Zangarmarsh, once known as the Zangar Sea, is a hauntingly beautiful swamp covered with a forest of giant mushrooms. Though largely teeming with life, sections of the swamp have begun to die of late, and the sapient fungi of the region seek help in returning it to life. This zone is located in Outland to the west of Hellfire Peninsula.

The marshes are the home of myriad varieties of predatory invertebrates and flora, including marsh beasts, sporebats, and spore walkers. It is also home to several groups of lost ones, including the Daggerfen, Feralfen, and Umbrafen tribes.

History

Zangar Sea

Main article: Zangar encroachment
Concept art of the Zangar Sea.

Zangarmarsh was formerly a sea called Zangar Sea. The sea, and thus the Zangar encroachment, was created from the rotting body of the Sporemound Zang.[1] Early marshes existed along the coast of the sea.[2] Similar mushroom forests dotted the landscapes of all realms of Draenor, including the Umbrafen in Shadowmoon Valley and Zangarra in Talador (a forest known as Terokkar Forest in Outland). Seemingly having a mind of its own, the Zangar encroachment sought to overtake the land by releasing thousands of spores and slowly growing inland over time.[3] This seems to explain how Zangarmarsh eventually came to be. Zangarra was the source of the bloom that would become Zangarmarsh.[4]

Rise of the Horde

After the Siege of Shattrath by the Old Horde, Telredor was the place where Velen and the draenei survivors hid to escape the orcish genocide, waiting for years until their raid on the Exodar.[5] As time passed and fel energy continued killing the Draenor, the sea around the island would dry up and form a swampy mire called Zangarmarsh.[6]

It was also here that Akama led his own followers after the fall of Shattrath,[7] though it seems he and his people later moved east to Hellfire Peninsula where they built the Draenei Village. Other hiding individuals in the marsh included the draenei child Leena and her foster father, the Shadowmoon orc Jaruk Bloodfyre.[8]

Warcraft III

Following the Third War in 21 ADP, as part of his conquest of Outland, Illidan Stormrage closed down several dimensional gateways used by Magtheridon to bring demons from the Twisting Nether.[9] It was later revealed that one of these gateways was actually located in Zangarmarsh.

Coilfang Reservoir, a subterranean pumping station, operated by the Illidan's Naga.

After Illidan Stormrage failed to destroy the Frozen Throne in Northrend,[10] the Illidari retreated to Outland in order to escape Kil'jaeden's wrath. Among them, Lady Vashj and most of her forces, the Illidan's Naga, settled in Zangarmarsh where they began to drain its waters, collecting it in the Coilfang Reservoir. Using nearly all of the Broken Wastewalker tribe as slaves, her plan was to take control of all the waters of Outland, and through them, its people.[11] From her seat of power within Serpentshrine Cavern, Lady Vashj maintained a close eye on her minions and personally overseen the draining of the region.[12]

In the following years, the naga have constructed large pumping-machines on all the major lakes in Zangarmarsh; Marshlight Lake, Serpent Lake, Umbrafen Village, the Lagoon, and what became the Dead Mire. Meanwhile, the Ango'rosh tribe, a group of ogres led by Overlord Gorefist, began their "mushroom-cutting operation" in the region.[13] Consequently, the bog lords were no longer going the Hewn Bog for mushrooms and instead attacked the sporeggar.[14] Their massive cutting of mushrooms was severely damaging the ecology and economy. With the naga draining the waters and the ogres cutting off the mushrooms for their own needs, the ecology of the marsh was being severely affected, and the Cenarion Expedition had to act quickly or the marsh could have been destroyed.[15]

During the invasion of Outland in 26 ADP, both the Horde and Alliance established outposts in Zangarmarsh; with Swamprat Post and Zabra'jin being built by the Darkspear tribe, and Telredor under the control of the draenei. At some point, the Cenarion Expedition requested help from the Omenai at the Temple of Telhamat, in order to study what happened in the region and help reverse any damage possible.[16]

In Telredor, the Alliance adventurers discovered that the conditions in Zangarmarsh were rapidly deteriorating: disease had spread among plants and animals alike, and food sources were vanishing, driving the local creatures into a frenzy. Upon learning that the naga were responsible, the champions stormed into Coilfang Reservoir and slew the Coilfang matron, ending their threat in the region.[17]

The demon Xeleth - a Legion defector - was once worshipped as a god by primitive swamp creatures in Zangarmarsh. When Draenor was nearly destroyed, he retreated into a slumber deep beneath Marshlight Lake. The renegade demon hunter Altruis the Sufferer tasked heroes to destroy the demonic observer.[18]

The Twilight's Hammer had also marked their presence in the region. During the Midsummer Fire Festival, they tried to summon the frost lord Ahune into the Slave Pens of the Coilfang Reservoir. Their plan was for Ahune to enter Azeroth through the Dark Portal and fight Ragnaros on the other side, creating an elemental war which will "rend the foundations" of Azeroth and make it "a frozen paradise".[19] The summoning ritual was conducted by Skar'this the Summoner, but both were eventually killed by the adventurers.

Geography

Zangarmarsh consists of a large expanse of swampland, bordered by mountains to the north, south, and to some extent the east. A long stretch of coastline forms the western edge of the zone. Giant mushrooms are the characteristic feature of the area, towering above the pools of marsh water like great trees.

Zangarmarsh contains four instances, all located in the Coilfang Reservoir, one of which is a 25-man raid. This area has no battlegrounds or micro dungeons but has a world PvP zone for a graveyard nearest to the Coilfang Reservoir entry.

(Note: as of Feb 03 2008, at least for Alliance, the graveyard only works for the Slave Pens instance as the distance to instance portals is used instead of the distance to the Coilfang entry).

Warcraft II

Draenor as seen in the PlayStation version of Warcraft II. What seems to be Zangarmarsh can be seen to the left.

Not very much is known about the past history of Zangarmarsh as it was not mentioned in Warcraft II. Its name does not appear on any Draenor-maps, but the map for the PlayStation version on Warcraft II depicts a large green area where Zangarmarsh is located. Notably, based on this map, it seems Zangarmarsh at that time was the home of the Bonechewer clan and possibly the Warsong clan.

Warcraft III

Giant mushrooms seen in Outland in Warcraft III.

Zangarmarsh does not appear in Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne either, in which Outland is very similar to Hellfire Peninsula. The Outland seen in Warcraft III does however contain a large amount of giant mushrooms, which acts as Outland's "trees" (see lumber). It is possible that the giant mushrooms in Warcraft III were made into Zangarmarsh in World of Warcraft, similar to how the Black Temple was retconned to be in Shadowmoon Valley. In other words, it appears that Blizzard used the various features in the Warcraft III "Outland-version" to create new areas in World of Warcraft's Outland. The draenei encountered in Warcraft III were also shown to build their houses of these giant mushrooms (see Draenei Village), which is similar to Telredor in World of Warcraft.

One particular area in World of Warcraft, Thornfang Hill, contains both Zangarmarsh-mushrooms and Hellfire Peninsula-terrain. Thus, it is the Outland-area in World of Warcraft which is most similar to Outland seen in Warcraft III.

Notes and trivia

  • In Beyond the Dark Portal a swamp was already existing at the same approximate area as Zangarmarsh.[21] It was home to the Bonechewer clan.
  • Shadowbreak Ravine, a subzone found in Desolace, Kalimdor, shares several characteristics with Zangarmarsh. It has several luminescent giant mushrooms, a purple atmosphere, and demons. This area, predating Zangarmarsh, uses assets from an older version of Hellfire Peninsula that included mushroom trees.
  • The background music in many areas of Zangarmarsh is Chopin's Nocturne in C-sharp Minor, Op. 27, No. 1. Zangarmarsh's music, in a slightly different version, can also be heard in the exterior parts of Ahn'Qiraj. As Ahn'Qiraj was implemented earlier than Zangarmarsh, it could mean its music has been slightly "remixed" for the new zone.
  • There is a realm called Zangarmarsh US.
  • The The Burning Crusade Flash site had this to say about the zone: "Zangarmarsh is a tranquil area that has largely evaded the demonic influence. The marsh's innumerable lakes and pools are clean of any taint, and most native animals and fungi give off soothing phosphorescent light. Only recently has the area's self-contained ecology faltered. Something is causing the water levels to drop. The marsh's giant mushrooms are dying, as are the creatures that rely upon the mushrooms for food."[22]
