Joseph was a human paladin. Once a member of the Scarlet Crusade, he sought to reform the order by leading the Scarlet renegades in a revolt across the Scarlet Monastery. Years later, Joseph helped Veronica Nials to form the Red Dawn, a human supremacist organization led by Marran Trollbane. During their coup in Stromgarde Keep, he was killed by Geya'rah, Faerin Lothar and the adventurers.
Background
Cataclysm
Years ago, Joseph had joined the Scarlet Crusade as a young paladin seeking to cleanse the world of evil.[1] As part of the "purification" of the new crusaders, he was painfully overseen by Interrogator Vishas. Upon realizing that the Crusade was attacking the living instead of just fighting the undead, he started a mutiny and enlisted the help of the Alliance to defeat the actual leaders of the Scarlet Monastery.[2]
During the course of the rebellion, Joseph progressively unhinged as he fought through his former friends and allies, hence the changes in his title. When first encountered, he was known as "the Awakened", the later wings of the Monastery will see him known as "the Crazed", and finally as "the Insane". His increasingly paranoid ramblings were another testament to his madness.
The War Within
Years later, Joseph and Colonel Veronica Nials recruited the Scarlet Crusade, the Defias Brotherhood, and the Syndicate to create the Red Dawn: an organization that would lead all humans back to glory under the leadership of Lady Marran Trollbane, the "rightful ruler" of Stromgarde.[3][4] Joseph had urged his fellow Scarlet Crusaders that after their many defeats in their war against the Scourge, they needed to seek out allies and lend their aid to the Red Dawn's even grander aspirations of not only saving Azeroth from the undead, but making it a paradise for humans everywhere.[3]
In order to create the right conditions to justify their coup,[5] Joseph held inflammatory speeches in Stromgarde Keep where he advocated for Marran as the rightful ruler of Stromgarde and blamed King Danath Trollbane and all non-humans, specifically the Alliance and Horde, for the kingdom's woes. Captain Roderick Brewston eventually deputized Faerin Lothar and the adventurers to enforce the curfew for Marran's supporters,[6] and force Joseph to desist his speeches and leave the city.[4]
After King Danath was kidnapped by the Red Dawn, Joseph led the Scarlet Crusade in an attack on Refuge Pointe, killing all non-humans there and kidnapping the rest, though the passerby Mag'har Karga Bloodfury saved a few. The heroes defeated Joseph and forced him to escape.[7][8] Shortly after, the Syndicate, once again led by Joseph,[9] attacked the undefended Hammerfall and used the material from Newstead to set it on fire. Overlord Geya'rah, Eitrigg, Faerin, and the adventurers eventually led the Mag'har to retake the town[10][11] and force the Syndicate to retreat.
After Colonel Nials freed Marran, who launched a coup for control of the capital, Geya'rah, Faerin, and the adventurers killed Joseph before he could escape once more.[12]

Notes
- Joseph's deteriorating sanity is portrayed somewhat comically. In his first incarnation, he is calm and collected, even after learning of Bloodmage Thalnos' undeath. In his second incarnation, he has become more assertive, and typically of a Scarlet Crusader believes his cause is wholly righteous. In his third incarnation, he nervously reasons that he and "his boys" were forced to kill the other Crusaders and that he deserves the title of "Scarlet Champion". He begins talking to himself and ecstatically proclaims himself the new Scarlet Champion. In his final incarnation, he is found dancing in the middle of the Cathedral as the battle rages on, and goes on to reveal his plans to turn the Undercity into a "Scarlet paradise".
- He sent some letters to Captain Nials, but she hasn't responded.[13]
- Joseph and Livingston Marshal were good friends before he joined the Crusade.
