“The Uncrowned work behind the scenes, pulling strings here, snipping others there. It's a matter of making the right choices at the right time in the most elegant manner possible.”

Lord Jorach Ravenholdt[1]

The Uncrowned is a secret organization of rogues led by the Shadows, their leaders, who form the Council of Shadows.[2][3] Working behind the scenes, the Uncrowned existed long before the events of the third invasion of the Burning Legion, and were described by their current leader Lord Jorach Ravenholdt as "the slayers of kings, the downfall of empires, the unseen blades that write the true history of this world."[4] From their order hall hidden in the sewers of Dalaran, the Hall of Shadows, their agents fought against the Burning Legion alongside the other class orders, united as the Armies of Legionfall.

Since the end of the Argus Campaign, the Uncrowned are still carrying out missions for those ready to call upon them, but also train promising young rogues in the ways of assassination and espionage.

The Hall of Shadows, headquarters of the Uncrowned hidden in the Underbelly of Dalaran.

Following the Battle for Broken Shore, Lord Jorach Ravenholdt and the Council of Shadows came into contact with a rogue hero in the Chamber of Shadows, where they invited them to take their seat as the final Shadow, and help them lead the Uncrowned.[5] After the presentation of the secret organization, their methods, and their goals, the now complete Council of Shadows organized itself to obtain several legendary artifacts including The Kingslayers:  [Anguish] and  [Sorrow], The Dreadblades:  [Fate] and  [Fortune], and the Fangs of the Devourer:  [Gorefang] and  [Akaari's Will], to equip their new champion who would operate outside the halls and vanquishes their foes.[6]

After successfully securing all of the artifacts, the council members celebrated over glasses of wine, who were in fact poisoned by Vanessa VanCleef. Her goal was to kill the Last Shadow, but after being defeated, she had no other choice but to serve the latter, or she would have been executed.[7]

During the course of the invasion, the Uncrowned mobilized their agents on the Broken Isles,[8][1] and subsequently organized the recruitment and training of new agents, notably from the Defias Brotherhood, under the teaching of Lonika Stillblade and her School of Roguery.[9][10]

Following the recruitment of Winstone Wolfe,[11] the Uncrowned discovered the body of an SI:7 agent in the sewers of Dalaran. Fearing that the SI:7 would take too much interest in them, Ravenholdt sent his agents to investigate the situation in Stormwind City,[12] where they discovered that Mathias Shaw had increased his number of agents in Horde territory,[13] and ordered the elimination of Amber Kearnen.[14] Realizing that something was wrong with Shaw's behavior, the Uncrowned investigated the relationship between the SI:7 and the Red Blade at Citrine Bay, in Stormheim.[15] They discovered that the Spymaster ordered the pirates to execute Kearnen in exchange for access to Stormwind Harbor and a royal pardon for their past crimes committed.[16] They also got their hands on a mysterious letter with a complex code and began to decipher it to find out the reasons for Mathias to eliminate his best agent.[17]

The Council of Shadows, leaders of the Uncrowned.

After the recruitment of Yancey Grillsen,[18] the Uncrowned mobilized to make diversions in order to prevent the SI:7 from being present in Val'sharah and staying away from Black Rook Hold.[19] To discover the contents of the letter, Valeera Sanguinar investigated with the Last Shadow on The Raven's Eye, a magical jewel created by the vrykul Havi, which was once used by Ravencrest's almost perfect espionage team during the War of the Ancients.[20] They eventually recovered it from Dantalionax in the Black Rook Hold.[21]

With the jewel, the Uncrowned deciphered the letter and discovered that Mathias Shaw had been kidnapped and replaced by the dreadlord Detheroc, who manipulated the SI:7 and the Alliance, and that Amber Kearnen had been eliminated after she learned the truth.[22] In order to prevent the Alliance from being devoured from within by the Legion, the organization revealed the truth to King Anduin Wrynn, while searching through the Broken Isles to find the Spymaster.[23] They eventually found him captive at the Felsoul Hold in Suramar, and called on Marin Noggenfogger to create an explosive diversion for the Last Shadow and Taoshi to save Mathias Shaw from his demonic jailer, Vaultwarden Umbra.[24][25][26]

Once free, Mathias Shaw revealed Detheroc's plans to create an open conflict between the Alliance and the Horde, so that the Legion could prevail. The Spymaster then came up with an infiltration plan to eliminate the nathrezim, which was accepted by the Council of Shadows.[27] The Champions of the Uncrowned carried out the plan by infiltrating Stormwind City and succeeded in revealing Detheroc's true identity before eliminating him, preventing the rise of a conflict between the two factions, and allowing Mathias Shaw to resume his post, now an ally of the Uncrowned.[28]

During the Battle for the Exodar, Garona Halforcen and Vanessa VanCleef helped the Shadowblade in repelling High General Rakeesh and the Legion forces out of the draenei capital.[29]

Following their victory over Detheroc, the Uncrowned joined the other orders, represented by Jorach Ravenholdt,[30] to form the Armies of Legionfall. For their many exploits, the Last Shadow obtained the title of "Shadowblade" from Lord Ravenholdt.[31] They also received the Shadowblade's Murderous Omen after they worked with Lilian Voss to deal with homonculi hidden in the Hall of Shadows, but also across the Alliance and Horde capitals.[32][33] Their Uncrowned agents later helped to repel the legion's assault on Dalaran and to fight alongside their allies during the Assault on Broken Shore. They were also present on Argus, accompanying the Shadowblade to fight the demons and protect the Vindicaar.

After the Fourth War

Following the Argus Campaign and the Fourth War, Mathias Shaw mentioned in his report that the Uncrowned were still active with Jorach Ravenholdt at their head,[34] and that among them Vanessa VanCleef, Garona Halforcen, and Lilian Voss were still active and recognized members of the organization. The Spymaster even took advantage of his cooperation with the Uncrowned to meet and engage the blood elf Narsilla Keensight, codenamed Lancer, who spies on the Horde for SI:7 interests.[35]

Shadowlands

The Uncrowned made their appearance in the rogue section of the Training Hall in Stormwind and the Barracks in Orgrimmar, with Veruca Darkstream and Thega Graveblade as rogue trainers.

Some time after the discovery of the Dragon Isles, a disgraced noble and a bandit named Duncon Ratsbon convinced the remaining Defias to turn against Vanessa VanCleef,[36] ending their affiliation with the Uncrowned.

The War Within

After Dalaran was teleported to Khaz Algar, Xal'atath summoned the nerubians of Azj-Kahet to attack the city. The nerubians assaulted the Underbelly and were seen capturing the rogues of the Uncrowned, fortunately, some were saved by Anduin Wrynn and an adventurer.[37] Unlike some rogues found dead, Marin Noggenfogger survived the destruction of the city and was present on the Isle of Dorn, gutting a nerubian saboteur in order to create antidotes for their poison.[38] Some time later, Valeera Sanguinar, Garona Halforcen, Taoshi, and Jorach Ravenholdt established a makeshift headquarters in the Kindling Parlor in Dornogal to plan their next move. Displaced Rogues could also be found in the Fissure, the seedy underbelly of Dornogal.

The Den of Thieves within the Hall of Shadows.

The Hall of Shadows was the headquarters of the Uncrowned and their the rogue order hall during the third invasion of the Burning Legion. Prior to the destruction of Dalaran by Xal'atath, it was located in the southwestern section of the Underbelly, and could only be entered from secret entrances are located in a number of stores across the magical city.

Council of Shadows

The Uncrowned is under the leadership of both Lord Jorach Ravenholdt[34] and the Shadowblade,[31] who was chosen for their skills to act as the blade in the dark that vanquishes their foes.[6] They are part of the Council of Shadows, leaders and champions of the organization[2][3] who aim the blades of their forces wherever their will demand.[4] They employ a variety of methods to ensure the safety of Azeroth and to secure their rightful place within it. While they prefer using secrecy and subtlety to their advantage, the events at the Broken Shore forced the council to reveal themselves.[4]

Membership

The Uncrowned's scouting map.

The ranks of the Uncrowned are made of rogue, pirates, and scoundrels from all over Azeroth and Outland. Among their recruiters, Lonika Stillblade is the founder of the Lonika's School of Roguery in Shattrath City, and take care of training Gang of Bandits for the interests of the organization.[10] Yancey Grillsen was also recruited at the request of Fleet Admiral Tethys to enrol crew of pirates in their ranks.[39]

Their agents carry the Uncrowned Insignia on them at all times. Another means of recognition is to make the sign of the Uncrowned, give the secret handshake, and wink at the other agent.[40]

In order to devise their strategies and missions for their agents on the Broken Isles, the Uncrowned used a scouting map at the Cantrips & Crows.[41] According to Nikki the Gossip, the Shadowblade can put a bounty on a king's head, offer a reward for felsilk cloth, or any of their whims on the map, and their agents would take care of it.[8]

The organization is known to deploy gangs of bandits, Defias thieves, crews of pirates, Uncrowned duelists, and Ravenholdt assassins:

  • Often called common criminals, Bandits are often used by the Uncrowned to obtain information and goods through stealth or strongarm tactics.
  • The hardened outlaws of the Defias Brotherhood, defiant against corrupt nobility, wear red bandanas in order to symbolize the blood shed by the oppressed.
  • Bloodsail Buccaneers can fight on land and on sea, both sober and not. The sight of their crimson sails on the horizon is enough to convince their enemies to surrender before a single cannon is fired.
  • "A dueling ring, here? I suppose if they're going to be degenerate gamblers anyway, they might as well stay in fighting shape." - Jorach Ravenholdt
  • Ravenholdt's personal guard. Deployed from his manor whenever a "special" occasion demands it.[42]

As the only person who truly knew how to work the venomous injections of the Crucible of the Uncrowned into the Shadowblade's artifacts, Marin Noggenfogger was considered a very valuable asset,[43] though he used this position for his own gain.[44]

Filius Sparkstache and a group of scribes the rogues extorted[45] were in charge of learning more about the artifacts' lore and power,[46] and record the information into the Blood Ledger.

In exchange of a rather sizeable sum of gold deposited into his bank account, Winstone Wolfe was recruited to improve the way things run in the Hall of Shadows.[47]

Notes and trivia

  • Vanessa VanCleef was favored to become the final Shadow only for the council to choose the rogue champion instead.[7]
  • It seems that the Uncrowned are ready to kill in order to protect their secrecy, as evidenced by the dead Unwary Adventurers in their class hall.
  • During Legion's alpha, Mathias Shaw was a Shadow of the Uncrowned instead of being their "enemy" impersonated by Detheroc. An orc called The Hood was also present as the leader of the Shattered Hand. It is possible that Shaw and the Hood were both there as Alliance and Horde representatives, respectively. They were later removed in a patch that also added Tess Greymane.
  • A scrapped mission suggests that the Uncrowned would've been established only in Legion[48] rather than being a pre-existing organization.
  • In Hearthstone, Tess Greymane's greetings emote is: "The Uncrowned send their regards." which is apparently an homage to Game of Thrones's line "The Lannisters send their regards."
  • In the Battle for Azeroth alpha and beta, a club at Hook Point in Boralus had Uncrowned banners hanging on the walls.
