“Mages of Azeroth! I have summoned you here because we face a threat to the future of the world itself!”

Meryl Felstorm[2]

The Tirisgarde is an order[3] of mages acting as the elite mage-guard of the Magocracy of Dalaran. They were called upon in the past by the Council of Tirisfal to protect Azeroth in the absence of the Guardian.[4][5] Created to hunt down Aegwynn after she went rogue,[6] the foundation of the Tirisgarde's strength lies in the ancient artifacts wielded by its champions, rather than empowering them directly like the Guardian was.[4] The organization eventually came to an end at the time of the First War, when all its members were slaughtered by Medivh, who was then possessed by the dark titan Sargeras.

Decades later, during the third invasion of the Burning Legion, the Tirisgarde was reformed by Meryl Felstorm and the Conjuror of the Tirisgarde, recruiting into its ranks among the most talented and worthy mages across the world, including prestigious members from the Kirin Tor and the Magisters. From their order hall in Dalaran, the Hall of the Guardian, the Tirisgarde fought and succeeded in capturing the dreadlord Kathra'natir, before joining the battle against the Burning Legion alongside the other class orders, united as the Armies of Legionfall.

History

Founding

See also: Council of Tirisfal

Six hundred years before the opening of the Dark Portal, after one of Aegwynn's rare visits to Dalaran where the Council demanded that she step down as Guardian or face immediate consequences, the council members agreed among themselves to take action against the Guardian after she refused. Aegwynn told the magi that putting the fate of Azeroth in their hands was tantamount to dooming the world because she grew suspicious of the order and believed that the council was abusing its power by manipulating the politics of the human kingdoms.

If the Guardian would not give up her powers voluntarily, they would force her to do so. The Council long debated how best to accomplish this. Some members proposed empowering a new Guardian, but this idea presented too many dangerous possibilities. If Aegwynn and another Guardian were to do battle, the results could be disastrous for the world. Of even greater concern was that such a conflict would call public attention to their clandestine order.[6]

Ultimately, the council agreed on a more subtle course of action. They formed the Tirisgarde, an order of magi girded with relics and armaments that could diminish the Guardian's incredible powers, considered as the elite mage-guard of Dalaran.[4] After years of training, these resourceful and gifted hunters set out to find Aegwynn and bring her back to Dalaran. The Guardian eluded many of the Tirisgarde with ease. However, the hunters did succeed in finding Karazhan and reporting its location back to the council.[7]

Around 45 years BDP, the Council of Tirisfal still continued its tireless hunt for the renegade Guardian. Waves of unflagging Tirisgarde scoured the world to find Aegwynn and hold her accountable for her defiance. Among them was Nielas Aran, who shared the same stance as Aegwynn regarding the Council of Tirisfal, and who ends up joining her to help her give birth to a new Guardian, free from the manipulations of the Council, that they named Medivh.[8]

During the time of the First War, Medivh, possessed by Sargeras, killed many named and unnamed members of the Order of Tirisfal and the Tirisgarde throughout Azeroth, with the specific purpose of breaking the chain, ending the existence of both organizations before being killed.[9]

Following the Battle for Broken Shore, Meryl Felstorm met a mage hero at the Violet Gate and revealed his failure to banish the demon Kathra'natir, who escaped with secret knowledge on the Council of Tirisfal.[10] The duo chased after the nathrezim inside the Violet Hold, where he was siphoning off the power of the Forge of the Guardian, the source of great power used by the Council to create the Guardian of Tirisfal. During the battle, Kathra'natir proved to be far too strong, forcing the mage hero to siphon the Forge's power to defeat him. Despite their victory, Meryl knew Kathra'natir would soon return from the Twisting Nether and decided to reform the Tirisgarde as they moved the Forge to the Hall of the Guardian, where it would be safe from the Burning Legion.[4]

As the foundation of the Tirisgarde's strength lies in the ancient artifacts wielded by its champions, Meryl tasked the mage hero to recover several legendary artifacts, including  [Aluneth],  [Felo'melorn], and  [Ebonchill], whose stories and information were recorded in the Archive of the Tirisgarde.[11] After they successfully recovered them, the mage hero used the Forge of the Guardian as a font of arcane energy to manipulate and empower his artifacts, then starting to recruit other mages along with Meryl to serve their cause.[12]

With the help of The Great Akazamzarak, a goblin master in portals and teleportation, they forcefully bypassed the protective wards surrounding the Hall of the Guardian.[13] Once inside, Akazamzarak opened eight portals at once to the Exodar, Ironforge, four to Dalaran, Orgrimmar, and the Borean Tundra, from which respectively came a great number of mages. Meryl then explained that he had summoned them to defeat once and for all Kathra'natir and put an end to the Legion's invasion.[2] After the assembly approved, Meryl announced that the Tirisgarde was now reformed and that in presence of many of Azeroth's greatest mages, it was an honor to dub the mage hero as the Conjuror of the Tirisgarde, an ancient title who symbolizes the awesome responsibility borne by their order.[14]

The Conjuror of the Tirisgarde and their fellow mages.

During the Burning Legion's third invasion, the Tirisgarde mobilized their mages on the Broken Isles, where they notably rescued the well-respected archivist Chronicler Elrianne.[15] Subsequently, they organized the recruitment of champions, especially Archmage Modera and Archmage Kalec,[16][17] and the recruitment of troops such as Water elementals and Arcane Golems made by Archmage Omniara,[18] the Tirisgarde Apprentices and Kirin Tor Invokers formed by Grand Conjurer Mimic,[19] and finally the Kirin Tor Guardians recruited by Guardian Alar.

As the Broken Isles was the epicenter of ancient night elven learning, the Tirisgarde was sent to secure countless magical artifacts secreted away in forgotten vaults and reliquaries, at the request of Archmage Vargoth, before they fell into the wrong hands.[20] Later, Vargoth's long-time apprentice, Ravandwyr, arrived with an urgent message from his mentor who found some sort of powerful magic emanating from the secretive Empyrean Society Enclave in Azsuna.[21] After they discovered their use of fel magic,[22][23] the Conjuror of the Tirisgarde reduced their number and learned that Vargoth was somehow involved with the cult.[24] When they returned to the Hall, Archmage Khadgar revealed that Meryl had been affected by a disease of magical nature.[25]

Following a meeting of the Council of Six,[26] the Tirisgarde and the Kirin Tor investigated Vargoth's quarters, where they discovered his researches on the  [Nightborne Soulstone].[27] As Vargoth entered the Arcway Vaults in Suramar,[28] the Tirisgarde agents were unable to follow him due to the heavy Legion presence around it. With the help of Kalecgos and Millhouse Manastorm,[29][30] the Conjuror of the Tirisgarde and Kalec were able to prove that Vargoth had been corrupted by the Legion.[31][32] Millhouse Manastorm later joined the Tirisgarde for his personal interests.[33]

While the Conjuror recovered a vial of water from the Wrath of Azshara to sustain Meryl's dire condition,[34] the Tirisgarde discovered that the Oculus had fallen to the Legion and subsequently sent troops to find a way to penetrate their heavy defenses.[35] Within the Oculus, the Conjuror of the Tirisgarde defeated the demons on their way until they faced Vargoth. After his defeat, the Archmage explained that he had never betrayed Dalaran, but was in fact betrayed by the Empyrean Society and fell into the clutches of Kathra'natir who made him his puppet, using the Nightborne Soulstone to drain Meryl of his power. With the help of Vargoth, Khadgar, Kalec, and Modera, the Conjuror ultimately defeated the dreadlord and locked him in the soulstone,[36] which later served to fuel Dalaran's weapons and defenses against the Legion with the help of Aethas Sunreaver.[37][38] Archmage Vargoth then entered the ranks of the Tirisgarde to thank the Conjuror for saving his reputation and his life.[39]

During the Battle for the Exodar, Archmage Modera and Kalecgos helped the Conjuror in repelling High General Rakeesh and the Legion forces out of the draenei capital.[40]

Legionfall

Following their victory, the Tirisgarde joined the other orders, represented by Meryl Felstorm,[41] to form the Armies of Legionfall. Their mages were present to repel the legion's assault on Dalaran and to fight alongside their allies during the Assault on Broken Shore. In retaliation, the Legion sabotaged the tallest spire atop the Violet Citadel, which was revealed to be a weapon used for the defense of the city and offense against its enemies. Since the traitor had come from the ranks of the Sunreavers, its leader Aethas Sunreaver moved to set the matter right with the help of the Tirisgarde.[42][43] Together, they channeled a spell to the Nightborne Soulstone, forcing the Nighborne Construct Progenitor and Kathra'natir's soul to join together.[44] When the process was over, the soulstone was taken to Dalaran Spire and was used by harnessing the dreadlord's energies to defend Dalaran by channeling the power to Dalaran Crystals.[45]

For their many exploits, the Conjuror of the Tirisgarde obtained the title of Archmage from Khadgar,[46] and later the [Archmage's Prismatic Disc] created from the plans left by Grand Magus Antonidas.[47]

The Tirisgarde mages were later present on Argus, accompanying the Conjuror of the Tirisgarde to fight the demons and protect the Vindicaar.

After the Fourth War, the Tirisgarde made its appearance in the mage section of the Training Hall in Stormwind and the Barracks in Orgrimmar, with Frazzle Frostfingers, Azunla, and Feenix Arcshine acting as mage and portal trainers for young promising mage adventurers.

The War Within

A few years later, the Hall of the Guardian was eventually destroyed when Xal'atath used the Dark Heart to absorb the arcane magic from Dalaran, before destroying it above the Isle of Dorn. It is unknown what is the current status of the organization as a whole, nor even its losses in the battle, but some of its members like such as Meryl Felstorm, Millhouse Manastorm, and various members from the Kirin Tor, have been seen among the survivors evacuated to Dornogal.

Organization

The order's archives within the Guardian's Library.

The Hall of the Guardian was once the headquarters of the Tirisgarde. It was the place where the Council of Tirisfal used to meet, and served as the mage order hall during the third invasion of the Burning Legion. It was located in the upper levels of the Violet Citadel, until Xal'atath used the Dark Heart to absorb the arcane magic from Dalaran, destroying it above the Isle of Dorn.

Leadership

The Tirisgarde was originally founded centuries ago by the Council of Tirisfal to hunt down Aegwynn when she went rogue. After its destruction by Medivh in the First War, it was reformed by Meryl Felstorm with the help of the mage champion, whom received the title of "Conjuror of the Tirisgarde", an ancient title symbolizing the awesome responsibility borne by the organization.[14]

The champions of the Tirisgarde act as exemplary representatives of the order,[3] and carry out important missions for the Conjuror of the Tirisgarde.

Membership

The Tirisgarde's scouting map.

The ranks of the Tirisgarde are made of mages from all over Azeroth. Among their recruiters, Archmage Omniara is a renowned summoner and powerful arcanist able to use several water elementals at the same time.[48][49] Grand Conjurer Mimic seeks out the most promising apprentices to train them very quickly, and her former students are known to be some of the most powerful conjurors in the land.[19]

In order to devise their strategies and missions, Archmage Melis had been hard at work getting the Tirisgarde's command room up and running,[50] giving its leader access to a scouting map to command their agents in carrying out vital assignments across the Broken Isles.[51] The order's vaults contain a vast store of magical devices.[52]

In battle, the organization deploy water elementals, Arcane Golems, Tirisgarde Apprentices, Kirin Tor Invokers and Kirin Tor Guardians.

  • Though most mages see elementals as unpredictable, frost mages have adopted water elementals as their magical familiar of choice for many centuries.
  • Animated by powerful sorcery, Arcane Golems are forged by expert masons and metalworkers, and empowered to defend mages with brute force.
  • The Tirisgarde recruits only the most talented spellcasters to be their apprentices, and even newcomers are more powerful than the masters of lesser orders.[53]

Chronicler Elrianne is in charge of the researches for the class hall. She is a well-respected archivist from the Kirin Tor who had spent several months studying with the pandaren in their library in Tian Monastery.[15]

Edirah and her researchers[54] are in charge of learning more about the artifacts' lore and power,[55] and record the information into the Archive of the Tirisgarde.

For years, the mages of Dalaran wondered and conjectured that it was possible to control the twisting, slipping, streaming threads of fate and destiny. According to Researcher Tulius, the books in the Hall of the Guardian tell of powerful mages who embraced the manipulation of time: they were true chronomancers. The only spell the Tirisgarde have been able to determine was a conjuration termed a "Seal of Fate", which allowed them to repeat their actions.[56]
