Vindicaar, itself orbiting around Azeroth, and reunited with the other draenei. Foreseeing the upcoming war between the Alliance and the Horde,[50] the Lightforged and Captain Fareeya decided to stand alongside their brothers and sisters of the Alliance, even accepting new recruits from their Exodar kin, such as T'paartos. The Lightforged draenei and Turalyon thus pledged to defend the Alliance[9] and seek to spread the Light's justice across the land.[51] With Vindicator Minkey as their emissary,[52] some Lightforged Representatives traveled to the Stormwind Embassy, while several soldier could be found training or exploring Ironforge and Stormwind City.[53] Unlike the void elves, the Lightforged draenei were well received by the priests and paladins at the Cathedral of Light.

Battle for Azeroth

BattleForAzeroth-Logo-Small.png This section concerns content related to Battle for Azeroth.

The Army of the Light subsequently participated in the Fourth War, sending the Purified along with some of their technology to protect civilians in Drustvar. Blademaster Telaamon later willingly sacrificed his life to help the Alliance win the Battle of Dazar'alor, the latter arguing that if the Horde under Sylvanas Windrunner was not stopped, Azeroth would eventually suffer the same fate as Argus.[54] Due to the threat of Vindicator Caeduum and his Lightforged troops, Rokhan, Master Gadrin, and Madam Konawla used a ritual to imbue Horde adventurers with the ancient powers of trolls to repel them.[55]

At some point, Vigilant Quoram was relocated to the Vindicaar, apparently being given a "new prime directive" related to the Lightforged draenei and the Army of the Light after watching over the Conservatory of the Arcane was no longer deemed an effective use of his time.[56]

High Exarch Turalyon was one of the Alliance commanders during the Battle for Stromgarde. His forces consisted of a mix of forces from the Army of the Light and the Order of the Silver Hand.

The Lightforged also joined the ranks of the 7th Legion, composed of the Alliance's most seasoned veteran fighters, and fought in the Faction Assaults and during the battle at the Gates of Orgrimmar.[57]

During the Brawl: Comp Stomp in Arathi Basin, the Lightforged draenei Priestess Leysha, Justicar Arcalus, Talvar the Luminous, and Huntress Zmora encountered the Horde adventurers.

As the representative of the Army of the Light, Captain Fareeya and the Alliance leaders met at the Stormwind Embassy after the end of the war, where they discussed the armistice.[58]

Shadows Rising

During their hunt for Sylvanas Windrunner, Alleria and Turalyon were assisted by Lieutenant Senn and the void elf Celosel Nightgiver, who reported on the position of Horde refugees in Arathi Highlands.[59]

Under the Lich King Bolvar Fordragon's command, the Four Horsemen acquired fallen champions through the battlefields and graveyards of Azeroth,[60] including Lightforged draenei.[61]

Dragonflight

Even after the war against the Primalists, the Army of the Light continued to fight the Burning Legion on Argus, and the Penitents have provided them aid.[62] Various members of the Army attended the Tishamaat celebrations in the Exodar, among them Captain Fareeya expressed that though despite all the Lightforged had gained in their fight against the Legion, they had lost so much more. While reconnecting with the non-Lightforged draenei would be difficult, many of the Lightforged still wanted to do so.[63]

The War Within

TheWarWithin-Petopia-Logo.png This section concerns content related to The War Within.

Following the destruction of Dalaran, forces of the Army of the Light accompanied Turalyon and the Alliance forces that traveled to the Isle of Dorn to aid in the war against Xal'atath.[64] Vindicator Jaelaana was notably responsible for arming the earthen as both factions began to train them to fight.[65] Lightforged Vindicators and Shining Warframes were later seen amongst the troops that arrived to aid the Arathi when the nerubians of Azj-Kahet launched an all-out assault on Hallowfall.[66]

Technology and equipment

See also: Artificer
Warframe of the Army of the Light.

The Army of the Light count Lightforged artificers among its ranks. Their technology is powered by argunite,[33] which was also used by the ancient eredar of Argus.[67]

The mechanized armor suits named warframes are the culmination of many years of research.[68] They are truly fearsome instruments of war, capable of dealing and withstanding much damage. They are even capable of flight.[69] The Judgment Cores, which are a critical component of the warframes, are said to be the crowning achievement of the Army of the Light's artificers.[70] Other artificer creations include Lightforged beacons used for teleportation, Lightforged shield generators that can be used to guard a small area, and bunkers used as drop pods, escape pods, and teleporters. The Lightforged Batteries are siege weapons and can also be used against aerial units. The Light's Judgment, the main canon of the Xenedar and later the Vindicaar, is also possibly an artificer creation.

The Lightforged's armors are made of empyrium, described as "the finest material on Argus", which is honed to protect their vindicators from the Legion's fel magic.[71] Master Blacksmith Khamir notably create breastplates and other pieces from this metal aboard the Vindicaar.[72] With arkonite and holy magic, Zuronar created a "flashbang" for his work as a rogue.[73]

The Forge of Aeons is an important place to the Army of the Light. It is here that their members must face their inner turmoil in order to pass the tests and become Lightforged.[6]

The elekk mounts were introduced to them by Alleria and Turalyon,[74] who had spent time on the elekk homeworld, Draenor. The Army also tried to save some of Argus' native species.[75]

Legends say that the Lightbound Runestones are pieces of pylons that the Army used to transport their troops to distant worlds.[76]

Dimensional ships

The empowered Vindicaar.

Dimensional ships are vessels created and operated by the naaru that can travel between worlds and dimensions, traversing the Twisting Nether just as normal ships traverse the air and sea, and warp time itself.[77] They are described as warships used by the Army of the Light to engage the Burning Legion in tactical guerilla strikes on Argus for centuries.[13]

Notes and trivia

  •  [Sunglow] is favored by Army of the Light troops as a morale booster.
  • Few draenei among the army wield "true magic" anymore after seeing what tempted their brethren.[79]
  • The Army of the Light was told about Tempest Keep by Xe'ra, but none have ever seen it themselves.[40]
  • Xe'ra never told the Army that naaru can fall to the Void, as she did not want them to know about that.[80]
  • Before the Army's formal introduction in patch 7.2, draenei members of the Army of the Light sent aboard the Aurobos were simply shown as heavily armored draenei.[27]
  • Lightforged draenei children use the normal draenei child model.[81]
    • The Caretaker for these children refers to herself as part of the same group as the Lightforged but uses a normal draenei model, implying that not all Army draenei are Lightforged.
  • Archmage Y'mera says "Give me a hundred Lightforged. Barring that, a thousand regular troops", which is a reference to the Warhammer 40,000 Space Marines. The Lightforged also make use of drop pod-style bunkers.
  • At BlizzCon 2011, Chris Metzen discussed various high-concept ideas he had about the cosmology of Warcraft, many of which would later be realized in Legion. One of these ideas was that of a "shining fleet of draenei" somewhere in the cosmos which Velen didn't know about,[82] which largely matches Legion's depiction of the Army of the Light.
  • As with Velen, the Army of the Light may be a reference to a similar faction called "The Army of Light" from the sci-fi television series Babylon 5. Both factions were prophesied by a higher race of beings of light (naaru/Vorlons) to lead the battle against the shadow. Both factions are led by a human (Turalyon/John Sheridan), and both factions have a spaceship (the Xenedar/Babylon 5) serving as their headquarters.

Speculation

Questionmark-medium.png
This article or section includes speculation, observations or opinions possibly supported by lore or by Blizzard officials. It should not be taken as representing official lore.
  • In a distant future, High King Anduin Wrynn and Prophet Velen are seen preparing for a final battle,[83] presumably as a part of the Army.
  • In the novel Beyond the Dark Portal a naaru[84] appeared to Turalyon and encouraged him to proceed with his decision to stop the Horde from finding new worlds to conquer. It is possible that the naaru was Xe'ra and that she knew that one day Turalyon would join the Golden Army, perhaps even inciting him to do so.
