She is said to be deeply in touch with the spirits of Azeroth by her student Tiala Whitemane[2] and one of the wisest of the winged druids by the Vision of Ysera.[3] Her colleague, Thisalee Crow, refers to Choluna as a scholar[1] and is described to be experienced.[4] Although Aviana was long dead, Choluna sometimes heard her voice in the whisper of swaying leaves.[5]

History

Cataclysm

Cataclysm This section concerns content related to Cataclysm.

At the time of the Cataclysm, the Shrine of Aviana in Mount Hyjal was Choluna's home and she acted as an instructor there. Tiala Whitemane, one of her students, as well as the Vision of Ysera, sent an adventurer to learn from her and to aid the shrine, as the area became threatened by harpies.[2][3]

Wanting to sharpen their focus in order to be able to better defend the mountain as part of the war against Deathwing, Choluna gave them a sacred nectar and set them to use it at Aviana's Burial Circle. At the circle, they heard whispers, but they couldn't decipher them.[5] The adventurer returned to Choluna and told her about the whisper,[6] and she immediately thought that it may have been Aviana herself, wanting to return to the world of the living. As such, to bring her back, they needed something from Aviana's past, so it fell to obtaining an ancient feather from Blaithe, Aviana's former consort. To summon Blaithe, Choluna gave the adventurer a bird call. With the saddened Blaithe killed and his feather in hand, Choluna performed a ritual and saw a Vision of Aviana's Egg, which was revealed to be a ploy from the Vision of Sethria.[7]

The Druids of the Talon then worked on defeating Sethria and recovering the egg. When her fellow druid Thisalee Crow was successful in this endeavor, Thisalee sent the egg and the adventurer back to Choluna.[8] She was impressed by the adventurer and believed that they were meant to bring Aviana back. Choluna gave them an incense to use on the egg, an action that resurrected Aviana.[9] She then informed other druids of the winged demigoddess' return.[10]

Choluna later participated in the counterattack on the Firelands during the Firelands Invasion and was found at the Furnace in the Molten Front. She was interested in specimens of plant life that her fellow druids and adventurers could come across in the Firelands, which she sent to Aviana for further analysis.[1] Choluna also sent adventurers to defeat the Lieutenants of Flame that appeared at Ragnaros' Reach.[11]

Choluna was also one of the dozens of past characters encountered by adventurers to assist in killing the fire elementals at Sethria's Roost.[12]

During the war in Draenor, Choluna appeared in the Horde garrison of Frostwall in Frostfire Ridge, and at Skysea Ridge in Gorgrond. She asked the adventurers to help against the Iron Horde who had been excavating salt pools in Gorgrond and searching for an artifact.[13] After recovering Bladefury's orders, she moved to Cragplume Cauldron and transported the adventurer there.[14] Choluna was also interested in goren, especially for what they eat.[15]

After Azuka Bladefury stole the heart from the garrison, Choluna moved to Gorgorek's Fall to face off against the Warlord, only to witness Gorgorek's revival.[16] She immediately sent stormcrows back to Frostwall and asked Rokhan to deploy Horde's army into the Gates of Tanaan. After Azuka was killed, she showed up at the Path of Glory and led the commander to Durotan and the Horde forces to confront Warchief Grommash. After the encounter, she joined the Horde garrison as a follower.[4]

Gossip

Mount Hyjal

Welcome, <class>!

Gossip Tell me about Aviana.

Fair Aviana, the Mistress of Birds! All winged creatures of Azeroth once owed her allegiance, especially we Druids of the Talon. It's by her grace that we were granted the ability to shift forms and take to the skies.
Aviana was both beautiful and terrible, like the great birds of prey she counted among her children. She lived in the towering spirit realm of G'Hanir, the Mother Tree, but appeared on Azeroth in the form of a great winged goddess.
Gossip You speak in the past tense. What happened to her?
<Choluna's face darkens.>
Ten thousand years ago demons flooded across Azeroth in the War of the Ancients. Aviana called her children to the skies and fought off the demon hordes from the front lines. Her wrath was inescapable.
Hundreds fell before the fury of her talons. But ultimately she was surrounded by Doomguards, their barbed lances piercing her sides...
It is said that her blood itself attacked the demons, searing their flesh, destroying them even as she herself fell from the sky.
Gossip What became of her?
Aviana perished on the battlefield that day, but the mortal races and the remaining ancients ultimately triumphed. The first druids found her body among the carnage, and bore it up here, to the highest mountain.
She was laid to rest just outside this shrine, within a circle of sacred stones.
A seed of G'Hanir was used to plant the World Tree, and it is all that remains of that sacred realm, which otherwise perished with her.
Sanctuary of Malorne

Hello, <name>. Are you helping with the invasion? A skilled <class> such as yourself will be a valuable addition to our force.

Molten Front

We cannot rest yet, my child. Hyjal still stands, but if we falter on the Fire Lord's doorstep, all may still be lost. Let the strength of the ancients be with us.

Notes and trivia

  • During N [35 Daily] The Protectors of Hyjal, Choluna rides  [Reins of the Raven Lord].
  • While she was accompanying the commander on a patrol in Frostwall, she could turn into her cat form, but did not use her tauren cat form as she did in Talador, but instead she used the night elf version of the cat form. This might have been due to the fact that she is the Garrison follower counterpart of Thisalee Crow, a night elf. However, it was corrected at some point and now uses tauren cat form.
  • While the quest recruits her directly,  [Contract: Choluna] was also created during development.
