“I believe that you will find that my gift to you is not just a profound duty—which it is—but also a delight—which it is! Magic must be regulated, managed, and controlled. But it must also be appreciated and valued and not hoarded. Such is the contradiction you must deal with. May you be dutiful ... and joyous both.”
The blue dragonflight is a draconic organization led by the eponymous blue dragons to uphold their creed of managing and watching over the flow of magic on Azeroth. During the ordering of the planet, the titan Norgannon blessed Malygos and his flight with power over the arcane and the duty of ensuring it would never be abused.[4] The Lord of Magic and his Prime Consort Sindragosa ruled the flight until the War of the Ancients, when the crazed Deathwing used the Demon Soul to wipe out the majority of the blue dragons, leaving only Malygos both weakened and depressed with precious few eggs left.
The blue dragonflight slowly but surely recovered over the millennia, until the ambitious dragons Kalecgos and Tyrygosa attempted to bring Malygos out of his stupor. They were successful, but rather than lead their flight as the noble and wise leader they had hoped for, Malygos was appalled at what he saw as the overuse of magic in the world. Rallying his flight and all the mages supporting his cause, he began the Nexus War, seeking to subjugate or wipe out all magic usage on Azeroth. He was opposed by the Kirin Tor and the other dragonflights under the Wyrmrest Accord; the war ultimately ended in the Aspect's demise.
During the Cataclysm, the flight had to choose a leader between Malygos' son, Arygos, and the dragon Kalecgos; though the former ultimately sided with Deathwing, leading to his demise. Chosen by his kind and empowered by the Embrace, Kalecgos became the new Steward of Magic among the Dragon Aspects. After the Fall of Deathwing, and the beginning of the Age of Mortals, the blue dragons were left in a state of disarray. More and more left their home at the Nexus daily, until finally Kalecgos declared the flight disbanded and all blue dragons free to follow their own individual desires.
With the awakening of the Dragon Isles, Kalecgos realized his error and pledged himself to reunite his flight. With the support of Senegos, Stellagosa, and the simulacrum of Sindragosa, he reunited the blue dragons once more as a family, vowing to uphold their oath to Azeroth. After the defeat of Fyrakk and the blooming of Amirdrassil, Kalecgos was once again empowered as the Blue Aspect, but this time by Azeroth herself.
Culture
Magic is what most concerns the members of the blue dragonflight. Acquiring it, researching it, cataloging it. Blue dragons are masters of the arcane, and they wield it with a natural, almost intrinsic, ease. Even the flight's dragonspawn armies are flush with magical aptitude. The blues believe that with this power comes a certain responsibility and so members of the blue flight can often be found in positions policing and monitoring the use of magic by non-dragons. However, as they love their rules, they have a hard time understanding that sometimes you just need to let something "grow".[5]
Their traditional home is Coldarra in Northrend,[6] where they remain close to the great Dragonblight. Historically, blue dragons have had a reputation for spending their days in solitary contemplation of the secrets of the world, but in recent times blue dragons have proved to be more social due to the growing threats to all living creatures. Their approach towards mortals, specifically arcane spellcasters, can vary anywhere from amiable curiosity to outright hostility.
Of all the dragonflights, the blues are the ones most drawn to order and calmness. Ironically, this made them the ones least able to deal with the chaos caused by Malygos' insanity and eventual death.[7]
After Tyrygosa exposed Malygos to the nether energies of the nether dragons, Malygos' insanity was calmed. Unfortunately, this led to the brutal Nexus War, as Malygos rallied his flight to oppose all magic being used in the world, as he decided it was far too rampant. In the aftermath of the war, the blue dragonflight was left shattered and without a leader. To make matters worse, one of the lead candidates, Malygos' heir, Arygos, sided with their ancient enemy, Deathwing, in order to try and take command as the new aspect of magic. While this ultimately led to Arygos' death at the hands of Chromatus, it traumatized his sister, Kirygosa. Kalecgos was chosen to lead their flight, though he eventually chose to disband the flight, an action he would later come to regret. Azuregos and several other dragons have criticized his decision heavily, with Azuregos becoming the steward of the Nexus to ensure that the various secrets that were abandoned within it would not be abused by mortals.
Despite the disbanding of the blue dragonflight, some clutches still remained, such as the Azurewing, led by Senegos. This group of dragons included many dragonspawn, led primarily by Agapanthus, and shepherded what they believed may be the last clutch of whelps for their flight at the time.
Blue dragonkin are sometimes referred to as Azure, Cobalt, or Sapphire.
Nomenclature
Members of the blue dragonflight most often have names ending in "gos" for males, or "gosa" for females. Sometimes, synonyms of the word "blue", or terms relating to spellcasting find their way into their names as well.
Membership
- Main article: Blue dragon
The blue dragonflight is primarily made up of, as the name implies, blue dragonkin. These include the blue dragons themselves, but also blue-scaled variants of drakonid and dragonspawn. They later come to accept dracthyr among their ranks as well during recruitment at Algeth'ar Academy.
A number of mortals have been shown to serve the blue dragonflight, primarily among Malygos' Mage hunters. They employ strange hounds, also known as magehunters, which aid them in hunting down renegade mages. After the Nexus War, the blue dragonflight has been shown working extensively with the Kirin Tor, a group their aspect is also a leader of.
When taking humanoid form, most blue dragons prefer to transform into humans,[8] though dwarf, gnome and quel'dorei guises are also common. While many blue dragons chose elaborate forms, the Aspect of Magic Kalecgos chose a half-elf form instead, as he wanted to be approachable and walk among mortals as a friend and equal, as someone that they can trust.[9]
History
Charge of the dragonflights
According to legends, satisfied that the small world had been ordered and that their work was done, the titans prepared to leave. But before they departed, they charged the greatest species of the world with the task of watching over Azeroth. In that age, there were many dragonflights. Yet there were five flights that held dominion over their brethren. It was these five flights that the titans chose to shepherd the budding world. The greatest members of the Pantheon of Order imbued a portion of their power upon each of the flights' leaders. Norgannon, the Keeper of Celestial Magics and Lore, bestowed a portion of his cosmic power upon the massive blue dragon, Malygos. From then on, he would be known as the Spell-Weaver, the guardian of magic and hidden arcanum.[10]
In truth, in Azeroth's ancient past, the Dragon Aspects proto-dragons stood united against a foe who threatened their entire species: the bloodthirsty Father of Dragons, Galakrond. Malygos was one of the more intelligent of proto-dragons, capable of broken speech unlike most of the other, more animal-like of his kind. Alongside Alexstrasza, Ysera, Neltharion, Nozdormu and the Keeper Tyr, Malygos faced Galakrond and the not-living. After killing Galakrond, Malygos and the others were approached by the other Keepers, and Tyr suggested empowering the proto-dragons to make them defenders of Azeroth, as they proved they were able to stand for the planet. Only Odyn disagreed and forbade the other Keepers from proceeding with that idea, but they decided to go against him. They reached out to the Pantheon, and each of the titans blessed the proto-dragons with a portion of their vast power, channeled through the Keepers. They became majestic beings called dragons, and among them, Malygos became the Aspect of Magic while his blue dragonflight was charged with the task of watching over the use of magic, lest any force should threaten its perfect tranquility. One of their first acts was to encourage the rumor that the titans created them from Galakrond, to prevent the truth about Galakrond from leaking, to ensure no one would follow in the behemoth's footsteps.[11]
The time following this came to be known as the age of dragons, when the civilization of dragonkind was at its peak.[12]
Winterskorn War
When fallen Keeper Loken instigated the Winterskorn War, fought between the Winterskorn vrykul and the earthen, Tyr and his called upon the Dragon Aspects for aid. The noble Aspects grew enraged upon seeing so many dead titan-forged, even more when they learned that proto-dragons had been enslaved. Much as they had done in the fight against Galakrond, the Aspects worked in unison to overwhelm the vrykul army, unleashing their powers on the Winterskorn's iron ranks. Among them, Malygos drained the magical essence that fueled the Winterskorn constructs and golems, rendering them useless. He also shattered the enchanted snares that bound the proto-dragons and set the beasts free. In the end, the iron vrykuls were locked away in tomb cities across northern Kalimdor, where they would not know the peaceful slumber of the Emerald Dream, but instead they would languish in a timeless, unconscious slumber for thousands upon thousands of years.[13]
War of the Scaleborn
Twenty thousand years ago, under the lead of the Primal Incarnates, the Primalists proto-dragons joined together to resist the influx of titanic influence and demanded that Keeper Tyr be exiled from the Dragon Isles. When Malygos and the Aspects refused, it sowed the seeds of rebellion for the Primalists,[14] and over the years, what began as a difference of opinion gradually grew into hard feelings, which divided dragonkind and ultimately led to the War of the Scaleborn, in which the blue dragons participated.[15]
Aluneth
At some point, while manipulating the fabric of reality, the wise and mirthful blue dragons tapped into another realm of existence and made contact with the strange arcane entity called Aluneth. The blue dragons loved unraveling mysteries and delving into the secrets of the universe. They were so intrigued by Aluneth's existence that they summoned the entity into the world for further study. Aluneth immediately went on a rampage through the blue dragons' lair, the Nexus. The arcane presence destroyed countless rare artifacts and tomes of power before finally being contained. The dragons were not angry about what had happened--they were delighted by Aluneth's capricious nature. After years of conducting harmless experiments on Aluneth, the blue dragons satisfied their curiosity and sent the entity back to its own realm. Later, the gifted sorcerer Meitre learned from a blue dragon about Aluneth.[16]
War of the Ancients
Ten thousands years ago, when the Highborne opened the portal for the Burning Legion through the Well of Eternity, marking the start of the War of the Ancients, all the dragonflights left the Dragon Isles to join the fight against the demonic invaders.[17] Under the orders of Alexstrasza, the dragons convened at their ancient meeting ground of Wyrmrest Temple to discuss how best to hold back the Legion's invasion. It was during one of these gatherings that Neltharion convinced his fellow Aspects and their flights to sacrifice a portion of their power and infuse it into a magical matrix that enhanced the device's power greatly, the Dragon Soul.[18] During the artifact's empowerment, the area where the ritual took place was surrounded by a giant, impenetrable magical barrier as Neltharion didn't want anything or anyone to stop the ritual.[19] This barrier was guarded from the inside by dragons from all flights.[20] The black flight, however, had secretly refrained from imparting any of their own power.
Amid a furious battle between the demons and the Kaldorei Resistance, the five dragonflights made their final assault and Neltharion unleashed the full might of the empowered Dragon Soul, utterly decimating the Legion. However, the Black Aspect then revealed his madness and turned the weapon against his own allies, night elf and dragon, killing thousands and demanding that all of Azeroth bowed to his mastery.[18] Malygos and his blue dragonflight attempted to stop Neltharion, who summarily executed the entirety of the flight with the exception of the Aspect of Magic himself. The other dragons were locked in Deathwing's control until the unexpected intervention of Korialstrasz broke his concentration and allowed the other dragons to counter-attack. This proved a failure, however, and Neltharion scattered the hundreds of assembled dragons before retreating from the field of battle, taking the Dragon Soul with him.[21]
Though Neltharion's assault was short-lived, it had changed the world forever. Single-handedly, he had shattered the unity and power of the great dragonflights. On seeing his followers die, Malygos was driven mad with a grief that would linger for thousands and thousands of years. His prime consort Sindragosa died from her injuries after being flung far into the icy north, including many other blue dragons.[22] Wounded and shocked, the remaining blues and the other noble dragons were forced to abandon their mortal allies. Henceforth, Neltharion would be known as Deathwing, and his treachery would curse his own flight to a life of fear and seclusion.[18] The Dragon Wars began just after the betrayal, leading all the dragonflights against the black dragonflight, which left the dragon race in a state of near-extinction.[23] The black dragons were hunted down and nearly annihilated,[24] and the Dragon Isles were ultimately sealed after they defeat.[25]
Meanwhile, Korialstrasz teleported himself to the icy caverns of the blue flight to search for any remaining life. He found none, save a few nearly frozen, but still intact, eggs. Knowing these eggs were the only hope of a future the blue flight had, Korialstrasz placed them in a pocket universe, where time ran ever so slowly, until he could pass them on to someone he could trust.[26] One of those eggs contained Arygos.
After the Sundering
After the loss of most of his children and mates, Malygos hid out in his lair at Coldarra for thousands of years, slowly going mad.[6] Perhaps Malygos's last sane act was placing many of his surviving dragonkin in the caverns of Mazthoril to hold eternal vigil over the sacred site of Mount Hyjal, location of the world tree Nordrassil and the second Well of Eternity. After that, he isolated himself in his lair, refusing all visitors, while his presence in the world diminished over time.
A few remaining blues continued their lord's study of magic throughout the millennia. The Arcanomicon, a map of the world's ley lines gifted to Malygos ages ago by the titan Norgannon, was continuously updated and revised by the blue dragons over the long years of Malygos's seclusion.[27] Mighty blue wyrms, such as Sapphiron and Azuregos, continued to search for and hoard artifacts of great magical power, keeping them from inexperienced hands.[28][29] When the legion was planning its second invasion of Azeroth, another agent, Arcanagos, attempted to sway the Guardian Medivh away from the path he was taking under the control of the Dark Titan, Sargeras.
In 6,000 BDP, the isolated Shandaral Highborne witnessed members of the blue dragonflight using spells to crystallize living things and draw power from them. The dragons did that out of curiosity, and the elves saw a way to end their suffering. The Highborne attempted to interact with the dragons, but they ignored them or showed hostility towards them. As a result, Highborne sorcerers infiltrated the Nexus and succeeded in stealing the knowledge of dragons' techniques. Their greed, however, drove them to steal artifacts and triggered magical wards, sending blue dragons into a frenzy. Although the elven thieves managed to escape, soon the dragons' retribution came to Shandaral. The Highborne sorcerers gathered on a cliff overlooking Moonsong and hoped to use the stolen spells against the dragons. They prepared to crystallize a portion of the forest and use its power against the dragons. Despite their effort, the spell took an enormous size, casting a huge explosion. The torrent of energy instantly crystallized the entire forest of Moonsong and its inhabitants. The blue dragons, sensing the spellwork, successfully escaped.[30]
In time, the flight's ancient biases were tempered by the influence of the other dragonflights who had stepped in to care for Malygos' clutch in his absence. Unlike the elder blues, this new generation of dragons accepted both the titan mantle of arcane guardianship and the dragonflights' sacred duty to protect Azeroth. Though they initially hid their true identities behind mortal visages, younger blues sought membership within the Kirin Tor to offer their support and to ensure that the elite mages of Azeroth did not misuse magic again.[31]
A thousand years before modern times, the almost-extinct blue dragons still managed to lend their aid to the night elves and the bronze dragonflight during the War of the Shifting Sands. Led by Arygos, a child of Malygos, the blues fought the silithid and their qiraji masters furiously and ultimately helped push them back to their city, where they were sealed away from the world. The dragons suffered few casualties, but the progeny of Malygos, Arygos, was believed lost, having charged deep into Ahn'Qiraj during the final push. After the war, a shard of the Scepter of the Shifting Sands was entrusted to the blue wyrm Azuregos by Anachronos the bronze.[32] Unbeknownst to his flight, Arygos, along with Caelestrasz and Merithra, was not dead, simply captured. The dark master of Ahn'Qiraj used the tortured dragons to power his new creations: Moam and the other obsidian destroyers.[33]
823 BDP, Aegwynn, the Guardian of Azeroth, sensed something dark stirring in the icy lands of Northrend. She traveled to the distant continent and found a pack of demons hunting errant blue dragons, feeding on their potent arcane energies.[34]
After the death of Medivh, the Kirin Tor entrusted the greatstaff Aluneth to the blue dragons and locked it in the Nexus Vault.[16]
Battle of Grim Batol
During the Second War in 5 ADP, Deathwing led a powerful orc warlock named Nekros to the Demon Soul, which he used to enslave both Alexstrasza and the red dragonflight. Since her consort Korialstrasz could not free her, he pleaded for help from the Dragon Aspects, but they were wary of intervening, fearing that the Dragonmaw clan would destroy them or the Dragonqueen.[35][36] When Korialstrasz approached Malygos, the Blue Aspect seemed almost indifferent to the news at first, until the red consort hinted that the aspect of life could help him with his nearly extinct flight.[37]
When Deathwing appeared during the Battle of Grim Batol, Ysera, Nozdormu, and Malygos joined the fight against their corrupted brother. Though they had rebuffed Korialstrasz's calls to help, the Dragon Aspects had not ignored him, keeping a close watch on Grim Batol in case an opening presented itself. As the five Dragon Aspects grappled in the sky, Rhonin and his mortal allies eventually found a flaw in the Demon Soul and destroyed it. In that moment, the power trapped within the relic escaped and returned to the Dragon Aspects, forcing the wounded Deathwing to escape.[35][38]
For ten thousand years, Deathwing's fellow Dragon Aspects had lived without the full measure of their power, and the sudden return of their strength was physically and mentally exhausting. Though most of the Aspects were eager to put the past behind them, it would be many years before they fully recovered.[39]
Third War
In Year 20 ADP, like the other dragonflights, the blue dragonflight did not play any significant role in the events of the Third War. Arthas Menethil, first death knight of the Lich King, did, however, invade the icy lair of the blue dragon Sapphiron, where the wyrm had hoarded a great treasure and artifacts of significant power. The champion of the Lich King, assisted by the Crypt lord Anub'arak, quickly dispatched Sapphiron's brood and slew the ancient servant of Malygos, raising him in undeath as a mighty frost wyrm.[28]
During the Siege of Dalaran, two blue drakes were ironically held prisoners in Dalaran, being transformed into flying sheep.[40]
The Sunwell
After the Third War, the blue dragonflight was growing in numbers, but not fast enough. After Arthas invaded the kingdom of Quel'Thalas, costing the high elves their fabled Sunwell, the blue dragons felt a great flaring of power coming from Lordaeron. The Spell-Weaver, with no elders at his disposal, sent the young Kalecgos to investigate, followed by his intended mate Tyrygosa, who saved him from a Scourge ambush. Accompanied by a mysterious young woman, Anveena Teague, and a paladin they met at Tarren Mill, Jorad Mace,[41] the group journeyed to Quel'Thalas where, after being attacked by Dar'Khan Drathir and an enslaved Korialstrasz, they discovered Anveena was the new avatar of the Sunwell. After Dar'Khan was defeated, Anveena was left in the care of Lor'themar Theron and Halduron Brightwing, while Kalecgos remained in Quel'Thalas as Anveena's guardian.[42]
World of Warcraft
By the Year 25 ADP, Arygos, thought to have been lost during the War of the Shifting Sands, was found alive inside Ahn'Qiraj, but as a slave of C'Thun, along with Caelestrasz and Merithra. The blue dragon Andorgos came to Ahn'Qiraj after sensing his trapped brethren within, but dared not travel into the temple for fear of falling under the Old God's control.[43]
Azuregos and his brood of dragonspawn once guarded the ruins of the ancient night elven city of Eldarath in Azshara. The city was rumored to hold many powerful Highborne artifacts scattered throughout the ruins, and Azuregos would stop at nothing to safeguard these artifacts from falling into mortal hands.[29] At one point, he sought out for the Blue Scepter Shard, only to tell the adventurers that he had passed it along to an empowered minow ages ago to spare himself the hassle.[44]
The icy caverns of Mazthoril in Winterspring once teemed with blue dragonkin under the leadership of the Matron Protectorate Haleh, General Colbatann, and the drake-champion Scryer. These dragonkin were fierce enemies of the black dragonflight and desired to strike out against its new leaders; Nefarian and Onyxia. At one point, they came under attack by Nefarian's dragonriders, coming in the darkness of night, and kidnapping whelps, such as Awbee, to be used in experiments to create a new chromatic dragonflight.[45]
While the Dragon Aspects insisted that the flights should stay out of the affairs of mortals, Haleh could not obey such order when learned of the horrors committed to her kind, and thus tasked the adventurers to make sure that Nefarian and his chromatic dragonflight were destroyed.[46] When Onyxia's deception was uncovered, the Dragon's Eye she used was broken in the ensuing fight.[47] Using the blood of General Drakkisath, Haleh transformed the broken pendant into the Drakefire Amulet, which the Alliance heroes used to bypass the powerful wards protecting Onyxia's Lair and slay her.[48]
Nexus Point
After the reopening of the Dark Portal, Tyrygosa crossed through the portal in order to investigate the shattered world and the strange, mysterious nether dragons found there. She discovered, to her dismay, the nether dragons were the wayward nether-twisted spawn of Deathwing himself, and that they were being subjugated by the death knight Ragnok Bloodreaver.[49]
Following his defeat, Tyrygosa attempted to save the fading nether dragons by bringing them to Azeroth, specifically to the Nexus which she hopes to use to feed and stabilize the ethereal dragons. The nether dragons, however, gorged themselves and grew mad with power claiming they were magic incarnate, and proceeded to attack the blues. The mad slumbering Malygos heard this and awakened. Hearing the claims of the nether dragons, Malygos misinterpreted their reference to themselves as magic and decided to absorb the nether dragons into himself. This empowered Malygos and allowed him to finally shake off his millennia-long madness.[50]
Since that time, the blue dragons monitor the portal from their sanctum, and nothing crosses in or out without their knowledge.[51]
The Burning Crusade
During the invasion of Outland in 26 ADP, Tyrygosa, princess of the blue flight, returned to the shattered realm of Outland to study the mysterious nether dragons found at the Singing Ridge in the Netherstorm. She sought to better understand the rogue nether dragons under Veraku and ultimately helped them subdue the temperament inherited from their sire.[52][53] She planned to keep them safe and in check, as she had sworn herself to the noble task of safeguarding what remained of the nether brood after the tragic events at the Nexus.[54]
Kalecgos had until recently remained at Quel'Danas guarding Anveena. The return of the Sun King, Kael'thas Sunstrider, fresh from his defeat in Tempest Keep, brought the Burning Legion to Azeroth, which led Malygos to send Madrigosa to assist Kalecgos in combating the demonic horde. Inside Sunwell Plateau, Kalecgos had been enslaved by the Dreadlord Sathrovarr the Corruptor while Madrigosa fought the pit lord Brutallus until they received help from the adventurers.[55]
Night of the Dragon
A lone survivor, Zzeraku, overlooked by the blues was quickly captured by Sintharia and taken to Grim Batol to be used in her schemes to create the twilight dragon Dargonax. Kalecgos followed, ultimately meeting up with the red dragon Korialstrasz. Korialstrasz sensed something happening deep within the mountain and returned to Grim Batol to find the black consort in the midst of creating the twilight dragonflight. Ultimately, thanks to Korialstrasz's allies, the sacrifice of the nether dragon Zzeraku, and the anger felt by Dargonax towards his "mother", Sinestra and her creation were defeated. The mountain was once again abandoned, unaware to anyone that Deathwing lurked still deeper within.[56]
Wrath of the Lich King
When the Lich King awoke from his long dormancy, he journeyed to Sindragosa's Fall, where he raised Sindragosa into undeath as a mighty skeletal frost wyrm and ordered her to lead the Frostbrood into war.[57][58] The Lich King then tore the spirits of Sindragosa's lost whelps into undeath in front of her skeletal form as a final affront to the great dragon.[59][22]
During the war against the Lich King in 27 ADP, Sindragosa's Fall was crawling with Cult of the Damned acolytes and members who were raising more frost wyrms from the ice.[60] Later during the conflict, Sindragosa defended the Lich King in Icecrown Citadel until the adventurers who went on to slay him destroyed her as well, leaving only her skull behind. But rather than leave her to suffer again in some form, the adventurers took her crystalline essence to Wyrmrest Temple, where she could truly be laid to rest.[22]
Nexus War
- Main article: Nexus War
Having awoken from madness, Malygos assessed the state of magical affairs on Azeroth and concluded that magic had run amok, blaming the mortal races and their reckless pursuit of power. Determined to forestall a catastrophe, the Blue Aspect decreed that the world's unbridled magic had to be reined in, and decided to fix this problem his way, by imprisoning and destroying all mortal mages and by realigning the flow of magic to point toward Coldarra, where the Nexus gathered all this arcane energy.[6]
So Malygos turned to the Arcanomicon to locate the ley lines and tap into them using constructs called Surge needles, maneuvered into position over ley lines by his flight. He diverted these lines of energy that coursed beneath the earth, where they were focused through the Nexus' ascending rings and blasted into the Twisting Nether. However, this redirection carried disastrous consequences, splintering the world's crust and opening up unstable rifts.[27]
Malygos' siphoning of the world's magic did not go unnoticed. The Kirin Tor, elite magi of Dalaran, swore to fight Malygos to the bitter end, going as far as using their waning powers to transport their entire city to float above Northrend, though several members opted to side with the blue dragonflight becoming mage hunters.[27] Blue dragons, led by Cyanigosa, launched an offensive against the city. Their initial onslaught nearly succeeded in breaking through the shield, but the magi of Dalaran were able to hold the spell, unaware that Cyanigosa had an agent on the inside. The mage hunter Crevan had allowed himself to be captured, and when the opportune moment arose he manipulated his nephew, the apprentice Aodhan, into freeing him. Crevan released the prisoners of the Violet Hold in hopes the distraction would work to Cyanigosa's advantage. The blue dragons pressed forward while Crevan attempted to bring the city down - literally - from inside, but Aodhan managed to outwit him long enough to stop him. The Kirin Tor, free from any distractions, were able to strengthen the shield and force the blue dragons to abandon the attack.[61]
With the Nexus War in full swing, the blue dragonflight spread outward from Coldarra into the neighboring regions of the Borean Tundra, such as Beryl Point and the Coldrock Quarry. Coldarra bustled with activity as the blue flight hatched and trained drakes for the war, supervised by Malygos's last remaining consort, Saragosa. The blue dragon Eregos and his minions watched over the Oculus, while Malygos himself spent his time coordinating his war from inside the Eye of Eternity.[62]
In time, the blue dragonflight had diverted much of the ley lines' energy to the Azure Dragonshrine in the Dragonblight, empowering the flight and altering their appearance. With this power, the blue flight boldly began to launch attacks against Wyrmrest Temple, which was once considered neutral ground. The Wyrmrest Accord fought to defend the temple against their misguided brethren.[63] In Crystalsong Forest, an army of blue dragonkin, assisted by mage hunters, could be found in the close vicinity of Dalaran, daring to strike at the city. A significant force, led by Cyanigosa, even managed to break into the Violet Hold, the city's prison, and freed several inmates in hopes of creating chaos in the streets of Dalaran. Later on, an ambassador of the Blue Dragonflight, Kalecgos, could be found at the top of the Wyrmrest Temple, who assisted adventurers seeking the draconic sword Quel'Delar.
The blues' increasingly militaristic methods were condemned by the red dragonflight, who vowed to neutralize Malygos at all costs. To this end, they formed a council with the Kirin Tor, and the two groups began actively subverting Malygos's devastating campaign.[27] When the blues dared attack Wyrmrest Temple, the reds called upon the remaining dragonflights for assistance, creating the Wyrmrest Accord.[63] Once again dragon fought against dragon. Alexstrsza and the other Aspects saw no way to end the senseless violence other than destroying Malygos. But the Blue Aspect proved elusive[62] until a key to the Eye of Eternity was found on the remains of the frost wyrm Sapphiron, a former servant of Malygos. The Spellweaver was finally confronted in his realm, where he was slain by members of the Accord.[64] The blue dragonflight had been then left without an Aspect.[64]
Cataclysm era
Following the Cataclysm in 28 ADP, Kalecgos traveled to Bilgewater Harbor in Azshara in search of a fellow blue dragon. The black dragonflight sought to rout out the last remaining blues and invaded the area to hunt down Azuregos. With the help of the heroes, Kalecgos managed to convince Azuregos to come out of hiding and assist him in repelling the invasion.[65]
In Winterspring, the caverns of Mazthoril were magically corrupted, and creatures from all dimensions made their way inside.[66] Some of the blue dragons and dragonspawn there were also slain by Umbranse the Spiritspeaker who was after their powerful essences. Matron Haleh managed to escape to the Beryl Egress[67] and tasked heroes to kill Umbranse.[68] Her son Nymn could be found in Everlook recruiting assistance in getting precisely that done.[69]
In the meantime, the blue dragonflight faced a crisis that no other dragon in the world had faced before: the loss of an Aspect. Research indicated that one could be empowered during the Embrace, and the two major candidates for the position were Kalecgos and Arygos, son of Malygos. Arygos believed that his kind should withdraw from the world and forge a new path, while Kalecgos champions reconciliation with other races. In the end, Arygos betrayed his people to Deathwing for the promise of achieving the position, however, during the Embrace at Coldarra, his plan was thwarted and revealed to the rest of the flight when Tarecgosa sacrificed herself to save Kalecgos. The flight ultimately elected Kalecgos as their new leader.[70]
By the end of the war against Deathwing in 29 ADP, Kalecgos worked alongside the other Aspects in the final battle against the Black Aspect, using his new power to rewrite the Dragon Soul's magic and allow it to harm the Aspect of Death. At the end of the fighting, the Aspects became mortal, and Dragon Queen Alexstrasza declared that the Age of Mortals had began.[71]
Tides of War
In Year 30 ADP, deciding that the The Focusing Iris needed to be placed somewhere safe, a squad of blue dragons led by Veragos began to escort it from the Eye of Eternity to the depths of Azeroth's ocean. However, agents of the Horde killed the entire squad and stole the artifact.[72] Kalecgos went out searching for it because of his former position as Aspect, but was unable to discover its location until the artifact was used to empower the mana bomb that destroyed Theramore.[73] Because of their diminished numbers, first from Deathwing, then the Nexus War, and finally the Cataclysm, the blue dragonflight decided to go their separate ways. The few remaining blue dragons ultimately scattered across the world, no longer affiliated with any organization.[74]
Dawn of the Aspects
With Nexus abandoned, only few individuals remained to check the Nexus, such as Kalecgos and Jaracgos. Even though the Aspects had worked together to defeat Deathwing, they didn't want to continue with the Wyrmrest Accord, despite Kalec trying to show them the importance of this draconic alliance. When they decided to officially dissolve the Accord at their next meeting, Kalec summoned them sooner and used the Spark of Tyr to remind them of the time when they had been merely proto-dragons, as well as their battle against Galakrond together. This attempt was strongly criticized by the former Aspects, but it managed to give them the will to continue to protect Azeroth by fighting together, which avoided the official dissolution of the Accord.[75]
Legion
During the third invasion of the Burning Legion in 32 ADP, Lanigosa aided a paladin adventurer to retrieve a Spark of Tyr and fight the cursed titan keeper Jotun. Meanwhile, Azuregos returned to the Nexus, however, he was captured by the Ethereum as they sought to acquire control over the artifacts within the Nexus Vault. A mage and a priest adventurer freed him at Kalec's behest and, banding together, defeated Nexus-Prince Bilaal and his followers. Azuregos stayed behind to secure the Nexus so it would not fall into the wrong hands again and said to give his regards to Kalecgos.
The Azurewing, a remaining brood of blue dragons led by Senegos, had made their home in Azsuna on the Broken Isles. As possibly the oldest blue dragon alive, Senegos claimed that the dragons could no longer bear eggs, threatening the very existence of the flight[76] They soon came under attack by the Nightfallen, who sought to drain the mana from the dragons to feed their magic addiction. They later assisted in defending Azsuna against the demons during the Legion Assaults.
Battle for Azeroth
During the Black Empire Campaign in 34 ADP, Kalecgos journeyed to the Chamber of Heart where he joined with Alexstrasza, Ebyssian, Merithra, and Chronormu in empowering the Heart of Azeroth to save the world.[77]
Exploring Azeroth
Following the armistice, Zekhan reported that he knew the blue dragonflight dragons went their separate ways, but seeing Lake Mennar after the Fourth War made him think otherwise. Malynea Skyreaver explained to them that a Sarcen Stone was drawing them to the area.[78] According to a goblin from Winterspring, the blue dragons were still present in the Mazthoril caves.[79]
Dragonflight
| This section is a lore stub. |
20,000 years ago, Malygos had placed a contingent of blue dragons and drakonid on the Forbidden Reach to watch over the slumbering dracthyr. These dragons had been on the island for all that time and were unaware that Malygos was dead. After the events of the dracthyr starting zone, the drakonid joined the Healing Wings.
When the Dragon Isles reawakened in 40 ADP, all dragonflights, including the blues, traveled to them. In the Azure Span, Kalecgos traveled alone to reignite the flight's Azure Oathstone. When he met a simulacrum of Sindragosa, she asked him where the rest of the flight was, and Kalec explained how the flight was disbanded and they had all gone their separate ways. After spending some time with the local tuskarr and seeing how they celebrated the lives of the dead instead of mourning them, Kalec put out a magical call to any blue dragons who were listening to gather at the Azure Span.[80] The Azurewing dragons arrived just in time to save Kalecgos from Raszageth,[81] and as Kalec restored the Azure Oathstone he declared the blue dragonflight - his family - renewed.[1] Afterward, many blue dragons could be seen in the skies of the Azure Span.[82]
While many blue dragons had returned, and others had informed Kalec of their intentions to make their way to the isles, some members of the flight remained unaccounted for.[83] After aiding Azuregos, he created a Dragon Locator to help discover where the flight's missing members were.[84] Adventures were subsequently sent to aid the missing dragons and while most of them decided to join the rest of their flight, Kirygosa declined because she was truly happy in Dawn's Blossom.[85]
As the blue dragonflight realized that the violent deaths of Malygos and Sindragosa experienced had left them stranded in their final moments, they recovered their essences and brought them back to the Azure Archives.[86] Working together as one, the blue dragonflight used the arcane energy within the Azure Archives to break the loop of death that Malygos and Sindragosa had found themselves trapped in, and watched as Kalecgos and adventures clashed with them before they pair were properly soothed and released from their torment, and then watched as the spirits peacefully passed on to the afterlife.[87] In the aftermath, Senegos decided that the time had come for his long life to end at last, and the blue dragonflight watched as he gave one last flight. When Stellagosa asked what they were to do now, Kale responded that they would strengthen the bonds of their flight by celebrating all those who came before and that the Archives were their new home.[88]
When the Primalists invaded the Emerald Dream, the blue dragonflight arrived to help the Dream Wardens defend Amirdrassil from Fyrakk the Blazing.[89] The blued dragons were among the allies who fought against Fyrakk's forces in the battle before the Temple Wellspring.[90] After the Blazing's death, Azeroth herself blessed the Aspects, restoring the Aspectral powers of Kalecgos.[91] Alongside his fellow Aspects, Kalecgos later formally thanked Azeroth's champions for all they've done for dragonkind and named them Champion of the Dragonflights.[92]
The War Within
In Year 42 ADP, after the destruction of Dalaran by Xal'atath, Kalecgos flew to Khaz Algar to assist the survivors. He met up with Aethas Sunreaver and an adventurer to establish an outpost in the Tranquil Strand.[93] He and the adventurer scoured the land for Dalaran's scattered artifacts, while his mirror images tended to Aethas.[94] After gathering the artifacts, Kalec and the Kirin Tor gave a send-off to honor those who died in the crash. In the aftermath, Kalec decided to stay and help them for a while, believing the Dragon Isles would be fine without him for a bit.[95]
During the war on K'aresh, the Azure Vault came under attack by the Shadowguard, who abducted several blue dragons, draining their essence to replace it with their own tainted energies, in order to turn them into void dragons. The blue dragonflight actively fought against the void ethereals attempting to pilfer the vault, aided by Brann Bronzebeard and adventurers who delved into the Shadowguard's portals to stop them. At the request of Xeronia, the heroes also saved some of the Siphoned Drakes and destroyed those who fell to the whispers.[96]

In Warcraft III
Background: The blue dragonflight, while ruled by Malygos, the lord of magic, was all but devastated by the evil Deathwing and his black dragonflight. Though there are few great blue dragons left in the world, their magical powers are awesome to behold. Native to Northrend, the few blues stay relatively close to the great Dragonblight, where they commune with the ancient dragon spirits who died in ages past. Their freezing breath and gargantuan claws have been the death of many hapless travelers in Northrend.[97]
Warcraft Adventures: Lord of the Clans
In the canceled Warcraft Adventures, a member of the blue dragonflight was to appear for the first time ever. His role is still unknown.
Notes
- A sole blue dragon is known to have been a part of the Council of Tirisfal.
- The blue dragonflight, or at the very least Stellagosa, are capable of seeing the ley lines even while the lines are underground.[98]
