The Sha'tari were an order[1] of draenei researchers tasked by Prophet Velen to study the remains of the naaru D'ore and its kin, analyze them, and hopefully learn enough to communicate with the other naaru and draenei beyond Draenor. The organization was led by Exarch Othaar until he betrayed his people and joined the Burning Legion. It is unknown if the Sha'tari are still active on Outland or Azeroth in the aftermath of the genocide of the draenei by the Orcish Horde.

Background

Around 200 years BDP, the Council of Exarchs was established shortly after the draenei and Genedar crashed on Draenor. At the time, Prophet Velen realized that with the naaru K'ara, K'ure, and D'ore unavailable to guide them and his visions of the future having become unreliable, his judgment was no longer without fault and it would be disastrous if he was the only leader of his people. He thus formed a council of sages that would oversee different aspects of draenei culture. As the draenei recovered D'ore's remains from the Genedar, they did not yet know whether the fallen naaru was dangerous, or exactly how much of it had been consumed in Void energy. It fell to Exarch Othaar to become the leader of the Sha'tari, an order dedicated to studying D'ore and hopefully learning enough to communicate with the other naaru and draenei beyond Draenor.[2]

Five years later, as the draenei worked to build Shattrath City, Maladaar of the Sha'tari sensed that something was happening to the souls of draenei who had died in the Genedar's crash. The remains of the naaru D'ore had drifted deeper into a Void state, and they were attracting these spirits, with which living draenei could communicate. Since nothing like this had ever happened before in the history of eredar society, Velen immediately directed Maladaar and a group of Sha'tari to move the naaru's remains to a secluded place. They found a location on the outskirts of Terokkar Forest, where they built an immense mausoleum named Auchindoun ("a Home for the Honored Dead" in Draenei) and moved D'ore's remains within. From this moment, Maladaar was named as the fifth exarch on the draenei council and would lead an order called the Auchenai, responsible for communing with the draenei dead and protecting their souls from harm.[3]

Fifteen years later, like D'ore, the decaying naaru D'ore trapped within the Genedar's crystal wreckage began attracting the souls of dead orcs. This turn of events deeply troubled the draenei, as K'ure was fully intact and the dark powers bleeding from it seemed incredibly potent. They did not know what the long-term effects of this would mean for the world or the orcs, and the Sha'tari order's quiet missions to study the Genedar yielded no answers. Every action they could think to take would potentially cause disaster, because of the orcs were cut off from their ancestors, they might go to war; if K'ure were to suddenly fall deeper into the Void, there was no telling what horror might result. In the end, the draenei did nothing.[1]

It is unknown if the order survived the genocide of the draenei by the Orcish Horde, with approximately nine of every ten draenei murdered by the orcs.[4] At least, their leader Exarch Othaar survived the siege of Shattrath, but eventually betrayed his people and joined the Burning Legion at some point, becoming the man'ari eredar known as Socrethar.[5] Given that no members were seen in Outland or Azeroth, not even during the Tishamaat at the Exodar in year 40 ADP, it may be theorized that the organization was dissolved following the betrayal of its exarch or due to a lack of living members.

This article or section includes speculation, observations or opinions possibly supported by lore or by Blizzard officials. It should not be taken as representing official lore.

As "Sha'tar" means "Born from Light" in Draenei,[6][7] the name "Sha'tari" used by the order may have an identical or approximate translation.
