Death Knight Campaign
The Death Knight Campaign is the main questline for the death knight class in the World of Warcraft: Legion expansion.
Story summary
Introduction
Upon arriving in Dalaran above the Broken Isles, the death knight adventurer was asked to meet with Duke Lankral in Krasus' Landing.[1] The duke explained that the Knights of the Ebon Blade will ally with Lich King Bolvar Fordragon and will act as his arm. In return, the Lich King offered them to assist in obtaining powerful artifacts: the Maw of the Damned, Blades of the Fallen Prince, and Apocalypse.[2]
Obtaining the artifacts
To obtain the Maw of the Damned, the adventurer arrived to the Darkstone Isle on the Broken Shore to assist a previous Ebon Blade group led by Margrave Dhakar to kill Gorelix the Fleshripper, a powerful demon responsible for the annihilation of several worlds. Taking a portal, the adventurer arrived on Niskara and found Baron Sliver. Together, they fought their way through the Legion world and briefly spotted Margrave Dhakar. Then they found and rescued Minerva Ravensorrow and Dagnar Stonebrow. They continued to Gorelix's citadel where they witnessed the demon kill Dhakar. The group eventually managed to kill Gorelix, and the adventurer took the Maw Of the Damned. Then they returned back to Azeroth.[3]
To obtain the Blades of the Fallen Prince, the adventurer traveled to the Icecrown Citadel where they fought against wandering ghosts of previously-trapped souls from Frostmourne: Baelgun Flamebeard, Halahk, Magroth the Defender, and Gavinrad. At the Frozen Throne, the adventurer found the remains of the Frostmourne, which were reforged into the Blades of the Fallen Prince. However, the blades contained malevolent souls, so the death knight entered it and witnessed echoes of Ner'zhul and Arthas Menethil. After defeating the spirits and the echo of Arthas, the adventurer claimed the Blades.[4]
To obtain Apocalypse, the adventurer found the priest Revil Kost in Duskwood. After convincing him of their intentions (either through reason or force),[5] the two fought side by side against the Dark Riders.[6] They traveled to Ariden's Camp to find clues about the artifacts that the Dark Riders had stolen,[7] and the adventurer then proceeded to an area near Karazhan where he raised Laith Sha'ol who revealed that the stolen artifacts are in Karazhan Catacombs.[8] Entering the catacombs, the two defeated the spirits there, overcame obstacles, and eventually faced off Ariden, leader of the Dark Riders. The adventurer then took Apocalypse and parted ways with Revil who admitted that the Dark Riders were defeated, but they might return, and that working with the death knight proved him as a valuable ally.[9]
Deathlord of the Ebon Blade
With the powerful artifact in hand, the adventurer appeared in the Frozen Throne and agreed on their alliance with Lich King Bolvar.
The adventurer then returned to Acherus: The Ebon Hold hovering above the Broken Shore. There, Highlord Darion Mograine named them the Deathlord of the Ebon Blade, with the Knights of the Ebon Blade bowing to him.
The Deathlord worked on empowering their artifact weapon with Corvus, improving Acherus with Archivist Zubashi, as well as dealing with the Legion on the Broken Isles and recruiting new troops and champions with Siouxsie the Banshee.
The Four Horsemen
The Lich King ordered the Deathlord to raise new Four Horsemen to serve the Ebon Blade and fight against the Legion. The first target was to be the fallen general of the Horde, Nazgrim. Thassarian and the Deathlord traveled to the Dranosh'ar Blockade in Durotar and raised Nazgrim as the first horseman.[10][11]
The Lich King ordered for the next horseman to be the legendary Stromgarde king, Thoras Trollbane. Thassarian and Nazgrim thus traveled to Stromgarde Keep, now under the control of Galen Trollbane and his undead citizens.[12] The death knights entered into negotiations with the prince who wanted to fully control the city. The Deathlord went to the mage district of Stromgarde and defeated the Witherbark trolls led by Ojin'ba. When the deed was done, however, Galen betrayed them.[13] The death knights overwhelmed Stromgarde guards and eventually killed Galen. With the prince dead and Trol'kalar reclaimed,[14] the way to Thoras' crypt was open, and the Deathlord resurrected the king as the second horseman.[15]
Upon returning to Acherus, Thassarian asked the Deathlord for a personal favor. He explained that a fellow death knight Koltira Deathweaver is being held in the Undercity, and that Sylvanas Windrunner had ignored any attempts on negotiations for his freedom. As such, Thassarian now wanted to infiltrate the Forsaken city and rescue Koltira. Forcing their way through the Sewers and into the Apothecarium, they killed Gurgoth and freed Koltira.[16]
The next horseman who the Lich King chose was High Inquisitor Sally Whitemane from the Scarlet Monastery. So the Deathlord, Thassarian, Nazgrim, and Thoras invaded the monastery,[17] killed several crusaders[18] and raised ghouls.[19] High Commander Goodchilde guarded the cathedral, and the Ebon Blade killed him as well.[20] With the final obstacle removed, the Deathlord raised Sally as the third horseman.[21]
Steeds of the Damned
As the Deathlord was gaining new troops and champions, Siouxsie also ordered for Salanar the Horseman to return from the Shadowlands to Acherus. Salanar was to work on obtaining dread steeds for the new Four Horsemen.[22]
Salanar asked for the first set of necessary components for conjuring the steeds,[23] the saddle of Deathcharger from Stratholme,[24] a shadow reins from Dark Rider Ghrave in the Shadowlands,[25] the saddle of the Invincible from Icecrown,[26] the saddle from Midnight in Karazhan,[27] and the saddle used by Sir Thomas from the Scarlet Monastery.[28] Later, he requested the Braid of the Underking from Neltharion's Lair[29] and a Nightmare Lash from Darkheart Thicket.[30]
The final components for the steeds were found in the Shadowlands: Essence of Shadow from Soulbinder Nyami,[31] Essence of Fear from Grand Empress Shek'zeer,[32] Essence of Hatred from Daelin Proudmoore,[33] Essence of Undeath from Putress,[34] and Essence of Darkness from Arugal.[35]
The majority of the items were collected, but Salanar needed one last item - the Maul of the Dead from Helya in Helheim.[36]
Champions of the Deathlord
The Horsemen as well as Thassarian and Koltira served the Deathlord as his champions, embarking on various missions across the battlefields on the Broken Isles. Lord Thorval now worked on a new soldier for the Deathlord and required ingredients from the Vault of the Wardens. After obtaining them, he created a unique abomination called Rottgut.[37] Queen Azshara created the Frozen Soul Pendant and was now in the Eye of Azshara. Amal'thazad demanded to retrieve it. As a show of gratitude, the lich offered his services to the battlefield.[38]
The Fourth Horseman
The time for the final horseman to raise has come, and the Lich King deemed the recently-deceased Tirion Fordring to be the fourth horseman, acting as their leader. To that end, the Darion and the horsemen were sent to invade the Light's Hope Chapel. After creating chaos, on the chapel grounds, the horsemen strangulated Maxwell Tyrosus, and the Deathlord entered the Sanctum of Light, defeating soldiers stationed there. The Tomb of Highlord Tirion Fordring was defended by Lady Liadrin who was defeated.
The remaining horsemen and Darion then joined the Deathlord as they were about to raise Tirion. As the Deathlord started to cast the resurrection spell, the Light filled the room, choking the death knights. Not wanting to Ebon Blade to fall, Darion summoned a death gate for the Deathlord and the horsemen to escape. From his last power, he pulled the Deathlord into the portal, and back on Acherus succumbed to his wounds. The Lich King suddenly ordered Darion to be raised again, this time as the fourth horseman. After he was raised, he gladly accepted the position as the leader of the Four Horsemen.[39] By infusing the gathered resources and the claimed souls with the Soul Forge, the Deathlord then increased their artifact's power.[40]
