“... no animal can beat a bakar in loyalty and honor.”

Beastmaster Zira

Bakar are a breed of large dogs[1][2][3] native to the Dragon Isles, mainly the Azure Span and the Ohn'ahran Plains. They are domesticated as companions by several of the centaur clans. It is said that there are few bonds stronger than that of a Maruuk centaur and their bakar. It is a cause for celebration when one's bakar loses their baby teeth. The occasion has been commemorated for thousands of years by using the baby teeth to make jewelry, modern craftsmanship of which has become more intricate. All manner of bangles or circlets are made from these teeth. They are even used to make musical instruments, it is said the teeth have a lovely percussive quality when bunched together.[4] Leather shoes, lined with fleece, are made for bakar to protect their bare paws from the cold.[5] They hold a special place in Clan Shikaar, serving as the Shikaar's fellow hunters, guards, and most cherished friends.[2] The Shikaar give their bakar collars, which can be adorned with the dogs' puppy teeth and bone ornaments from their first hunt.[6] Clan Nokhud uses bakar as war dogs.[7] The Imbu tuskarr tribe have white bakar as pets, with one of them serving as The Blubberwall's mount. Igraine, the black drakonid blacksmith in Algeth'era Court, keeps a black and golden female bakar named Penny as a pet.

Notes and trivia

  • Bakar love to chew bones, and sometimes they chew on centaurs' bows.[8]
  • In Iskaara, Elder Poa tells a story of a bakar who protected a young Imbu tuskarr from a slyvern and a crystalspine. During the battle, the crystalspine shot its spines into the bakar's back; but, despite the terrible pain, the bakar emerged victorious. The grateful tuskarr vowed to nurse the bakar back to health, although the spines could never be removed. From then on, the bakar were the most beloved companions of the tuskarr of Imbu.[9]
  • Most of the friendly named bakar in the Ohn'ahran Plains can be petted. Petting them all is required for the  [Who's a Good Bakar?] achievement.
  • The bakar seem to be inspired by the Tibetan Mastiff and Bankhar breeds of dogs. "Bankhar" is Mongolian for "chubby, fat, fluffy."
