Archmage Vargoth is a human mage and a member of the Council of Six. Throughout most of his appearances, he interacts with the adventurers using a projection.

It is currently unknown if he survived Dalaran's destruction.

Biography

During the invasion of Draenor in 8 ADP, Vargoth was the leader of the Kirin Tor mages that accompanied the Alliance Expedition to Draenor, where he founded Kirin'Var Village in Farahlon (later known as Netherstorm). While there, he worked with his mages to study the ley lines, and later heard of the alliance between the humans and orcs from the Laughing Skull clan. At some point, he asked General Turalyon to deliver their reports to Dalaran, apparently not knowing about the Alliance heroes that stayed here after the destruction of the Dark Portal and the explosion of Draenor.[3]

The Burning Crusade

Prior to the invasion of Outland in 26 ADP, Prince Kael'thas Sunstrider discovered Kirin'Var Village, and one night, he led the Sunfury to attack it with a mana bomb.[4][5] Overwhelmed, Archmage Vargoth cast a protective ward on the Violet Tower to protect the survivors, however, his apprentice Naberius betrayed him and handed the blood elves the secrets of the tower's defenses. His treason caused the defeat of Kirin'var, the massacre of all civilians, and the imprisonment of Vargoth himself in the tower by the prince of Quel'Thalas.[6][7] After the Alliance and Horde forces arrived in Outland, Ravandwyr, an apprentice of Vargoth, asked the adventurers to help him free his master.[8]

Wrath of the Lich King

By the time of the war against the Lich King in 27 ADP, Vargoth returned to Dalaran and took up residence in his own retreat, at the top of the Violet Citadel. The room was only accessible via the book  [The Schools of Arcane Magic - Mastery], and if the adventurer talked to the archmage, he rewarded them with a Kirin Tor Familiar.

During the Cataclysm in 28 ADP, Vargoth sent his image to Mount Hyjal, which helped the adventurers to defend Sethria's Roost against the minions of Ragnaros the Firelord.[9]

On the Isle of Thunder in 30 ADP, Vargoth's image was present at the Violet Rise, tasking adventurers to kill a Skumblade saurok in order to perform an illusion that would disguise them as saurok.[10]

Warlords of Draenor

Warlords of Draenor This section concerns content related to Warlords of Draenor.

During the war in Draenor in 31 ADP, Vargoth sent various artifacts from the main timeline into the alternate timeline of Draenor.[11] Adventurers collected them and brought to Zooti Fizzlefury, Vargoth's most trusted friend and confidant,[12] who summoned Vargoth's image to Draenor. The image then joined the adventurers as a follower in their garrisons.[13]

He noted that his image was still very "outdated" and that he had traded up those old robes for much better-looking ones.

Legion

Vargoth as he appears since Legion.

During the third invasion of the Burning Legion in 32 ADP, Vargoth appeared in-person once more, having joined the Council of Six. He voted in favor to allow the Horde back into the Kirin Tor and was present when the spell to teleport Dalaran to the Broken Isles was cast.[14] When Aethas Sunreaver asked the council to allow him to rejoin the Kirin Tor, Vargoth voted for.[15]

Vargoth was later revealed to have ties with the Empyrean Society, an organization of mages looking into forbidden magics such as fel.[16] Khadgar stated that because Vargoth had proven his loyalty to the Kirin Tor many times in the past, he would be given the benefit of the doubt. Nevertheless, Khadgar was obligated to share the concerns about Vargoth with the rest of the Council of Six. Kalecgos and Karlain, two other members of the council, also noted that they had seen Vargoth behaving oddly.[17]

As Vargoth had been absent for a while, the Conjuror of the Tirisgarde took a look through his room in the Violet Citadel alongside Kalec and discovered his journal, within which they found notes about the Nightborne Soulstone, an artifact able to channel the power of the souls captured within it.[18] Kalec, Millhouse Manastorm, and the Conjuror worked together on locating the Soulstone in the Arcway Vaults, where Vargoth revealed himself to have claimed the Soulstone and betrayed the mages.[19]

The Tirisgarde later discovered that Vargoth had been possessed by Kathra'natir, and upon being freed, the demon was imprisoned in the Nightborne Soulstone that he had been using to drain Meryl Felstorm. After his defeat, Vargoth explained that he had never betrayed Dalaran, but was in fact betrayed by the Empyrean Society and fell into the clutches of Kathra'natir who made him his puppet.[20] He later entered the ranks of the Tirisgarde to thank the Conjuror for saving both his reputation and his life.[21]

When Magni called upon the champions of the Armies of Legionfall to draw the corruption out of the Sword of Sargeras, Vargoth carried Aluneth, representing the Tirisgarde for non-mage heroess.[22]

Quotes

Netherstorm gossip

The night Kael'thas leveled the village, I could do nothing to help. His magic had already sealed me in the tower, exacerbating my torment by forcing me to witness the deaths of my fellows.

And still the voices are calling from far away, waking me up in the middle of the night.

Archmage Vargoth's Retreat

Greetings <class>, to my humble retreat. I find this place very relaxing and I have always loved being at home in Dalaran. Sometimes though, it can be a lonely place... such a lonely place.

Hall of the Guardian
  • Archmage Vargoth suddenly loses his balance and lurches to one side.
  • Archmage Vargoth's fingers twitch spasmodically.
  • Archmage Vargoth looks into the distance.
Oculus gossip

Some call me eccentric or even daft, but they fail to see the bigger picture. Our only hope in defeating the burning legion[sic] is to find new sources of power, even if that means taking great risks.

Your new weapon is a testament to that!

Hall of the Guardian gossip
  • Now that Kathra'natir is no longer a threat, we can safely search for powerful weapons to use against the Burning Legion.
  • Kathra'natir was a voice in my head, calling from far away. I am so glad he has been silenced!
  • I owe you a great debt, Archmage <name>. I have not forgotten.
Hall of the Guardian gossip (before the hall is repaired)

Hm, have we met before? Your face is quite familiar.

Oh! You are the hero I've been hearing so much about. You are most impressive...

Algeth'ar Academy gossip

Few things merit an in-person visit such as this. But when I heard so many dragons were willing to share some of their secrets... well I just had to come.

I have already learned so much. Like how to add smell and taste to an illusion! Just imagine it!

He also appears as one of the bosses that can be encountered in the Dalaran Heist single-player experience.
