Azuremyst Isle is one of the two main islands that make up the Azuremyst Isles. Located off the coast of northern Kalimdor, south of Bloodmyst Isle, it is home to the draenei, refugees who fled Outland aboard the massive dimensional vessel named the Exodar. When the dimensional ship crashed on Azeroth, powerful crystals from their vessel were scattered about the island, mutating flora and fauna near the debris. Following the ill-fated landing, the draenei worked feverishly to find survivors and mend any damages inflicted on the isle, and have since established the remains of the Exodar as their base of power. Having suffered a long and arduous history of exile, the draenei are now resolved to give their lives in defense of Azuremyst Isle.[1] Thousands of the draenei have since settled on the Azuremyst Isles.[2]

History

Early history

As part of the Azuremyst Isles, the island was long ago a mountainous forest, located on the western edge of ancient Kalimdor. According to draenei historians, the land was mostly untamed by the Kaldorei Empire who left it unsettled on purpose, so that hungry beasts could feed off the land and hunters could trap the choicest prey.[3] Despite being untamed, night elves still lived here, as ancient ruins predating the War of the Ancients can be found across the area,[4] notably one of their cities at Wrathscale Point.[5] When the Great Sundering rent the world, the Azuremyst Isles split off the main continent, trapping plants and animals who slowly adapted to survive the harsh new environment.[3]

Other intelligent species have also made their home on the islands, notably two tribes of furbolgs who have lived here for centuries,[6] namely the Bristlelimb and the Stillpine. A few groups of owlbeasts are inhabiting the region, including the Oomooroo wildkin, the Nestlewood wildkin in the Ammen Vale, and the Moonwing wildkin on Silvermyst Isle. The Siltfin murlocs can also be encountered across the western shores of both Azuremyst and Silvermyst isles.

At some point, the night elves mostly abandoned these islands in favor of mainland Kalimdor, leaving only Cowlen and his family on the southern Silvermyst Isle, where they have been living for many years.[7]

The Burning Crusade

In Year 26 ADP, when the Exodar crashed on Azeroth, ending its course on the Azuremyst Isles, the casualties were high but many of the draenei passengers survived.[8] As the survivors salvaged what they could of their ship, the Hand of Argus created a forward outpost named Azure Watch on the island.[9] The elekks played a large role in helping the draenei establish themselves on their new home, as the strong draft animals bore building materials needed to build new settlements and set down the trade routes.[10]

The vessel's crash also scattered power crystals across the island, an event the Stillpine furbolgs called the "crystal storm".[11] These crystals were eventually ingested by the nearby nightstalkers, poisoning them due to the effects of the Bloodmyst Radiation.[12] Fearing that the infection would spread if left unchecked, Exarch Menelaous assigned adventurers to purge the forests of the infected.[13]

After the Sunfury sabotaged the Exodar and caused its crash, blood elf bandits could be encountered across Azuremyst Isle, hiding near roads to ambush the travelers.[14]

At some point, an Alliance flotilla commanded by Admiral Odesyus was forced to put to shore on the southern shores, due to the actions of Venture Co. goblins stowed away in the hold.[15] On the beach the crew landed on, they established Odesyus' Landing as their outpost, and shortly thereafter were contacted by the draenei who helped them find the traitor.[16] Meanwhile, the Wrathscale naga attempted to conquer the island with reinforcements from Nazjatar,[17] until Priestess Kyleen Il'dinare sent heroes to kill Warlord Sriss'tiz[18] and cleanse Wrathscale Point of its invaders.[19]

After the draenei joined the Alliance, the Elune's Blessing elven ship began to operate between Valaar's Berth and Rut'theran Village, connecting both the Exodar and the capital of Darnassus.

Prophet's Lesson

By the time of the Cataclysm in 28 ADP, the draenei had mostly reverted the damage to the island, which was not heavily affected by the return of Deathwing.[20] While Azeroth was plagued by catastrophes, rumors had spread that the draenei withstood the breaking of the world, and that refuge could be found on Azuremyst Isle. Human refugees arrived in lost humility at first, in ones and twos, by leaky boat and makeshift raft, risking the unknown to flee the horribly known. In the beginning, the draenei had aided as they could, giving the refugees a place outside the Exodar, healing them, and sharing food and water. But when the outcasts sent out word to find their friends and families, echoing throughout Kalimdor, the refugee camp quickly grew and boasted a thousand exiles. When the draenei tested the nearly repaired Exodar, the refugees thought they were going to leave Azeroth, and started rioting. After a vision, Velen emerged to quell the unrest, and peace was restored. While the refugees started returning to their former homes, the prophet told his people to remain on Azeroth and go out into the world to heal its people, and in so doing, to make them strong for the great war to come.[20]

The Exodar under attack by the Burning Legion.

During the third invasion of the Burning Legion in 32 ADP, Azuremyst Isle and the Exodar were invaded by the Burning Legion, who sought to destroy the naaru O'ros.[21] With the support of Archmage Khadgar's champions, the draenei defenders managed to cut off the Legion's reinforcements by destroying their fel portals,[22] and eventually defeated their leader High General Rakeesh.[23]

After the conflict, Prophet Velen ordered Grand Artificer Romuul to prepare their vessel, declaring that they were going home.[21] The draenei later assembled a force of considerable magnitude outside their capital, training their forces on the island's western shore, while the Vindicaar, a draenei spaceship, could be seen hovering above the island. Several Lightsworn Anchorites of the Hand of Argus were also seen protecting the island with arkonite defense crystals. When the prophet issued a call to arms to the Armies of Legionfall to support the Argus Campaign, both the Alliance and Horde answered the call as well,[24] and later gathered their forces in Azuremyst Isle for the departure.[25][26]

During the War of the Thorns in 33 ADP, High King Anduin Wrynn believed the Horde would eventually target the Azuremyst Isles, which would have necessitated the evacuation of the draenei, however, the Horde Army remained focused only on conquering Darnassus and the Exodar was not immediately threatened.[27] After the burning of Teldrassil, the evacuation of night elven survivors to Azuremyst was overseen by Dentaria Silverglade from Lor'danel,[28] while Blood Guard Aldo Rockrain and his forces attempted to stop them.[29]

Exploring Azeroth

After the armistice in 34 ADP, when the Horde Council sent Zekhan and Rexxar to look over their holdings across Kalimdor, Velen extended them an invitation to the Azuremyst Isles, where they were assigned an escort consisting of Ya'rika and Kea'ton while visiting the Exodar and the region.[30] Despite their efforts, the draenei couldn't clear away the toxic blight that had been spoiled over both islands.[3]

Dragonflight

Dragonflight This section concerns content related to Dragonflight.

In Year 40 ADP, Prophet Velen decided to hold an old eredar holiday, the Tishamaat, which had not been held since the days of Argus.[31] During the celebration, draenei from all over Azeroth and Outland were invited, but also Lightforged draenei, Broken, Lost Ones, the Krokul of Argus, and even the repentant man'ari.[32] Exarch Admetius described Azuremyst as recovered and hoped that Bloodmyst Isle would do the same as well after the defeat of Sironas.[33]

Geography

Arcane storms strike this peaceful area off the coast of Kalimdor. Evergreens and purple flowers cover the land. The island itself is divided into two parts by the Crystalbrook River, running north-south. The eastern, slightly smaller region is dubbed Ammen Vale, as it is sheltered by hills on all sides. To the southwest lies Silvermyst Isle, close enough to reach by swimming without difficulty, and small enough to be considered part of the main island.

Azuremyst Isle contains no dungeons, raid dungeons, micro dungeons, or battlegrounds. It is the starting area for the draenei and contains a 1-5 leveling area, Ammen Vale. The draenei city, the Exodar, can also be found in this zone with a flight path to Bloodmyst Isle. The mainland is accessible by boat from Valaar's Berth or by flight path from the Exodar, both going to Rut'theran Village.

Thunderstorms and foggy nights are common in the area.[34][35]

Notable NPCs

Main article: Azuremyst Isle NPCs

Azuremyst Isle is the new home of several notable people; not all of the draenei. At the Crash Site, Vindicator Aldar and Technician Zhanaa work tirelessly to keep in contact with other draenei scattered across the Ammen Vale. At Azure Watch, Exarch Menelaous watches over the people of the village, but also seeks to repair the damages caused by the crash. Admiral Odesyus, recently forced to land his fleet on the southern coast of the island, does his best to root out the traitors in his crew. High Chief Stillpine also seeks aid from the newly arrived draenei to take back Stillpine Hold.

The quests of Azuremyst Isle range from the early level 1-5 quests of Ammen Vale to the level 5-10 quests of the main isle. Quests of note include the The Prophecy of Akida quest chain, in which draenei learn the language of the furbolgs; a quest chain involving Admiral Odesyus as he hunts down the traitor in his crew; and quests given by the furbolgs of Stillpine Hold.

Many of the 1-5 quests are draenei-only, but the 6+ quests are available to any race.

Notes and trivia

  • The forest of Azuremyst holds many secrets, one of those being a rare plant known as the azure snapdragon, which some claim to be a panacea - a cure all.[36]
  • The pandaren Mojo Stormstout was cataloging the local wildlife on Azuremyst Isle when the Exodar crashed.[37]
  • The Azuremyst of B [45] Two If By Sea is an instanced version of the classic map. Only area near the Exodar is accessible, the rest being bordered by an invisible wall. In this version, Azuremyst is considered a contested territory instead of an Alliance one.
  • Azuremyst Isle, like the nearby Bloodmyst Isle (and like Quel'Thalas), is implemented as a part of the Outland map, not part of Azeroth proper. This decision was made during the development of The Burning Crusade when it was still a separately sold expansion, to prevent players without the expansion from getting there. This is why a loading screen appears upon entering the zone. Players trying to get to Azuremyst Isle from mainland Azeroth by flying or swimming across the water, rather than by boat or flight path, will hit an invisible wall.
  • The server Azuremyst US is named after the island.
  • Azuremyst Isle, one of WoW's starting zones, saw the least amount of PvP action (along with Teldrassil) due to the fact that the only way for Horde players to get to Azuremyst Isle itself was via ship from Rut'theran Village in Teldrassil. Other starting zones were directly accessible by the opposing faction without such hazards. For this reason, some draenei on PvP servers left for the human and dwarven starting zones.
