Harrison Jones is human archaeologist and explorer of the Explorers' League, much like his namesake. Initially a simple joke character, Jones has become a recurring character with added significance, particularly during the Uldum storyline. His companions often include Adarrah, Samir, and Budd Nedreck.
Biography
Season of Discovery
Four years after the Third War, Harrison caught wind of a rumor that some mage was in search of something in the crypts beneath Karazhan. The rumor said that they wanted to reassemble the legendary Atiesh, Greatstaff of the Guardian. Wanting to get the staff back before an adventurer could pilfer it and dispose of it without knowing its true value, Harrison hired Sergeant Bly's party for an expedition into the crypts after having met them some times earlier in Tanaris. Most of them died entering the dungeon, while Jones himself got injured and captured by the Deadwind ogres.[3]
The Burning Crusade
By the time of the invasion of Outland, Harrison could be found in Zul'Aman. Upon entering the Amani capital, the inner gate into the city was shut; speaking to Jones would cause him to don his hat, shout out that he studied the site intending to have its treasures put in a museum, and run over to the gong near the door. He and five adventurers needed to hit the gong until it stopped moving. Shortly thereafter, the gates would open, and suddenly Amani trolls ambushed him.
Wrath of the Lich King
Having survived the troll ambush, Harrison traveled to Northrend during the war against the Lich King. He could be found captured in the crypt of the Drakil'jin Ruins in the eastern Grizzly Hills. Freed from his cage by the adventurer, he decided to leave the place and asked them if they wanted to follow him. In the crypt, he freed Adarrah and defeated the giant cobra Tecahuna after summoning it by hitting a gong. Once Harrison saved the adventurer, Jones disappeared from sight.[4]
Cataclysm
After the Cataclysm, Harrison appeared in the Royal Library of the Stormwind Keep as the city's archaeology trainer, teaching adventurers and his students.
One day, Explorer Mowi informed him about the Masters' Gate which Deathwing was trying to use as a weapon.[5] Before deciding to go to Uldum, he sent an Alliance soldier to meet up with Adarrah.[6]
Shortly after this, Harrison traveled to Uldum on a mule and was encountered at Khartut's Tomb, searching for the Coffer of Promise.[7] Moments before arming some explosives, pygmy shot at Harrison's mule which forced the adventurer to hit a brazier and light the explosive. Terrified, Harrison and the adventurer jumped into two nearby chests.[8] After crushing into another pygmy,[9] they ended up at the Obelisk of the Stars.[10] To their luck, they discovered a titan tablet which told him that the obelisk was what kept the land hidden.[11] He also discovered that the way to recharge it was by using the Shaft of the Stars.[12] Going inside the Chamber of the Stars, he learned that the statues housed four orbs, and he decided to topple them.[13]
Harrison then informed the adventurer to meet him in Ramkahen for the next step of his plan.[14] They entered the Chamber of the Sun and activated it,[15][16] then took flight on a plane.[17] When Commander Schnottz told everything about his plan to the adventurer, Harrison came into the scene and told Schnottz to beat.[18] At the Obelisk of the Moon, Schnottz's men have already treaded into the ruins to defeat the Guardian that protected it but ultimately failed when the adventurer bombed the camp and killed the remaining men.[19] Harrison arrived at the ruins and activated the obelisk and then, he and the adventurer ran towards the Temple of Uldum. Unfortunately, Schnottz had already won and had found the treasure before they even got there. Surrounded by black dragons, Harrison and the adventurer had been put in an impossible situation to get out of, until suddenly, the chest spoke. Someone was in there and used an orb of light to obliterate the black dragons and Schnottz himself.[2]
Brann Bronzebeard's "two steps ahead of everyone as usual" struck again, relieving Jones and the adventurer. Harrison then told the adventurer to light up his signal flares to be brought to the Coffer of Promise.[20]
Mists of Pandaria
Jones can be briefly seen in the Silvershard Mines on a mine track heading north.
Warlords of Draenor
During the war in Draenor, Jones was mentioned in passing by a Stormshield Guard in Ashran as to be looking for an artifact but with no luck. Examiner Rahm Flameheart and Illandria Belore of the Reliquary also discussed Harrison's mission, hoping to seize the artifact before he did. He was eventually found on the main island excavating its ruins in Stormshield Stronghold,[21] and was later targeted by the Horde.[22]
Later, Jones appeared in the adventurers' garrisons to aid them in recovering relics across alternate Draenor. He became a follower for both Alliance and Horde commanders when his missions were complete.[23]
Battle for Azeroth
During the Assault in Uldum, he could be found at the Maker's Ascent in Uldum, along with several other members of the Explorers' League.
The War Within
He can be seen with Historian Gnai Woodlund and Historian Cortagosa outside the Caverns of Time in Tanaris during the Bronze Celebration.

Quotes
Zul'Aman
- Strange... these mosaics don't resemble any known troll tradition.
- Gossip
A word to the wise, stranger, go back to wherever you're from.
This is no place for lighthearted adventurers. It'll chew up the likes of you and spit out your bones.
Thanks for the concern, but we intend to explore Zul'Aman.
- Suit yourself. At least five of you must assist me if we're to get inside. Follow me...
- According to my calculations, if enough of us bang the gong at once the seal on these doors will break and we can enter.
- I've researched this site extensively and I won't allow any dim-witted treasure hunters to swoop in and steal what belongs in a museum. I'll lead this charge.
- Cold feet, I assume. Probably better this way - nothing but death in there for the likes of you....
- In fact, it would be best if you just stay here. You'd only get in my way....
- These fires have been burning steadily for years. Unusual dedication for trolls.
Grizzly Hills
- Gossip
You'd better get outta here unless you want to find yourself in one of these cages....
Stormwind City
- Gossip
Are you here to train in Archaeology?
Train me.
- Dialogue
- On approach, Janric Moller, Lana Dubing, and Darnella Winford stand in a semi-circle in front of Jones.
- Archaeology is the search for fact. Not truth.
- If it's truth you're interested in, Cuddy Nordlinger's Philosophy class is right down the hall.
- Janric Moller laughs.
- Lana Dubing laughs.
- Darnella Winford laughs.
- So forget any ideas you've got about lost cities, exotic travel, and digging up the world.
- Seventy percent of all archaeology is done in the library. Research. Reading.
- We cannot afford to take mythology at face value.
- Lana Dubing flutters her eyelashes at Harrison Jones.
- Ahem! Well... ah, next week:"Tanaris." Starting with the excavation of Broken Pillar by Marvon Rivetseeker in Year 22.
- I will be here doing research if anybody's got any problems for the next hour and a half.
- The students wave goodbye and leave the library.

- How about you don't go runnin' off with my explosives this time, okay?
- Obelisk of the Stars
I've been meaning to investigate this site.
No time like the present!
- Obelisk of the Sun
Dad always told me the big fellas hit hard, but that they're slow...

We'll have to do that again sometime!
Well, I'm off to do some more research. I'll catch up to you when I'm ready.

Imagine, the bronze dragons could show you what happened.
I thought it was the search for answers.

In other media

Harrison Jones is a rare card in the Tomb of the Forgotten deck of Trading Card Game. He is also depicted in the art of Tailgunner! (Tomb of the Forgotten).
He appears as a legendary card in Hearthstone. His flavor text reads:"That belongs in the Hall of Explorers!"
- His hat appears as a rare Hunter spell in the League of Explorers adventure. The flavor text reads:"Harrison Jones was disappointed that he didn't get to be part of the League of Explorers, but his hat did."
Jones makes cameo appearances in Heroes of the Storm on the Sky Temple and Tomb of the Spider Queen battlegrounds.
Notes and trivia
- He wrote
[Is it a Rock? How to Identify Relics].
- Sullah is his old friend and refers to him as Jonesy.[24]
- He has a well documented fear of rats.[25]
- Gazmolf Futzwangler appears to not be fond of Harrison.[26]
- His initial appearance in TBC included a mustache, but the model went unused.
- He was set to appear in Vashj'ir, but those plans were scrapped during the Cataclysm beta. One of his models there was a skeleton.
- During early Dragonflight beta, he was found at the Serene Dreams Spa in Thaldraszus. He was later replaced by Riko.
- Although clearly an Alliance member, he also becomes a follower for Horde players in patch 6.1.0, to whom he offers the same quests and services as the Alliance. This is strange on a few levels, as Jones is one of the Horde's killable antagonists on Ashran, his mission there was a large catalyst of the breakout of hostilities and is an enemy of the Horde's own archaeology faction, the Reliquary. It was believed that the Reliquary's leader, Tae'thelan Bloodwatcher would play Harrison's 6.1 role for the Horde,[27] but for whatever reason this did not go ahead. He has an invisible Follower recruiting spell:
Follower Contract: Harrison Jones
- His name is a reference to actor Harrison Ford and one of his better known roles, world-renowned adventurer Indiana Jones. His Horde counterpart, Belloc Brightblade, is a reference to Indiana's nemesis in Raiders of the Lost Ark, René Belloq.
- His quotes in Stormwind Keep are nearly identical to Ford's lines in Raiders of the Lost Ark and The Last Crusade.
- His mention of Cuddy Nordlinge is a reference to Luke Cuddy and John Nordlinger, authors of the book World of Warcraft and Philosophy: Wrath of the Philosopher King.
- His appearance in Silvershard Mines is most likely a reference to the mine cart action scene in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom.
- His fear of rats is a reference to Indiana Jones' fear of snakes.
