The Scarlet renegades, led by Joseph the Awakened, are rebels of the Scarlet Crusade.[1] They sought to reform the order after having realized the corruption within. The Renegades sought redemption after the actions of the Crusade and have thus aligned themselves with the Alliance adventurers to seize control of the organization.[2][3] After the Scarlet Monastery's quest chain, the renegades' coup d'état was a success[4] but their leader Joseph had unfortunately fallen into insanity.[5]

Seeing how the Crusaders have rebuilt, upgraded the monastery, and are still being led by High Inquisitor Whitemane during Mists of Pandaria, it is probable that Joseph's forces weren't strong enough to eliminate the corruption and fell before the Scarlet Crusade during the coup attempt.
