“Monks, our greatest challenge still lies ahead. Under our new master, we will send a message of defiance to our enemies. They will not take our home without a fight!”

Number Nine Jia[1]

The Order of the Broken Temple (also referred to as the Broken Temple)[2][3] is an order of monks founded after the destruction of the Peak of Serenity in Pandaria. Following the Legion's assault on their monastery, and the subsequent death of Master Hight, the survivors rallied on the Wandering Isle which happened to be traveling nearby at the time. Under the leadership of their Grandmaster, the monks set up their order hall within the Temple of Five Dawns and fought alongside the other class orders, united as the Armies of Legionfall, during the third invasion of Azeroth. They are the bringers of hope to a dim future.[4]

Since the end of the Argus Campaign, the Order of the Broken Temple remains active and trains young monks in the ways of martial arts.

Main article: Peak of Serenity

Prior to the third invasion of the Burning Legion, the monks of the Peak of Serenity in Kun-Lai Summit were part of an unnamed order,[5][6] whose monastery served as a training ground for monks of any race who wished to train and hone their skills in the martial arts. Under the leadership of Grand Master Hight, their ranks included several senior monks who mastered and taught their students the art of various crafts, including the practice of chi, hand-to-hand fighting, healing, meditation, and weapon mastery.[7]

Legion

Following the Battle for Broken Shore, Grand Master Hight requested all senior monks to return to the Peak of Serenity, including the monk adventurer. The meeting was held there to establish a strategy against the threat posed by the Burning Legion, however, they were soon assaulted by an army of demons led by Lady Keletress, an man'ari eredar who had made her personal mission to wipe out the monks of Azeroth, seeing their quest for balance and order as an affront to the Legion.[5] Despite their resistance, the monks were ultimately overwhelmed and had to evacuate to the Wandering Isle on Shen-zin Su, who happened to be traveling nearby. Along with Master Hight, the monk hero stayed behind to close a large portal opened by Portal Master Jorvinax, which they managed to destroy at the cost of the grand master's life.[8]

At the Temple of Five Dawns, the survivors renamed themselves the "Order of the Broken Temple", and the monk hero was chosen as their new leader. This decision was made by several masters who judged them as someone who had shown strength, wisdom, courage, valor, and kindness beyond measure.[1] In order to fight the Legion, the Grandmaster began their quest to collect several legendary artifacts mentioned in the order's scrolls, including  [Fu Zan, the Wanderer's Companion],  [Sheilun, Staff of the Mists], and the Fists of the Heavens:  [Al'burq] and  [Alra'ed].[9]

After successfully recovering all the legendary weapons, the Order of the Broken Temple began to mobilize their monks on the Broken Isles,[10][11] where they notably saved the renowned trainer Tianji,[12] who quickly began the training of their forces.[13] They later hired other masters, such as Gin Lai.[14] At the request of Iron-Body Ponshu, the Grandmaster also recruited Li Li and Chen Stormstout as champions.[15][16] At some point, the Kirin Tor gave the order a permanent portal to Dalaran, as well as one from the magical city back to the Temple of Five Dawns.[11]

After they heard from all their temples on Pandaria, except for Tian Monastery in the Jade Forest,[17] Chen Stormstout was sent to investigate and discovered they had come under attack by the Legion.[18] With the help of the Order of the Broken Temple, the monastery's defense was led by Taran Zhu and the Shado-Pan, with the support of the The Monkey King and the Tian Pupils.[19] During the counterattack, the monks destroyed the Fel Spreaders, put out the fel fires across the area,[20] and eventually killed Skola Greatsword at the head of the invading forces,[21] but not before Lady Keletress abducted several monks in her escape.[22] In the aftermath, the Monkey King and Taran Zhu pledged themselves as champions to the Grandmaster and their cause.[23][24]

High Elder Cloudfall, master of the Tian Monastery, later traveled to the Wandering Isle to lend his help in making the Temple of Five Dawns a solid base of operations.[25] Before he could build their defenses, he tasked the Grandmaster to help Lao Shu replenish their stocks of bandages and food for the wounded.[26] Meanwhile, the order's scouts discovered that their kidnapped allies have been taken to Stormheim. The monks were eventually dispatched on multiple missions to gather intelligence on the Tideskorn vrykul, particularly regarding their numbers and the presence of Legion forces at the Gates of Valor.[27]

Once ready, the Grandmaster began a rescue operation at the Gates of Valor with the help of Angus Ironfist.[28] Together, they saved the monk prisoners, but also Sylara Steelsong[29][30] andHiro[31] who have been captured, beaten and tortured by the demons. All of them later joined the ranks of the Order of the Broken Temple as devoted champions.[32][33][34]

When the monks learned of the Storm Brew created by a vrykul named Melba, they wished to convince her to share the secret recipe in order to gain a significant advantage over the enemy. However, they soon learned from her apprentice Aegira that the legendary vrykul brewmaster had been assassinated two years ago.[35] With the help of the Grandmaster, Aegira avenged her master and recovered the Storm Brew recipe from Morjirn, the head brewer of the Tideskorn.[36] After several missions across the Broken Isles,[37] and meeting Melba in the Halls of Valor to recover Odyn's Cauldron,[38] the monks were able to make Storm Brew, which they used to repel the Legion assault on the Wandering Isle and ultimately kill Lady Keletress.[39]

In the aftermath, the Broken Temple gathered at Morning Breeze Village where Chen Stormstout gave a speech in honor of the fallen, to celebrate the dawn of their order, and eventually toasted to friendship and fellowship. Meanwhile, the Grandmaster's deeds motivated the monks to double their efforts and develop a technique that would awaken their artifact weapon to its true potential at the Forge of the Roaring Mountain.[40]

Legionfall

Following their victory, the Order of the Broken Temple, represented by Iron-Body Ponshu,[41] eventually joined the other orders to discuss the Pillars of Creation and form the Armies of Legionfall. Their monks later helped to repel the legion's assault on Dalaran, and could be found fighting demons from Deliverance Point during the Assault on Broken Shore.

At some point, Brewmaster Blanche was killed by Varagol the Coercer, who stole her form and poisoned her Celebration Brew to weaken the Order of the Broken Temple. In time, the Grandmaster made their way to the Stormstout Brewery, where they repelled the Legion invaders and detoxed the diseased brewers. Although they managed to defeat the nathrezim, Varagol informed them that the poisoned brew had already made its way to the Wandering Isle.[42] With the help of Brewer Almai and the spirit of Blanche, a cure was eventually made and the affected monks were able to recover from the fel poison.[43]

During the Argus Campaign, the monks were present on Argus under the Grandmaster's orders, and protected the Vindicaar from the Legion at Darkfall Ridge. When Sargeras impaled Azeroth with his sword, gravely injuring its world-soul, a monk champion among other heroes drained the sword of its corruption with one of their artifacts, using it as a vessel for its vast power.[44]

Shadowlands

After the Fourth War, the order made its appearance in the Training Hall of Stormwind and the Barracks of Orgrimmar, with Juisheng Halfclaw, Katrina Long, and Huinli Wingpaw as monk trainers.

Organization

Following the Legion's invasion of the Peak of Serenity, the surviving monks evacuated on the nearby Wandering Isle, where they made the Temple of Five Dawns their new headquarters.

Leadership

The Order of the Broken Temple is under the leadership of the Grandmaster (or Grand Master),[9] a monk adventurer who succeded Grand Master Hight at the head of the unnamed order based at the Peak of Serenity in Pandaria. This decision was made by the masters of the order who judged them as someone who had shown strength, wisdom, courage, valor, and kindness beyond measure.[1] Each senior master is at the head of a monk discipline whose names represent each of the August Celestials:

The champions of the Broken Temple are chosen by the Grandmaster to carry out perilous missions and act as representatives of the order.[45]

Membership

The Broken Temple's scouting map.

The ranks of the Order of the Broken Temple are made of monks of various races from all over Azeroth. Among ther recruiters, Tianji is a renowned trainer in the ox school style of martial combat.[12] Gin Lai is a monk famed for his experience in the ways of the tiger, who train initiates to strike swiftly and precisely on the field of battle.[14] They also received training from Instructor Mossthorn of the Shang Xi's Academy.

In order to devise their strategies and missions on the Broken Isles, Master Hsu had set up a scouting map in the Temple of Five Dawns for the Grandmaster.[10][11]

On the battlefield, the order deploy Ox Initiates, Ox Adepts, Ox Masters, Tiger Initates, Tiger Adepts, Tiger Masters, and Masters of Serenity.[46]

As a well-respected scholar, Number Nine Jia used her knowledge to help improve the order hall after many of her important scrolls were recovered from the Peak of Serenity.[47][48]

Lorewalker Cho and his researchers[49] are in charge of learning more about the artifacts' lore and power,[50] and record the information into The Chronicle of Ages.

The innkeeper Lao Shu is in charge of the order's supply inventory at the Laughing Crane inn of Mandori Village.[25]

The Forge of the Roaring Mountain allows one with great focus to shape chi within magical objects, notably for the Grandmaster to improve the abilities of their artifacts.[51]
