Meryl Felstorm[1] (previously known as Meryl Winterstorm) is an ancient undead human sorcerer.[2] He is an incredibly powerful magic user, with nearly three thousand years of experience, whose purpose has always been the protection of Azeroth.[3] He was a founding member of the Council of Tirisfal,[3][4] and is the foster father and mentor of Med'an, son of Garona Halforcen and Medivh.
Biography
Troll Wars
It is known that Meryl fought in the Troll Wars, presumably making him one of the original One Hundred of Empire of Arathor. He was mortally wounded during the wars, but couldn't let himself remain dead, as too many lives depended on the completion of his mission. Through his magic, he became undead. As such, he is neither one of the Forsaken nor Scourge, having been undead for roughly 2,800 years. Alodi and Aegwynn both regarded him as a great hero.[3][5]
Over a century after the Troll Wars, Meryl became one of the founding members of the now defunct Council of Tirisfal[3][4] and came to reside in Dalaran.
The First Guardian

2,610 years before the First War, the nathrezim Kathra'natir infiltrated Dalaran's vaults, intending to steal the Amulet of Waters. Meryl met with Indus to discuss the threat and suggested using the amulet as bait for the demon. During the discussion, a fight broke out between the students Alodi and Nallorath, which Meryl contributed to the dark presence of the demon, among others. Meryl and the rest of the Council of Tirisfal successfully trapped Kathra'natir in a vault beneath the Violet Citadel. Aertin Brighthand acted as the Council's Spearhead, and when the Council members empowered him to destroy the nathrezim, Kathra'natir successfully broke out from the trapping circle to the upper level with students, but they quickly resumed their fight. Kathra'natir bested Meryl and the remaining members and killed Aertin. Alodi stood up to the demon too, and the protective shield Aertin had used on him left the two defeated. Meryl then visited the recuperating Alodi, briefly explained what had happened, and offered him the position to research spells in the Citadel, taking Alodi as an apprentice, devising spells.
Meryl then attended a Council meeting in Venomweb Vale, where he pointed out that Kathra'natir could use the amulet to corrupt Lordamere Lake and the rest of Arathor. The Council began arguing about their next steps and the future of the Spearhead position, and Meryl suggested approaching Alodi due to the feat he had achieved during the fight through his magical abilities. True to the warnings, Kathra'natir did corrupt the lake, conjuring monsters into it. Meryl and the other members then proceeded to get rid of the taint. Later, Meryl and the others went to confront Kathra'natir, but it brought only more casualties. With Ethylar's death, Meryl pleaded once more to use a champion, and the remaining members agreed to work with Alodi. Meryl came back to Dalaran to fetch Alodi and bring him back to Tirisfal Glades, where they revealed to him the truth about the Council of Tirisfal and asked him to become their Spearhead. After thinking of it, Alodi eventually agreed, but proposed a change. Instead of being their Spearhead, he would be their Guardian through a spell that Meryl Alodi devised together. Their work allowed the Guardian to engage the enemy with the Council's power and safety intact.[6]
Their spell would later be applied to a device known as the Forge of the Guardian, which was used to create all Guardians from that day on, until the day Aegwynn refused to return her power.[4]
The Comic
At an unknown point in time, Meryl befriended the half-orc Garona. After Garona was forced to murder King Llane at the end of the First War, she asked Meryl to take care of her infant son, Med'an, as she believed herself to be a danger to him. She told Meryl to never tell Med'an about his parentage,[2] and she refused to name the boy's father.[3] She also asked Meryl to hide away her daggers, Anguish and Sorrow, in the hopes that they'd never have to be used again.[7][8] Meryl went on to raise Med'an like his own son, teaching him that the strong should aid the weak and that, above all, truth matters.[3]
Years later, when Med'an witnessed his mother being kidnapped by the Twilight's Hammer, he chased after her. When Meryl discovered it, he quickly flew after him, arriving in Theramore just in time to warn the island of an approaching Scourge Necropolis. After fighting off the Scourge, he discovered that Med'an's father was Medivh, and along with Valeera Sanguinar he traveled to Ahn'Qiraj, where Med'an was held as a prisoner. They managed to save Med'an but before they were able to leave, they were intercepted by Cho'gall who had knocked Meryl out with his incredible power. Valeera tried to fend off Cho'gall while Med'an tried to revive Meryl, but Cho'gall was too strong and growing more desperate, Valeera offered herself willingly to the demon within her body in order to obtain the power to fend off Cho'gall. This allowed Meryl enough time to recover and teleport them to safety. When they reached a secure location, Meryl discovered that the demon that had possessed Valeera was none other than Kathra'natir, a demon whom he and the original Council of Tirisfal banished centuries ago. In order to lure the demon away from Valeera's body, he challenged the demon to possess his body instead and being the stronger of the two wills managed to repress the demon in his body.
Though he tried to contain Kathra'natir, his will eventually faltered during the New Council of Tirisfal's offensive on Cho'gall and his Twilight's Hammer Cult. Having lost control, the demon was able to slay the blood elf Dalynnia Wrathscar and drain her of her power before Meryl got him back under control. Recognizing that his demonic possession was a liability to those around him, he declined membership in the New Council of Tirisfal and left in self-imposed exile, renaming himself Meryl Felstorm as a sign of his corruption.[1]
Interlude
Meryl was later seen in various ancient libraries researching ancient tomes related to binding, imprisoning, and banishing demons, in hopes that he might one day find a permanent prison for Kathra'natir.[9]
Legion
“Mages of Azeroth! I have summoned you here because we face a threat to the future of the world itself!”
- — Meryl to the reformed Tirisgarde[10]
Despite Meryl's best efforts to subdue Kathra'natir, the demon managed to break free and attacked the Violet Hold in Dalaran.[11] With the aid of a mage adventurer and the spirit of his old student, Alodi, Meryl fought Kathra'natir off, but the nathrezim escaped into the Twisting Nether before he could be killed. Meryl and Alodi gathered the Forge of the Guardian and brought it to the Hall of the Guardian.[12]
In order to obtain Aluneth, which was last wielded by the Guardian of Tirisfal Aegwynn, Meryl told the mage champion to meet with Kalecgos to recover the Ancient Scrolls of Meitre while he was tidying up the Hall of the Guardian in Dalaran.[13]
After they discovered that the staff Ebonchill was wielded by the man'ari eredar Balaadur, Meryl suggested that they should recreate Arrexis's ritual to draw out Balaadur to get Ebonchill back.[14] He tasked the mage adventurer to obtain the [Ritual Focusing Crystal] in Deadwind Pass and the
[Demon Stone] from Daio the Decrepit.[15][16] When Alodi recovered his gems from his personal vault in Dalaran, he wondered about his old acquaintance, Glutonia, to which Meryl simply replied that the entity was now a goblin.[17] The ritual eventually took place in Faronaar in Azsuna, where the mages eventually defeated the demon and recovered the artifact.[18]
Within the Hall, Meryl later asked the mage adventurer to find a goblin named The Great Akazamzarak to summon mages around Azeroth to come together. Once reunited, he reformed the Tirisgarde, an order of magi used by the Council of Tirisfal in the absence of the Guardian, and declared that their mission was to hunt Kathra'natir down and defeat the Legion.[10]
At some point, Meryl caught a magical sickness marked with violent coughs that forced him out of commission.[19][20] It was revealed to be a magical attack of fel origin, which originated from Kathra'natir himself who used the Nightborne Soulstone and the power of the Nexus to drain Meryl's power. Once the demon was imprisoned within the soulstone, Meryl was saved.[21]
He was later one of the order hall champions who met Khadgar and Velen at Krasus' Landing to discuss the Pillars of Creation.[22] After the Legion sabotaged the tallest spire atop the Violet Citadel, which was revealed to be a weapon used for the defense of the city and offense against its enemies, Aethas Sunreaver called for the help of the Tirisgarde.[23][24] Together, Meryl and his allies channeled a spell to the Nightborne Soulstone, forcing the Nighborne Construct Progenitor and Kathra'natir's soul to join together.[25] When the process was over, the soulstone was taken to Dalaran Spire and was used by harnessing the dreadlord's energies to defend Dalaran by channeling the power to Dalaran Crystals.[26]
The War Within
After Dalaran's destruction, Meryl was holding a portal and summoning Arcane Elementals in the Tranquil Strand on the Isle of Dorn, sending them against nerubians.
Meryl was amongst the mages that responded to Aethas Sunreaver's letter for aid and journeyed to the Tranquil Strand. He admitted that despite seeing ages of tragedies, it didn't make Dalaran's fall easier to witness, but vowed to help where he could.[27] After the Kirin Tor gathered to pay homage to the victims of the destruction of Dalaran on the Isle of Dorn, Khadgar and Jaina proclaimed to start over with no council or rank. The mages would return to investigating, training, and advising, while being mobile and decentralized, with Jaina, Meryl, and Aethas as key figures.[28]

Quotes
The Comic
- It has taken you three thousand years to slip back into Azeroth...only to inhabit an elf child's frail shell. And even this boy has withstood both your blandishments and your attack. You have not the magic to conjure your own demon body...much less to confront that other darkness.[29]
- We will use the injured gryphon's life force to power our fel magic. The poor creature is nearly dead, anyways.[30]

Gossip
[10-45] The Dreadlord's Prize
- We must make haste to the Violet Hold!
- Kathra'natir must not be allowed access to the Forge of the Guardian!
What is the Forge of the Guardian?
- The Forge of the Guardian is an artifact of incredible power.
- It was devised by the Archmage Alodi as a method of permanently transferring the arcane power of many mages into the body of one, thus creating a Guardian of Tirisfal.
- The last time it was used was in the time of Aegwynn. Since she refused to return her powers so another Guardian could be imbued, the forge was locked away behind the arcane barriers of the Violet Hold.
- Its location was known only to the Council. That is, until now.
Wait, who are you again?
- Pardon me, I forget that my name is not well known these days.
- I am Meryl Felstorm, once known as Meryl Winterstorm. I was a founding member of the Council of Tirisfal, but was required to abandon my duties when I became possessed by the dreadlord Kathra'natir. I was able to contain him... for the most part... but the risk was too great for me to remain on the council.
- I have since dedicated my life to finding a way to banish the demon once and for all. It seems I have failed.
[10-45] Finding Ebonchill
- Any information you can find on Arrexis, how he died, and the whereabouts of
[Ebonchill] would be greatly appreciated.
Can you tell me more about Arrexis?
- Arrexis was a powerful and well known member of the Order of Tirisfal around the First War. I barely spoke to him, busy with my own goals. I knew he wielded Ebonchill. Then, mysteriously, I returned from a long journey and he was gone. His apprentices were gone and any materials and belongings related to him. The other members of the order were very tightlipped, only saying that something horrible had befallen him.
- Ebonchill was nowhere to be found.
Hall of the Guardian

- Later
- The dreadlord Kathra'natir is defeated, but only for now. If we wish to save Azeroth from his evil, we must reform the Tirisgarde.
- Then we can hunt him down in the Twisting Nether before he has a chance to share his secrets with the Burning Legion
- Meryl's sickness
- You are living up to your reputation, <name>. Thank you for handling my duties while I am indisposed.

- Meryl is voiced by Fred Tatasciore in Legion.
- As a Class Hall champion, Meryl wields a
[Primal Combatant's Energy Staff].
- Meryl's first ever appearance was as an undead warlock featured in DC Unlimited's World of Warcraft: Series 1 action figure set. He was wearing the Corruptor Raiment set.
- In World of Warcraft: The Magazine Volume I Issue III, the DC catalog description reads: "Meryl Felstorm was once a human sorcerer known as Meryl Winterstorm, but now "lives on" as an undead Warlock. Nearly 3,000 years of experience have bestowed immeasurable power upon him."[32]
