Hallow's End is an annual Halloween-inspired seasonal event that takes place during the latter half of October. Many tricks and treats await adventurers seeking holiday fun, including defeating the Headless Horseman, visiting inns and cities for fun items such as masks and costumes, and eating way too much candy in one sitting.[1]

One non-duplicate set piece from the Ghoulish collection is guaranteed to drop each day.

Background

Hallow's End is celebrated during a time of year when, according to human tradition, the barrier between the living and the dead is believed to be thin and the deceased can be sensed by those still alive on Azeroth.[2] During the season, powerful magic fills the air,[3][4] and ghosts are more active in some locations.[5] This phenomenon culminates on the Day of the Dead, when the spirit world and the world of the living are at their closest all year.[6]

A similar phenomenon occurs on the alternate Draenor, which experiences a global surge of spiritual energy around the same time of year as Azerothians celebrate Hallow's End. This draws the Bonefleet, a fleet of undead pirates, to attack the shores of Draenor every year[7] with the intent of spreading their undead curse onto land.[8]

The holiday

Human observance

The Lordaeronian Wickerman Festival in Capital City.

“My countrymen, I join you in celebration of this most revered of nights—the night when we remember those who are no longer with us, and cast aside the things that hold us back. We burn the effigy of the wicker man as a symbol of the year that is passing, much as the farmers burn the remains of the harvested fields. The ashes nourish the soil, and this rite nourishes our souls.”

— Prince Arthas Menethil during a Wickerman Festival in Capital City[2]

The actual holiday of Hallow's End originated as a human "peasant ritual", sprung up from "time immemorial". In Lordaeron, there were several smaller festivals leading up to Hallow's End: one somber, one celebratory, and lastly the Wickerman Festival, which was a bit of both and was held at the end of the harvest season. A wickerman—a giant straw effigy—was erected outside the royal palace in Capital City and set on fire at sunset on the night of the ceremony, as a symbol of the passing year. Anyone who wished could throw a branch into the fire to metaphorically "burn away" anything they did not want to take with them (like negative emotions and memories) into the quiet reflection time provided by winter's enforced inactivity. By the time of the Great Wars, few Lordaeronians actually believed that the rite could solve their problems, much less that contact with the dead was possible, but it remained a popular celebration: visitors came to Capital City from all over Lordaeron to see the wickerman and enjoy the last days of autumn by holding picnics and dancing by the fire.[2][9]

In Gilneas, Hallow's End is a celebration of transition and change.[10] The Gilnean Wickerman Festival is similar to the Lordaeronian one. To Gilneans, the wickerman symbolizes self, while its burning represents a personal cleansing. Just as "the woods sigh and shed their leaves", in the words of the harvest-witches, the Gilneans believe that they too must undergo a catharsis. They throw a branch into the fire to relieve themselves of any burdens they do not want to bear into winter, allowing them to gain clarity and peace.[11][12]

Following the fall of Lordaeron during the Third War, the reason for the Hallow's End celebration, along with some of its aspects like the wickerman, were mostly forgotten by the Alliance for several years. When Gilneas rejoined the faction during the Cataclysm, they reintroduced the Wickerman Festival to their allies.[13] The festival's emphasis on change gained a deeper meaning to Gilneans with the loss of their kingdom and their affliction by the worgen curse, but instead of treating Hallow's End as a time for mourning, they approached it as an opportunity to boldly face the unknown, celebrate their new allies, and cast off their burdens so that they might better overcome any future struggles.[10]

Forsaken observance

“Children of the Night, heed your Queen's call! I join you in celebration of this most revered of nights - the night we Forsaken broke the Scourge's yoke of oppression! It is this night that our enemies fear us the most. It is THIS night that we show our enemies what it means to stand against the Forsaken! We burn the effigy of the Wickerman as a symbol of our struggle against those who would oppose us. We wear the ashes of the burnt Wickerman as a symbol of our neverending fight against those who would enslave us.”

— Lady Sylvanas Windrunner during the Wickerman Festival in the Ruins of Lordaeron[14]

The Forsaken observe Hallow's End as the date when, in 22 ADP,[15] the Banshee Queen Sylvanas Windrunner liberated them from the control of the Lich King and the Undead Scourge.[14][16][17] (This presumably refers to the night when Sylvanas and her forces, newly freed of the Lich King's Domination, first rose in open rebellion against the Scourge alongside the Dreadlord Insurgents and began the Plaguelands civil war,[18] though Sylvanas only declared the name "Forsaken" some three weeks later.[19]) Ever since, the Forsaken have celebrated Hallow's End in honor of their freedom from the Scourge,[1] as a symbol of their liberty and of Forsaken power.[14][20][21] Each evening during the season, they hold their own version of the Wickerman Festival in the Ruins of Lordaeron, where they burn the wickerman as a symbol of their struggle against those who would oppose them and paint their faces with its ashes as a symbol of their neverending fight against those who would enslave them.[14][21] They also celebrate the spirit of the holiday by bringing grief to their enemies (namely the Alliance) with pranks and sabotage.[20][22]

The Forsaken have spread Hallow's End to their allies in the Horde, though the reasons for the holiday and the Wickerman Festival remain a mystery to many non-Forsaken.[23][24][25] The orcs, who similarly fought for their independence from a corrupting force, support the Forsaken's celebration of their freedom, as they believe that nothing can be more important.[26]

General customs

Hallow's End decorations in the Undercity.

Hallow's End is a time of fun and mischief[27] when people, regardless of faction, dress up in masks and costumes[28][29] and eat excessive amounts of sugary candy.[1] A long-standing staple is for innkeepers across Azeroth to put out candy buckets in their inns.[30] Different races have their own classic Hallow's End treats: Stormwindians and orcs eat nougat,[31] Ironforge dwarves and Forsaken mint,[32] night elves and tauren marzipan,[33] and gnomes and Darkspear trolls gumdrops.[34] A popular activity is to go "trick-or-treating",[28][35][36] which consists of visiting inns to ask for candy. The "trick" can refer either to the innkeeper playing a prank on the visitor with a temporary magical transformation,[1][30] or to the visitor having to perform a trick themselves in exchange for treats.[37][38] Hallow's End is many children's favorite holiday.[30] Human and orc orphanages organize trips for their orphans to visit Alliance and Horde villages in order to let them see adventurers at work in the field during the holiday.[39][40]

Yes, and the first drop of the day receives a bonus likelihood that scales with the number of curses you apply.

10 Tricky Treat are awarded from the one-time quest A [1-80] Hallow's End Treats for Jesper! / H [1-80] Hallow's End Treats for Spoops!.

The biggest source is  [Handful of Treats] from Candy Buckets at many inns. There are 133 buckets available to the Alliance, and 138 available to the Horde. Each Handful of Treats contains 0−3 Tricky Treat. The full list is on the Candy Bucket article.

Tricky Treat vendors

In 2011, vendors who use a  [Tricky Treat] as currency were added. These children found a better way to get candy, and rather than trick or treating they plan to trade items to adventurers for candy.

Buffs and speeches

Main article: Wickerman Festival

Players may use the bonfire in front of their faction's Wickerman to receive a +10% reputation and experience gain buff,  [Grim Visage] or  [Unburdened] depending on faction. Horde players must click on ashes on the ground after using the bonfire, while for the Alliance the bonfire itself is enough.

Sylvanas Windrunner and Genn Greymane visit the Hallow's End celebrations every four hours and give speeches which end with them granting the  [Decree of the Dark Lady] and  [Greymane's Resolve] combat buffs to players present. Players must be standing and have no active elixirs to receive the buff. A warning yell is given about the upcoming speeches on the appropriate hour, usually at 12, 4, and 8 o'clock (by the dominant time zone for the region, not server time), followed by the speech itself about 10 minutes into the hour.

In the RPG

Icon-RPG.png This section contains information from the Warcraft RPG which is considered non-canon.

Hallow's End used to be a Lordaeronian human festival held near the end of the harvest. The Forsaken have bastardized this practice and now use the evening for their mysterious wickerman rituals.[54]

Hallow's End is a seasonal event that takes place around the same time as the World of Warcraft holiday. The Hearthstone iteration varies from year to year, but has in most years been mainly themed around the Headless Horseman, with themed Tavern Brawls, Arena events, and costumed hero skins.

“Observed by both the Alliance and the Horde, Hallow's End is a time to honor the spirits of the dead and unburden the souls of the living.”

— Description of the Hallow's End Warcrest banner

Hallow's End was a seasonal event that took place around the same time as the World of Warcraft holiday from 2015 to 2017, with themed cosmetics including skins and mounts, mainly based on the theme of heroes dressing up in holiday costumes or factions from the Gothic-inspired Nexus realm of Raven Court. From 2018 onward, the Hallow's End branding of the event was dropped in favor of a new unique theme each fall: Fall of King's Crest in 2018, The Scarlet Heist in 2019, and CraftWars in 2020.
