A skeletal wind serpent.

Undead beasts[1] are a unique category of hunter pets introduced in patch 9.0.1. They are not a standalone pet family, but rather a range of appearances spread across several different families. These creatures are normally classed as undead NPCs but become beasts when tamed. Only Forsaken hunters can tame undead by default; hunters of other races must learn the skill from a  [Simple Tome of Bone-Binding].

Note that there are many types of untamable undead animals as well as animals who look like undead creatures but are classified as normal beasts. These are not included in this article.

Notes

  • Skeletal birds of prey were originally classified as normal beasts and were therefore tamable by all hunters, but they were reclassified as undead in patch 9.0.1.
  • Fel wolves and hell hounds were reclassified from demons and elementals, respectively, to undead in patch 9.0.1.
  • If a hunter does not know how to tame undead beasts, trying to cast [Tame Beast] on one will cause the error message "You do not know how to tame Undead creatures", rather than the usual "Creature not tameable" or "Invalid target" messages.
