Hallow's End is an annual Halloween-inspired seasonal event that takes place during the latter half of October.

"When the decorations of Hallow's End light up Azeroth's cities, you know there's mischief afoot! Seek special vendors in Orgrimmar or Ironforge and get your hands on treats! Aid a sick orphan in a little trick-or-treating! Darkcaller Yanka, attending the Forsaken's Wickerman Festival, and Sergeant Hartman of Southshore are seeking your aid in keeping the enemy out of their holiday affairs - are you up to the challenge?"[1]

Hallow's End was celebrated in Lordaeron. There were several smaller festivals leading up to Hallow's End. One was somber, one was celebratory, and this one was a bit of both. It was believed to be a time when the barrier between the living and the dead was thin, and those who had passed on could be sensed by those still alive. Tradition had it that at the end of the harvest season, before the winds of winter began to blow, that a straw effigy would be erected right outside the palace. At sunset on the night of the ceremony, it would be lit on fire. It was an awesome sight—a giant flaming wicker man, burning bright against the encroaching night. Anyone who wished could approach the fiery effigy, toss a branch into the cracking flames, and in so doing metaphorically “burn away” anything he did not wish to carry into the quiet, deep reflection time provided by winter's enforced inactivity, such as emotions (fears, sorrows, old loves, new hates).[2] It was a peasant ritual, sprung up from time immemorial. Once, the effigy was burned by Jaina Proudmoore.[3]

During the Hallow's End in Year 24 ADP, the Headless Horseman was created in the Scarlet Monastery by Balnazzar using fel energies over the dead body of Thomas Thomson.[4]

World of Warcraft

WoW Icon update.png This section concerns content related to the original World of Warcraft.

Years after the Third War, Hallow's End marked the day the group of undead, who would later be known as the Forsaken, broke free of the Lich King's dominance and once again regained their free will.[5] They celebrated this occasion by setting fire to a wickerman after a short speech from Sylvanas Windrunner herself and smearing the ashes across their faces.

Cataclysm

Cata-Logo-Small.png This section concerns content related to Cataclysm.

Main article: Wickerman Festival

The humans of the Alliance have continued their traditional Hallow's End celebrations, even though they didn't quite understand the reasons for doing so, in the hopes of a brighter future despite the losses of the three great wars against the Scourge and Horde. Since the Cataclysm, the worgen of Gilneas have brought with them a deeper understanding of the origins of Hallow's End back to their old and new allies in the Alliance, and in particular, reintroduced the practice of burning a wickerman. King Genn Greymane was invited to speak for the length of Hallow's End to celebrants just outside Stormwind's city gates, just as Sylvanas now does near the inner entrance to the Undercity.

Warlords of Draenor

WoD-Logo-Small.png This section concerns content related to Warlords of Draenor.

Coincidentally, at this same time of year on Draenor there was a strange surge of spiritual energy. Beckoned by this phenomenon, a ghastly fleet of undead orc pirates called the Bonefleet emerged from the mist. The Bonefleet was led by a savage pirate known as Captain Bonerender, who sought nothing more than the complete destruction of all of the living of Draenor.[6]

Legion

Legion-Logo-Small.png This section concerns content related to Legion.

During the third invasion of the Burning Legion, an adventurer by the name of Duroc Ironjaw travelled through Val'sharah and came across the Crooked Tree of Bradensbrook. Fearing that it was of evil nature, he warned people not to approach it.[7] The story behind the tree is linked to four sisters who had been accused of many crimes. As punishment, they were sentenced to death by hanging at the Crooked Tree. The youngest managed to escape when the noose around her neck loosened. She returned many years later, to put her sisters' souls at peace.[8]

Battle for Azeroth

BattleForAzeroth-Logo-Small.png This section concerns content related to Battle for Azeroth.

During the Fourth War, a strange occurrence was happening in Dalaran. The adventurer sent their troops to see what could be done, which eventually encountered a crone and her broom.[9]

Holiday boss: Headless Horseman

Art of the Headless Horseman

Available in the Dungeon Finder like other holiday bosses, the Headless Horseman can be queued for players from levels 10-80.

Once per day, he drops the  [Loot-Filled Pumpkin] for characters level 70+, which can contain:

 [Loot-Filled Pumpkin]
Item Type
 [The Horseman's Reins] Mount
[The Horseman's Sinister Slicer] One-hand sword
[The Horseman's Horrific Hood] Plate helm
 [Magic Broom] Temporary mount
 [Sinister Squashling] Pet
 [Arfus] Pet
[Windborne Velocidrake: Hallow's End Armor] Drakewatcher manuscript
[The Scarlet Key] Scarlet Monastery of Old
Patched Harvest Golem appearances Cosmetic

The personal Hard Mode (gained by interacting with the wicker men at the entrance) does increase loot odds:

Is there an increased chance on the first kill of the day for the headless horseman mount?

Yes, and the first drop of the day receives a bonus likelihood that scales with the number of curses you apply.

He always directly drops a piece or two of loot, which scales the ilvl appropriate for the player's level when it dropped:

For levels 69 and below, he drops the  [Loot-Stuffed Pumpkin], which contains most of the Loot-Filled loot pool, but not the mount.

This one-time quest chain awards the  [Creepy Crate] combat pet, which cannot be crated and traded.

Bonefleet

Under the Crooked Tree

In Val'sharah, a daily quest was added outside Bradensbrook [35, 56] that rewards 4−6 Tricky Treat and a chance at one of four cosmetic helms.

  2. N [40-80 Daily] Under the Crooked Tree

The biggest source is  [Handful of Treats] from Candy Buckets at many inns. There are 133 buckets available to the Alliance, and 138 available to the Horde. Each Handful of Treats contains 0−3 Tricky Treat. The full list is on the Candy Bucket article.

Tricky Treat vendors

In 2011, vendors who use a  [Tricky Treat] as currency were added. These children found a better way to get candy, and rather than trick or treating they plan to trade items to adventurers for candy.

Buffs and speeches

Main article: Wickerman Festival

Players may use the bonfire in front of their faction's Wickerman to receive a +10% reputation and experience gain buff,  [Grim Visage] or  [Unburdened] depending on faction. Horde players must click on ashes on the ground after using the bonfire, while for the Alliance the bonfire itself is enough.

Sylvanas Windrunner and Genn Greymane visit the Hallow's End celebrations every four hours and give speeches which end with them granting the  [Decree of the Dark Lady] and  [Greymane's Resolve] combat buffs to players present. Players must be standing and have no active elixirs to receive the buff. A warning yell is given about the upcoming speeches on the appropriate hour, usually at 12, 4, and 8 o'clock (by the dominant time zone for the region, not server time), followed by the speech itself about 10 minutes into the hour.

Trivia

Being a cat during Hallow's End isn't so bad...

In the RPG

Icon-RPG.png This section contains information from the Warcraft RPG which is considered non-canon.

The day was once used for a festival near the end of harvest for humans of Lordaeron and Stormwind. The Humans would throw branches onto the Wickerman in symbolism of their past regrets and failures, in the hopes that the fire of the Wickerman would burn them away to allow for a better future. The Forsaken later bastardized this practice, and now use the evening for their mysterious "Wickerman" rituals.[10]
