“Should you spy a mossy log / afloat in swamp, morass, or bog / toss a stone or take the risk / for it may be a crocolisk.”

Human nursery rhyme[1]
Crocolisk

Crocolisks (shortened to crocs[2][3] and rarely called crocodiles,[4][5][6] alligators,[7] or gators)[8][9] are six-legged, semiaquatic reptiles found in freshwater and saltwater environments across Azeroth. They make their habitat in wetlands, rivers, lakes,[10] and coastal waters.[11] Sometimes they find their way into cities' sewers and waterways.[12][13]

Characteristics

Crocolisks are masters of the ambush,[14] ferocious and seldom taken by surprise.[15] They're able to eat large prey, such as hozen, whole.[16] Even crocolisks that normally keep to themselves may become aggressive out of sheer hunger if their waters are overfished.[17] While crocolisks have no inherent magical abilities, they can undergo changes from magic in the environment. For example, due to the corruption emanating from Grim Batol, some crocolisks living in the Wetlands have gained poisonous bites.[18]

Archeologists believe crocolisks may have descended from the diemetradons of Un'Goro Crater.[11] After studying crocolisks for several years, famed angler Nat Pagle determined that the babies are mostly harmless.[19] There are rumors that very old crocolisks can grow to enormous sizes.[6] The crocolisks of Uldum are known for being bigger than others.[20] Crocolisks in the Valley of the Four Winds sometimes grow abnormally large because of runoff from the Pools of Power.[6]

Many crocolisk parts have some value as commodities, including the hides, teeth, tails, tongues, eyes,[3] jaws,[21] and meat.[15] In particular, there's a hot market for crocolisk skins,[22] which can be used by tanners and leatherworkers[23][24] to make clothing and armor.[25] Young crocolisks' skins are soft,[26] while elder crocs' skins are more durable and make a better canvas for designs.[27] The Zandalari trolls use crocolisk skins in ceremonial armor.[28] The tol'vir tribes of Uldum line their best armor with riverbed crocolisk skin.[29]

Some people enjoy the taste of crocolisk meat,[25] though in Dunlor Marblebeard's opinion, it's less tasty than threshadon.[30] Crocolisk eggs can be pickled and eaten.[31] Lorewalker Cho uses crocolisk eyes to give his dream brew the perfect consistency.[32]

Crocolisks are a family of Ferocity pets. There are two different models that can be tamed, each in a handful of colors: the original model and a higher-poly model added in Cataclysm. None of the currently-tamable colors are unique to any specific mob.

During Wrath of the Lich King, three unusual mobs were tamable as part of the crocolisk family for a short time: Spirit of Ha-Khalan, a ghostly white crocolisk; Spirit of Atha, a ghostly white hydra; and Spirit of Koosu, a green ooze.

Alligators

Alligators are aquatic predators found in Dustwallow Marsh[33] and the Swamp of Sorrows.[34] Humans and murlocs drag nets down the channels of water in Dustwallow to harvest gigantic mudfish, but also pull in everything from alligators to eels.[35] The brackish water in places where the ocean seeps into the fens is ideal for alligators.[34]

Crocodiles

Crocodiles are aggressive predators 11 to 12 feet long. They lie mostly submerged in rivers or marshes, with only their eyes and nostrils showing, waiting for prey to come within reach. In combat, they attack by biting or slapping with their tail. If a crocodile successfully bites down and establishes a hold on an opponent, it will attempt to drag the opponent into deep water and pin them to the bottom. A crocodile can hold its breath for a long while before it risks drowning.[36]

Giant crocodiles usually live in saltwater and can be more than 20 feet long. They fight and behave like their smaller cousins.[36]

Druids can summon a crocodile or giant crocodile as a Nature's Ally.[37]

Crocolisks

Crocolisks are lizard-like, amphibious predators relatively common in most regions of Azeroth. They are massive in length and covered in thick, rough scales that run from the end of the tail to the tip of the maw. Mottled green in color with yellowish fangs, they are supported by six squat legs and webbed feet, each of which ends in short, black claws.[36][38]

They exist naturally in both fresh and saltwater environments, usually preferring to remain close to land. However, seafarers occasionally report sighting giant crocolisks out in the ocean, miles from dry land. Crocolisks spend most of their time submerged, but are equally at home on land and often climb onto shore to sun themselves or to roll in warm mud. They are extremely proficient swimmers, able to surge forward with bursts of speed that often catch prey by surprise. They typically prefer to feed on relatively defenseless prey, such as small, aquatic creatures or larger land creatures that flounder when crossing bodies of water. However, crocolisks never hesitate to defend their territory aggressively from trespassers.[36][38] Even firing a warning shot may not deter crocolisks in pursuit, as Brann Bronzebeard discovered while traveling in the Swamp of Sorrows.[39]

A crocolisk prefers to lie in wait, submerged at the edge of a river with only its eyes and nostrils showing. The crocolisk charges and attacks any creature that wanders too close. It bites and lacerates until the victim bleeds to death, then drags the corpse back to its watery home. A crocolisk can hold its breath for a long while before it risks drowning.[36][38]

The Gurubashi Arena in Stranglethorn Vale keeps crocolisks in its menagerie,[40] among other creatures.

Recently, a new breed of mutated crocolisk has been sighted in remote areas of Azeroth. Corrupted by an unknown force, these twisted crocolisks are known as dreadmaws and reportedly grow to monstrous proportions.[38]

Notes and trivia

  • Everybody loves Bruce.[41]
  • Crocolisks like to sun themselves.[42]
  • Old Yoon believed that the smell of leeks can keep crocolisks away.[43]
  • A traveling merchant once sold a batch of baby crocolisks to some gullible children. Many of the beasts escaped and wound up in the waterways of Stormwind City and Orgrimmar.[13]
  • At one point, the Darkmoon Faire's zoo featured a boy raised by crocolisks.[44]
  • The original crocolisk model's ID is 137; the baby model's ID is 2640; and the Cataclysm model's ID is 3451.
