The Bonespeakers (also known as the mystic vrykul[1] or the mystics[2]) are a group of vrykul mystics that are supposed to care for the bodies of the vrykul honored dead. They are religious zealots and masters of rune magics.[1] Many of them have a "Shattered Rune" ability.
History
The Bonespeakers were responsible for the burial of many vrykul such as Blood-Thane Lucard, the Old Kings, and many ancestors.[3]
Many ages ago, the vrykul sage Vydhar was transformed, with the help of the Highmountain tauren, into a tree, as a means for his wisdom to be made eternal. Per the tree sage, his people forgot many of the old vows, except for Vydhar, who vowed to always remember the Highmountain tauren for their help in his transformation.[4]
During the third invasion of the Burning Legion, the Bonspeakers were twisted and sided with God-King Skovald, seeking to use their control over the dead to help him invade the Halls of Valor.[5] Their actions were considered as heresies by Shieldmaiden Iounn of the Valkyra.
The Bonespeakers twisted the woods around Vydhar, severely weakening the tree sage by severing his connection to the runestones in the woods.[6] After a hero rescued him from the Bonespeakers,[7] Vydhar agreed to help them speak to the spirits of ancient vrykul rulers if they could gather an aromatic to burn, and to leave them an offering.[8][9][10] He then pointed the hero to the ancient kings, but not before asking them to lay the spirits of disturbed vrykul ancestors to rest for their own judgment.[11]
Meanwhile, the Bonespeakers stole the bones of Ashildir, queen of the Valkyra, for the God-King in an attempt to bind her with the dark energy of Helheim. By this act, they entered directly into a war with the Valkyra. Many Bonespeakers were slain for their crimes and the ritual to bind Ashildir was prevented from being completed.[12][13]
Finally, Runeseer Faljar, the leader of the Bonespeakers, was confronted in Haustvald.[14] He survived and still had a say in who rules the Tideskorn, one of the options being himself, though he was defeated in combat by Sigryn to prove herself worthy of the Tideskorn throne; after which he yielded and declared that he and the Bonespeakers would not interfere with her claims to the throne.[15]
