Clan Shikaar is one of the four major Maruuk centaur clans of the Ohn'ahran Plains. They specialize in honing their skills and hunting game across the plains,[1] and are led by Sansok Khan.

History

The Shikaar caravan preparing to leave Timberstep Outpost.

When the Dragon Isles reawakened, the Shikaar were preparing to assemble with the other clans at the Khural in Maruukai. The last Shikaar caravan to travel to the city was the one from Timberstep Outpost, which included Sansok Khan herself.[2] The outpost was being harassed by the neighboring Mudfin gorlocs, who raided the Shikaar's supplies and dognapped their bakar companions.[3][4] The Primalist leader Koroleth approached Sansok and tried to recruit her, but the khan refused.[5] At the same time, adventurers came to the Ohn'ahran Plains to make contact with the green dragonflight. They encountered the Shikaar Scout Tomul, who made the outsiders prove themselves by helping a Shikaar hunting party kill a Blazing Proto-Dragon[6] before bringing them to Timberstep Outpost and introducing them to Sansok. The khan agreed to let the adventurers come along on the journey to Maruukai if they lent their aid to the clan,[7] whose members were initially wary of the outsiders.[2]

The adventurers helped the two Shikaar Farrier Roscha and Khasar deal with the Mudfin gorlocs by retrieving the stolen supplies,[8] rescuing the missing bakar,[9] and killing the gorlocs' leader, Chief Grrlgllmesh.[10]

The outsiders accompanied the caravan from Timberstep Outpost to Maruukai, sharing stories[11] and helping them hunt meat for the Khural on the way.[12] On arrival in Maruukai, Sansok sent the outsiders to acquaint themselves with the other major clans[13][14][15] before the green dragonflight's emissary Gemisath arrived to the Khural.[16] Khanam Matra Sarest promised to aid the green flight against the Primalists, but the gathering was disrupted when Clan Nokhud revealed that they had allied with the Primalists and attacked the other clans. The Shikaar's hunters fought alongside the Ohn'ir mystics and the Teerai khansguard to defend the city from the Nokhud,[17] after which the Khanam Matra told Sansok and Tigari Khan to prepare their clans to go to war against the traitors.[18]

Culture

The Shikaar are the strongest hunters of the Maruuk. Their camps are spread throughout the Ohn'ahran Plains, following the patterns of wildlife and game.[11] They are less concerned with tradition than Clan Ohn'ir and instead pride themselves on mastery in their own crafts.[19] They enjoy telling stories of their kills.[11] After completing their first hint, young Shikaar hunters are gifted with a ceremonial spear.[20] The Shikaar's hunters traditionally provide meat for all of the shared meals at the Khural by hunting game on their way to Maruukai.[12] The Shikaar wear medallions which are adorned with the clan's symbol and can be crafted from leather obtained during their first hunt.[21] When they join Ohn'ahra in the sky (i.e. when they die), they leave the medallions behind.[22]

The Shikaar keep herds of domesticated argali[23] and musken[24] and use bakar and ohuna as hunting companions and herding animals. The bakar serve as the Shikaar's fellow hunters, guards, and best friends, and each one holds a special place in the clan.[9] The Shikaar give their bakar collars, which can be adorned with the dogs' puppy teeth and bone ornaments from their first hunt.[25] On the other hand, the ohuna's relationship to the clan is transient since the birds do not answer to the centaur, but to the sky. Each spring, an ohuna chooses a new hunter to accompany, and each winter they return to their kin. The Shikaar consider it an honor to hunt alongside them.[26]

If an outsider wants to impress the Shikaar, they must prove their worth by showing their hunting skills.[27] Doing so earns them a place at the clan's campfire.[28][29]

Most Shikaar know sign language and can therefore talk directly to their deaf leader Sansok Khan, but there are still many who cannot and require the help of Sansok's interpreter Okir.[30]

Shikaar hunters can also be found in the Azure Span and Thaldraszus on Grand Hunts.

Notes

  • Like the other Maruuk clans, Clan Shikaar is considered a separate reputation faction by the game, but this is only for display purposes to indicate which NPCs are members of the clan. It is not possible to earn separate reputation with them.
