The Roughnecks are a human group in Tiragarde Sound. They provide all gryphon mounts for Kul Tiras.[1] They are led by Boss Tak, a Wildhammer dwarf of the Doyle clan from the Twilight Highlands, who taught them how to tame and ride gryphons instead of hunting them for meat and pelts.[2]

They were apparently also taught about preserving the local wild population that their gryphons are captured from. This includes driving off saurolisks if they overrun the nests, as the residents could make new roosts elsewhere that's inconvenient for the Roughnecks. They also construct new nests for displaced gryphons and place eggs from abandoned nests within them, as females will likely choose to adopt the eggs.[3]

They are based in the Roughneck Camp. Timberfell Outpost was once theirs until the roughnecks stationed there were killed by the Horde and claimed as theirs.[4]

The Roughnecks apparently have some camping spots up at the Waning Glacier.[5] While checking up on one of them, Boss Tak discovers the occupants had been slaughtered by the wendigo Whompus, and has the adventurer help him avenge their deaths.

Roughneck whittlers prove their skill year after year in the annual Norwington festival.[6]

  • There seems to be a habit among them to refer to those they see as soft (i.e. not a Roughneck) [7] or those that have not yet proven themselves[8] to them as "house cat".
