Saurid, formerly known as compies, are small, bipedal dinosaurs with a venomous bite native to Zandalar. The Zandalari trolls consider them to be vermin no better than rats, as they frequently gnaw at the trolls' food, poison their waters, hunt their children, and eat their wounded. However, when the Zandalari renewed their alliance with the mogu, they brought saurid with them to the Isle of Thunder and began training them, proving that even the vermin of the Zandalari are a weapon in the trolls' arsenal. Saurid have been known to kill both Kirin Tor Offensive and Sunreaver Onslaught soldiers by sneaking into their tents at night. The Zandalari raptors and saurid represented a substantial threat to their forces, and they were described as superb hunting beasts that can track prey over great distances and are often lethal to encounter when caught unawares.

Jani is a saurid loa. He is the Patron of Scavengers, the Lord of Thieves, the God of Garbage, Master of Minions, and the Keeper of Secrets.

Notes and trivia

• Prior to Battle for Azeroth, saurid were known as "compies" and used smaller raptor models with slightly different textures. With Battle for Azeroth, these creatures received a new, unique model, and the names of the previous NPCs were retroactively changed from "compy" to "saurid". The model is still named compy in the game files.
  • "Compy" is a nickname used in the Jurassic Park franchise for the Procompsognathus, a diminutive species of dinosaur from the late Triassic period. In the movie adaptation of The Lost World, the name is instead applied to the Procompsognathus' distant relative, the Compsognathus.
• The  [Tome of Hex: Compy], formally as the now removed  [Glyph of the Compy], causes a shaman's [Hex] spell to transform enemies into compies instead of frogs.
• Zenda sells a drink named " [Saurid Sipper]" in her stall during Brewfest.
•  [Saurid Sticks] is a popular dish sold by many food vendors in Zandalar.
• In Dazar'alor, Griftah sells  [Zul's Saurid Ward] which he claims has the power to keep saurid away.
• Adventurers can acquire a  [Saurid Soul] soulshape form by /bow-ing to the Mysterious Trashpile in Maldraxxus.
