The Tillers (short for the Tiller's Union or Tillers Union)[1] are a group of pandaren farmers who harvest and produce crops to feed their people. They were seemingly founded by a man only referred to as "the Tiller".[2]
Faction description
The Tillers are peaceful and productive pandaren, working with the land to feed the massive appetites of their people.
Player-operated farm
- Main article: Sunsong Ranch
The Tillers have a quest chain that leads to the farming mini-game. By becoming a business partners with Farmer Yoon at Sunsong Ranch, who has plenty of knowledge but lacking in physical experience, the player can earn the right to farm the ranch, through phasing, to plant seeds for cooking ingredients. Upon reaching Revered (Note that level 90 is not required), you may also plant special seeds that produce profession materials. All faction increases and dailies with the Tillers revolve around using the farm and improving it, or helping out your new neighbors. Unlocking Sunsong Ranch will also unlock the Tillers Shrine, another way to check your standing with individual Tillers, and a visual indicator of how many votes you've gotten for the two of you to join the Tillers.
Once you have unlocked four patches of soil with Farmer Yoon's quests, you can plant whatever seeds you can buy, and grow a plant that will become Ripe when daily quests reset. At level 90, harvesting a plant gives a small amount of reputation. For Vegetables, unless the next day is a bountiful time for a certain crop (you can pay Jogu the Drunk to see what that will be), or your plant becomes big and Plump, you will get five ingredients from one seed. A bountiful day will give you seven instead, and a Plump crop will give you three extra (Note you can have a plump bountiful crop). Also, harvesting vegetable crops have a 50% chance of producing 1-3 seeds of that crop, and there is a rare chance to get a Tiller gift (see Known members further down). There is also the chance that your seed will immediately grow into a Bursting plant, which can be harvested right away and can give extra if it's currently a bountiful day for that crop (As predicted the day before).
Naturally, budding crops need care, whether from pests (big or small), weeds, or just making sure that the plant is healthy. As Yoon will show you, his grandpa's
[Vintage Bug Sprayer] and
[Rusty Watering Can] can assist you with some of this. Other solutions will require a more hands-on approach, something an experienced adventurer is more than equipped to deal with. If you're not sure what to do about a status problem, Yoon can be asked for specific advice. With the problem out of the way, one only needs to wait until their Growing crop is ready for harvesting. However, if you plant something that you later want to get rid of for whatever reason, the
[Dented Shovel] can help you dig up the Growing plant and have that spot ready for another crop.
Reaching different levels of reputation with the Tillers will unlock a short questline to expand your farm, and a local NPC will then spend 15 minutes to upgrade the ranch by clearing another quarter section of the field. This clearing requires you to be online for it to progress. Each upgrade will give you four more patches of soil to farm. Yoon will mail you a letter to remind you that an upgrade is available, along with a
[Basic Seed Pack].
The first opportunity to do so will be upon reaching Honored, which Gai Lan does by clearing weeds with his weed sprayer. The second is at Revered, at which Fish Fellreed will repair the Broken Wagon (and unlock the story of how it got that way), which also clears the weeds around it, and sets it beside the road. The third is at Exalted, at which Haohan Mudclaw will bring over his mushan beast Thunder to repeatedly ram the Mossy Boulder until it's destroyed.
The first and second upgrades to the farm have no special requirements beyond reputation and level 90. The third upgrade to the farm requires that Yoon and you be members of the Tillers, which requires you to have gotten all 5 votes.
When each of the three quarter sections of the field is cleared of certain obstacles, kits can be bought from Gina Mudclaw to make working the farm faster. By clearing the weeds, then fixing the Broken Wagon, and then removing the Mossy Boulder, you will unlock an irrigation kit, an anti-pest system, and a plow, respectively.

Daily quests
Tillers daily quests are always offered from Halfhill Market and Sunsong Ranch. Five quests every day are varieties of adventuring task, while one to four quests can be completed by farming specific crops at the ranch.
Adventuring dailies
Most non-farming quests send players to accomplish tasks around or against either the Kunzen Hozen on the Skyrange, or the Springtail virmen on Springtail Crag. The focus area is always one or the other, never a mix of both. Some quests are done in the Heartland on the way to the main questing area, and a few take place in Halfhill itself. These quests are offered by:
- Farmer Yoon. This just grants Tillers reputation.
- Two of the ten Tillers NPCs with individual reputations, rotating who offers the quest each day. Both quest givers will visit the market that day, other than Gina and Jogu who are there full-time already. Each member always offers the same quest on their days. These quests grant individual reputation with them in addition to Tillers faction rep.
- Andi the young pandaren, who recommends a gift for one of the two Tillers quest givers. This grants individual and Tillers reputation also, benefitting the relationship with the giftee.
- One of the six Ironpaw family master chefs. This is actually a cooking quest and will not grant any reputation, but is always done in the same quest area as the Tillers that day. It grants an
[Ironpaw Token] for cooking rewards, and +1 skill in cooking, although it does not increase mastery in the six Pandaren Ways of cooking.
The quest selection is always done such that one quest always requires slaying multiple hozen or virmen, up to two are done in the Heartland (on the way to the enemy area) or Halfhill, and the others focus on other objectives in the enemy area, sometimes including a "boss" to be killed. It varies by day which quest giver demands which type of objective.
Note that there are very few quests and combinations available on "virmen days" — the one applicable quest from each quest giver will be chosen, including Tina as a Tillers quest giver of the day; a random second Tillers member who offers a Halfhill/Heartland quest will be visiting; Andi has a 50/50 of offering them or Tina a gift. On "hozen days" there are many more possible combinations.
Farming dailies
There are two additional series of daily quests done by planting crops at Sunsong Ranch. None of the farming quests reward
[Valor Points], but they do improve various reputations.
Before reaching Exalted reputation with the Tillers and completing
[15-35] Inherit the Earth, Farmer Yoon offers a quest to plant just one of a randomly chosen crop. The crop is always one of the 10 standard plants, and is not related to the crop forecast Jogu the Drunk might provide. Simply planting a single seed of the correct type will satisfy Yoon, earning 350 Tillers reputation.
[15-35 Daily] A Pumpkin-y Perfume
[15-35 Daily] It's Melon Time
[15-35 Daily] Red Blossom Leeks, You Make the Croc-in' World Go Down
[15-35 Daily] Squash Those Foul Odors
[15-35 Daily] That Dangling Carrot
[15-35 Daily] The Cabbage Test
[15-35 Daily] The Pink Turnip Challenge
[15-35 Daily] The White Turnip Treatment
[15-35 Daily] Which Berries? Witchberries.
[15-35 Daily] Why Not Scallions?
After reaching the Exalted milestones, Yoon moves to Halfhill Market and replaces his earlier quests with written work orders for other Pandarian factions, posted on a bulletin board at the ranch. These require planting 8 of a specific crop; with 16 plots at the ranch, two can be done per day. These are each followed by a "part II" quest to harvest them and deliver the produce, to be completed the next day. Completing any pair gives 400 reputation with the faction, which receives the food. (Only a set amount of food is needed, so bonus crop yields can be kept for extra profit.)
[15-35] Work Order: The August Celestials I (and II) — Requires
[Striped Melons]
[15-35] Work Order: Golden Lotus I (and II) — Requires
[White Turnips]
[15-35] Work Order: The Klaxxi I (and II) — Requires
[Mogu Pumpkins]
[15-35] Work Order: Shado-Pan I (and II) — Requires
[Green Cabbage]
[15-35] Work Order: Operation: Shieldwall I (and II) — Requires

[15-35] Work Order: Dominance Offensive I (and II) — Requires
[Red Blossom Leeks]
[15-35] Work Order: Sunreaver Onslaught I (and II) — Requires
[Scallions]
Factions the character has not unlocked by doing their introductory quests are unavailable. Otherwise, all quests are offered each day, and they always require the same produce.
Known members
All the farm and ranch owners and most farm workers in the Heartland are Tillers, as are those who work closely with them as administrators and merchants in Halfhill. Sho has perhaps the most unusual role among the Tillers, protecting them from threats in the hills. Notably, the Ironpaw family of chefs at Halfhill are not Tillers (despite the membership's strong interest in fine Pandaren cooking), nor are those who run the outlying farms to the east, nor the farmers of Stoneplow to the west.
Many members of the Tillers track their individual friendliness level with adventurers, shown on their gossip windows. Such members have a preferred gift item and food that will increase the adventurer's standing with them. The gifts can be found randomly in Dark Soil piles all over the Heartland (as well as various other areas across Pandaria) and occasionally when harvesting crops at Sunsong Ranch, while their food can be created with Cooking.
Conspicuously absent from the list of cooking specializations above is
[Way of the Brew]. However, Jogu offers various quests requiring the Way of the Brew as you progress through his reputation.
NPC locations
Jogu the Drunk and Gina Mudclaw stay at Halfhill Market full-time, while the others visit two at a time, rotating each day. When not visiting the market, they can be found at their farms or posts, shown on this map:
Council
The Tillers Union is controlled by five council members, each with their own duties and responsibilities. Haohan Mudclaw heads the council, but most major decisions are voted on. The council members are:
It would appear that controlling council members may appoint a replacement for themselves at their own discretion,[3] though likely only members of the Tillers Union may be considered for the job.
Minor members
Other NPCS are marked as Tillers but do not play a role in the quests, or presumably in Tillers governance.
Reputation ranks
Upon reaching Honored with the Tillers, you get mail from Farmer Yoon, containing
[Basic Seed Pack]:
Hey <name>!
You've been getting on so well at the farm that I wanted to tell you some good news.
If you haven't stopped by the farm recently, you should pay me a visit. I think we're ready to finally clear those weeds from my field.
I also picked up these seeds at Halfhill Market. I hope you like them!
Farmer Yoon
Upon reaching Revered, you get mail from Farmer Yoon, containing
[Basic Seed Pack]:
Hey hey, <name>!
The farm's growing real big, thanks to you. I've been getting lots of compliments from the folks in town and taking all the credit. Just kidding! They know how hard you've been working.
If you haven't stopped by recently, come on down to the ranch! I think we should finally fix that broken wagon that's taking up all that room on my farm! Maybe once it's gone we can get another field for planting.
I thought these seeds might come in handy, too.
Farmer Yoon
Upon reaching Exalted, you get mail from Farmer Yoon, containing
[Basic Seed Pack]:
Wow, <name>!
I can't believe we did it! We are real, actual members of The Tillers! I could never have done it without you. You should feel real proud!
Well, I couldn't get along without you anymore, so you should consider Sunsong Ranch yours just as much as it's mine. Glad to have you on the farm, partner!
Anyways, it's high time we clear out that big boulder that's been blocking our last field. Also, Gina keeps talking my ear off about this new tool she'll sell me, but only after we get that boulder out.
Oh, and I'm sending you some seeds I picked up at the market. Come back soon and plant them!
Your friend, Farmer Yoon
Individual reputation
In addition to the main Tillers reputation, player characters have friendship reputation with each major Tillers NPC. There are six levels of Friendship reputation, each requiring 8400 rep to progress through:
- Stranger
- Acquaintance (equivalent to Pal in later expansions)
- Buddy
- Friend
- Good Friend
- Best Friend
Each Tillers member offers an "A Dish for <Member>" daily quest to turn in five of their favorite food for a set repututation gain, but only if the required food is already in a character's bags. Gift items (which binds on pickup) can be given at any time to any of them, but giving preferred gifts rewards more reputation. Individual friendship is also improved through general Tillers daily quests: two members per day rotate through Halfhill Market to offer one quest each that grants reputation with themselves, while Andi offers a third to get a gift for one of the two, granting reputation with the giftee; all three grant overall Tillers reputation as well.
| Food | Preferred gift | Other gift | Personal daily quest | Andi's gift | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Gain | |||||
| +1800 | +900 | +540 | +2000 | +1400 |
To give all ten members of the Tillers their preferred meal each day (see the members list above for the foods themselves), the following ingredients are required, ordered by quantity:
- 35x
[Juicycrunch Carrot] - 25x
[Scallions] - 25x
[Striped Melon] - 10x
[Jade Lungfish] - 10x
[Krasarang Paddlefish] - 10x
[Wildfowl Breast] - 5x
[Emperor Salmon] - 5x
[Giant Mantis Shrimp] - 5x
[Raw Tiger Steak] - 5x
[Raw Turtle Meat] - 5x
[Reef Octopus]
Chee Chee, Ella, and Sho each have short, personal questlines to do once you become Buddies, which advance when you reach higher levels of friendship. Gina has a similar setup, but her quests start from items dropped from virmen and hozen for Tillers dailies, dropping immediately once the correct reputation is reached. Jogu is similar except his questline starts at Acquaintance and its latter quests can be completed in parallel with leveling the Way of the Brew cooking skill. Fish Fellreed is also involved with a short quest chain, but it starts from an
[Old Map] that only drops after becoming Best Friends.
Upon reaching Best Friend with any NPC, players can no longer hand in food or gift items to them, as there would be no point. They will send their new best friend a nice letter and gift in the mail, and provide farm animals (cosmetic additions) or features for Sunsong Ranch. The player can also ask them to stay at the ranch, in which case they will no longer appear at their old location (until replaced by another guest); they still visit the market when it is one of their days to offer their daily quest.

Becoming Best Friends with all ten Tillers awards the
[Friends on the Farm] achievement and allows the
[Old Map] to drop. It also causes the special profession-related crop seeds (those sold by Merchant Greenfield at Revered with the Tillers) to randomly be harvested as bonus items from Sunsong Ranch farming rather than the individual Tillers' gift items, and prevents Dark Soil from being looted anymore.
