Shalewing
Shalewings are a type of elemental ray found underground in the Dragon Isles, Khaz Algar and Undermine. Despite being made mostly of rock, these creatures can fly.[1] Some attribute this to the strength of their wings, but most agree it's probably just magic.[2] Flaming shalewings[3] are born from the magma; their carapace is molten blobs cooled to form volcanic rock.[4] Shalewings defecate guanite which is purported to have incredible potential as a reagent for crafting explosives.[5]
In Zaralek Cavern they are trained by both the Niffen of Loamm and the Zaqali tribe of djaradin. The niffen generally use them as mounts, though some are trained as beasts of burden[6] or to find the deepest of morsels.[7] The djaradin use them as hunting beasts.
In Undermine, some shalewings are considered pests and are known for their cantankerous attitudes and affinity for nesting in the smokestacks of buildings, much to the locals' dismay.[8]
