This article is about the brewhound breed in general. For the Alterac Valley NPC, see Alterac Brew-Hound.
A brewhound in Alterac Valley.

The Alterac brewhound is a breed of mastiff from the Alterac Mountains bred for rescue duty. Their bloodline is famous for finding many travelers trapped in snow high in the mountains and resuscitating them with Alterac brandy (and then slobbering all over them). The most famous brewhound of all is Bernard, credited with saving upwards of 50 lives, many in Alterac Valley.[1][2]

Notes and trivia

  • Brewhounds were first introduced in the form of the Alterac Brew-Pup pet in November 2013 and did not appear as NPCs until the addition of Balto in 2017's patch 7.1.5.
  • The brewhounds' appearance, role, and practice of carrying brandy are inspired by the St. Bernard, a breed of large Alpine rescue dogs famous for rescuing avalanche victims and, according to legend, carrying barrels of brandy around their necks. The Alterac Brew-Pup is internally referred to as "stbernarddogpet", as seen by the name of its pet icon in the game files.
