The Boulderfist clan is a clan[1] (or a tribe)[2] of ogres that live throughout the Arathi Highlands in Azeroth and Nagrand in Outland.

Their main bases on Azeroth include Boulder'gor and Boulderfist Hall; they also controlled a significant portion of Stromgarde Keep before its retaking by Alliance forces.

On Outland, a large contingent of Boulderfist ogres roam throughout Nagrand (clefts of Halaa, Burning Blade Ruins, and the hills northwest of Kil'sorrow Fortress) and parts of Terokkar Forest (Bleeding Hollow Ruins). Their leader is a half-orc half-draenei named Lantresor of the Blade. A six-part quest chain involves Lantresor and either the Telaar or Mag'har settlement, depending on the player character's faction.

History

During the forming of the Old Horde, the Blackrock orcs captured three members of Krol's clan and convinced them to hold council with their leader. Krol, promised protection from the gronn, as well as a new "enemy" called the draenei in which to kill, quickly agreed and formed an alliance with Orgrim Doomhammer, who had been sent there by Blackhand.[3] Krol then joined the Old Horde with his followers.[4]

Parts of the Boulderfists crossed the Dark Portal before or during the Second War and started living in the Arathi Highlands ever since.[5]

World of Warcraft

Following the Third War, Stromgarde Keep fell into ruin and became a battlefield between the remaining humans of Stromgarde, the Boulderfist ogres, and the criminals of the Syndicate.[6][7] Meanwhile the clan had allied with the Witherbark tribe in order to order to wipe out the Horde forces who have constructed the settlement of Hammerfall.[8] The Boulderfist also appear to have positive relations with the Crushridge clan as Or'Kalar, who leads the Boulderfist forces in Stromgarde, is said to answer to Mug'thol.[9]

Skuerto sent Alliance champions to Boulderfist Hall to retrieve  [Trelane's Wand of Invocation] from Kor'gresh Coldrage,[10] and with attacking the Boulderfist at the Tower of Arathor within the Stromgarde to claim an  [Azure Agate].[11]

Fearing Hammerfalls' demise Tallow recruited Horde champions to strike against the ogres at Boulder'gor.[12] Following their success, Drum Fel had them press the attack by striking at the Boulderfist within Boulderfist Hall,[13] and even within Stromgarde itself.[14]

The Burning Crusade

After the destruction of Draenor, the Boulderfists who had remained on the planet settled in Nagrand, and had dominion over all ogres in the new Outland. At an unknown point before the Invasion of Outland, Krol mysteriously went missing and the cunning half-orc Lantresor of the Blade stepped forward and took leadership of the clan. The Boulderfist found themselves losing ground against the Warmaul, which in turn spurred them to take over territory such as the village that belonged to the Bleeding Hollow clan.[4] They also planned for an assault on Telaar.[15]

In time Jorin Deadeye and Mo'mor the Breaker sent adventurers of the Horde and Alliance against the Boulderfist before sending them on a diplomatic mission to peacefully end the attacks on their holdings by speaking with Lantresor. After a short conversation the blademaster and the envoy came to an agreement to help one another.[16] Thus, at Lantresor's direction, the envoy attacked the Kil'sorrow clan at Kil'sorrow Fortress and planted Warmaul banners, framing the ogres as the attackers, while also having them strike at the Warmaul and plant Kil'sorrow banners framing the orcs for the attack.[17][18]

With the Warmaul and Kil'sorrow now locked in conflict against one another, Lantresor declared that the envoy had saved his clan from extermination. He subsequently sent the envoy back to their people, with the message that "Lantresor of the Burning Blade and his Boulderfist ogres accept the offering of peace."[19][20]

Cataclysm

Following the Cataclysm, the Forsaken made war against the Boulderfist, seeking to claim the Arathi Highlands for Sylvanas Windrunner.[21] Both the Alliance and Horde champions were tasked with battling with the Boulderfist within Stromgarde, with the Alliance striking at the ogres within the Tower of Arathor, while the Horde killed their leader Or'Kalar.[22][23]

Some time before the third invasion of the Burning Legion, the Boulderfist within Stromgarde were successfully driven from the city by Galen Trollbane and his forces.[24]

By the time of the Fourth War, Boulderfist Hall had been expanded out into the surrounding hills and fortified it better. Their alliance with the Witherbark tribe appears to have fallen apart, as members of the tribe can be found in the ogre den's cages.

According to Druza Netherfang, the Boulderfist refused to join the Horde.[25]

As the factions fought for control of the region during the Battle for Stromgarde, they made war against the Boulderfist.[26]

War Within

By the time of the Bronze Celebration, Lantressor was still in charge of the Boulderfist in Outland. He mentioned that his ogres were not ready to change as the Horde and Burning Blade clan had.[27]

Culture

  • Preferring to show off their physique, ogres eschew garments that cover too much skin. In order to look more fearsome to their enemies, they adorn their bodies with warpaints created in these grinding tools. The Boulderfist clan favors yellow.[28]
  • Boulderfist legend recounts a cloud of carrion birds following ogre warriors through the Dark Portal during the Second War; it may be that all two-headed scavengers in Azeroth are their descendants.[29]

Notes and trivia

  • Rise of the Horde never mentioned that Krol was a member of the Boulderfist clan. It was the H [15-30] Success! quest which explained it.
  • Though unseen, the Boulderfist clan also exists on alternate Draenor, where it is said that the first great technological innovation in ogre society was the concept of attaching a rock to the end of a very long stick to smash your enemies, rather than attempting to bash them with a rock held in your hand. The schism this innovation created amongst ogre society resolved itself only when a now-forgotten tribe broke into the Warmaul and Boulderfist clans.[30]
  • One of the realms in World of Warcraft is named after the Boulderfist clan.
