Swift Windsteed

The Swift Windsteed is one of Pandaria's rarest and most majestic beasts.[1] Darting across the heavens on a silver cloud, it is said that good fortune will follow the rider. Sky-goat cavalry, mount up!

This item was available for purchase from the shop or the In-Game Store for $25 or €25. It was released on 8 January 2013.[1] With the See You Later Bundle on 20 December 2018, this mount was available at a discounted price with other items and has since been removed from the store as it entered hibernation in the Blizzard Archive as of 19 January 2019.[2]

Since then, it has been available for a limited time on multiple occasions:

  • In 2022, it was given out as a reward to viewers of eligible Twitch streams who watched for at least four hours from December 9-13.[3]
  • It was later available as an Amazon Prime Gaming offer from 26 December 2023 to 30 January 2024.[4]

Swift Windsteed

It should come as no surprise that the mist-shrouded lands of Pandaria are host to a wild array of exotic beasts, a rare few of them suitable as mounts.

Behold, one of the very rarest and most majestic...

Notes and trivia

  • The Swift Windsteed's appearance is based off of the qilin (麒麟, qílín), a Chinese mythological creature which somewhat resembles a cross between a horse and a dragon, and which is often referred to as a "Chinese unicorn". The similarly-named quilen in World of Warcraft bear little resemblance to the mythological qilin and are instead based on Chinese guardian lions.
  • Until more Windsteed mounts were added in WoW Remix: Mists of Pandaria, no other creatures or mounts used this model and it was exclusively used by the Swift Windsteed alone.
    • There were nearly twelve years between the Swift Windsteed's introduction and the addition of more Windsteed mounts.
    • During the Shadowlands alpha, the cloudstriders of Bastion originally used the same model as the Windsteed, but later in development they were changed to a unique model.
  • The Windsteed uses the horse skeleton with the /mountspecial twirl.
