Timewalking

This article is about the dungeon mode. For the faction, see Timewalkers. For the level-scaling option available from Chromie, see Timewalking Campaigns.

Timewalking is a dungeon difficulty that allows players to queue up for a randomly selected dungeon from a previous expansion. Timewalking difficulty scales the dungeon up to the character's power and gear (timewalking raids scale the character's power and gear relative to the raid instead). Loot obtained during this difficulty has the Timewarped tag, which scales up to an item level appropriate for use at the player's level.[1]

Killing bosses in timewalking dungeons will award  [Timewarped Badges] which can be traded for valuable items at the timewalking vendors.

Character requirements

Characters level 70 and up must have an item level of 180. Characters below level 60 can also participate. They need to not be affected by  [Experience Eliminated] and not in a Timewalking Campaign.[2] Characters need to be the minimum level for the activate timewalking event, as listed.

Bonus Events

Burning Crusade Timewalking

There are eight different Timewalking Bonus Events: One for content from the original vanilla release and from each expansion from The Burning Crusade through Battle for Azeroth. When one of these events is active, a Weekend Event quest to complete five timewalking dungeons and a raid quest (if applicable) will also be available.

Reputation Buffs:

Timewalking quests include:

Turbulent Timeways

Main article: Turbulent Timeways

Turbulent Timeways is a multiple-week-long version of the Timewalking events that switch to a new expansion each week.

Completing any timewalking dungeon adds a stack to the  [Knowledge of Timeways] buff, adding 5% XP for 2 hours. At four stacks, the knowledge buff turns into  [Mastery of Timeways], granting +30% XP for 3 hours. Earning the Mastery buff for the first time each week is what grants achievement progress. The buffs can be refreshed by completing additional timewalking dungeons.

Background

With the Black Temple a metaplot was started to be introduced in the Timewalking events:

  • An unknown entity time-traveled to the Black Temple right before the original Illidari attack on Mardum and modified the battleplans for the incoming assault to make them even better. Vormu of the bronze dragonflight came too late to stop this modification of the timeline.[3]
  • Another unknown entity (or the same) time-traveled to Ulduar in order to tamper with and artificially age the titan locks holding Yogg-Saron in place, releasing the Old God forty millennia early.[4]

History

Blizzard announced in May 2014 that they were working on a way for higher-level players to tackle lower-level dungeon and raid content, with abilities and gear scaled down to an appropriate level. Likely using the same technology used for Challenge Mode, the Proving Grounds, and scaled battlegrounds, Timewalker mode would allow players to experience older dungeons and raids at a challenging level.[5]

The underlying system was largely implemented with patch 5.4.0 in September 2013,[6] but was not yet accessible to players. However, some players were previously able to access the mode through a bug in certain dungeons, allowing them to experience an incomplete version of the feature.[6][7]

The plan was to initially introduce the feature for dungeons only.[5]

Prior to the release of the official "Timewalking" name, the title "Timewalker" came primarily from game data listing this title as an additional category of instance.

Original levels

Removed from game The subject of this section was removed from World of Warcraft in patch 9.0.1.

Before the level changes introduced in Shadowlands, timewalking for The Burning Crusade content was available for characters level 71 and up; Wrath of the Lich King for level 81 and up;[1] Cataclysm for level 85 and up; Mists of Pandaria[8] for level 91 and up; and Warlords of Draenor for level 101 and up.[9]

Item levels
  • The maximum item level for Timewarped items was 425 for level 120 characters.
  • Gear scaled to the following item levels for their corresponding Timewalking event:
    • Classic - ilvl 60
    • Outland - ilvl 67
    • Northrend - ilvl 92
    • Cataclysm - ilvl 104
    • Mists of Pandaria - ilvl 116
    • Warlords of Draenor - ilvl 152

Notes

  • When an item drops in a Timewalking dungeon, its item level is based on the player's level at the time of the drop.
  • Killing mobs within Timewalking dungeons still rewards reputation for the appropriate factions of that expansion, if that mechanic existed in the original version of the dungeon.
  • All bosses in Timewalking dungeons and raids have a very small chance to drop the  [Reins of the Infinite Timereaver], an infinite drake mount.
  • The difficulty is sometimes colloquially referred to as Timewalker or Timewalker mode.

      • Lower-geared players are now slightly more damage-resistant.
      • Incoming damage should be more noticeable against geared players.
      • Fixed an issue where item level scaling did not account for enchantments, gems, and other power sources.
    • Timewalking dungeons will now drop Adventurer gear (was Explorer).
    • Completing a Timewalking dungeon now rewards 25 Timewarped Badges (was 10).

  • Dragonflight-Icon-Inline.png Patch 10.1.7 (2023-09-05): Timewalking dungeons now reward satchels of helpful goods; these are the same satchels that come from running non-timewalking dungeons via the Dungeon Finder's random search.
E.g.  [Icy Satchel of Helpful Goods] is available as a reward for doing Wrath of the Lich King timewalking dungeons.
