“I feel compelled by some... experience I cannot fully fathom yet to reveal the truth to you all. If there is to be a brave new future, honesty is essential - and I have not been honest with myself, or any of you. Therefore... yes, I am a dragon. A blue dragon, to be precise. I have hidden my true self behind this mask you see for the last four hundred years, choosing to live and work among the mortal races for the betterment of all, as others of my kind have done... and to protect against those of my kind who seek to bring destruction, as the Spellweaver and the Destroyer had done. Many have long suspected, but it has been dismissed as the talk of drink-loosened tongues. I choose to end that gossip now.”

Eregesh Silvergale is the public "face" of the blue dragon Esheregos, who had distanced himself from his reclusive (and then insane) Aspect centuries before. His true identity was suspected among the patrons of the Ledgerdemain Lounge in Dalaran, but is often dismissed as drunken fantasy. After the war for the Shadowlands, guided by dreams of what lay ahead, he felt compelled to reveal himself.

Biography

The man known in Dalaran as Eregesh Silvergale is an enigma, even among the ranks of the elves. Although he has been part of the Kirin Tor for close to four hundred years, little is actually known about him. From what little he has said of himself, he is an orphan, his parents killed in an Amani attack when he was a child, and was raised by a magister in Silvermoon. The facts, however, are muddied somewhat by the fact that the magister - and indeed any record pertaining to his claims - were lost when the Scourge destroyed Silvermoon and Dalaran during the Third War.

Eregesh traveled across the sea with Jaina Proudmoore before Dalaran's fall and settled in Theramore, where he remained for several years while the Kirin Tor was rebuilt under the aegis of Rhonin. When Dalaran took to the skies and prepared to teleport to Northrend to serve as the staging area for the war against the Lich King, Eregesh left Theramore and rejoined the Kirin Tor.

Eregesh in Coldarra during the Nexus War

Eregesh has developed an extensive knowledge of draconic lore during his centuries in Dalaran, so much so that he has often been suspected of being one himself. Eregesh himself just laughs at the idea, but the gossip continues to live in the Ledgerdemain Lounge whenever he is in Dalaran. Regardless of "who he really is", he put his knowledge to good use during the Nexus War in Northrend - fighting Malygos' forces in Coldarra in the Borean Tundra, and slaying the blue dragon Iskanigos in a grueling fight in the Storm Peaks - and again during the Cataclysm, battling the children of Deathwing. He has also made a study of the elemental dragons unleashed from Skywall during the Cataclysm and the Thorignir of Stormheim during the Legion war.

During the war for the Shadowlands, Eregesh allied with the night fae of Ardenweald, partly motivated by the fact that Ysera the Dreamer, the Aspect of the green dragonflight who had fallen in Val'sharah, had been reborn there in service to the Winter Queen - an appropriate patroness for Eregesh, given his frost magics. After the war, he returned to Dalaran, where he ultimately revealed a truth he had been hiding for decades - and which many had already suspected...

The Real Story

Esheregos in the Storm Peaks, after slaying his brother Iskanigos

Born in the Nexus some five centuries before the opening of the Dark Portal, Esheregos was a restless soul. Malygos had been in seclusion for millennia, ever since the near-extinction of the blue dragonflight at the hands of Deathwing during the War of the Ancients. Unlike his brother Iskanigos, who sat in the Nexus and waited on Malygos' every whim like a clingy child, Esheregos preferred to explore beyond Coldarra.

Seeking to integrate himself in mortal society, Esheregos gravitated first to Silvermoon, where he took an elven form and named himself Eregesh (an anagram of sorts of his proper name). He appeared at first as a child, claiming to have been orphaned in an Amani attack, and was raised by a magister (whose name he never discovered), who recognized his natural magical talents. Naturally, those talents leaned to frost magics, favored by the blue flight. In time, the magister sent him to Dalaran, believing that the Kirin Tor could teach him far better than he. Centuries later, the magister would die at the hands of the Scourge. Among Esheregos' chief regrets was that he never knew his name and that he never revealed his true self to him, somebody he believed would understand and believe his reasons.

Sensing the danger of the impending Legion invasion, Esheregos was drawn to Jaina Proudmoore, who led refugees from Lordaeron, Dalaran, and other northern nations across the sea to Kalimdor, establishing the port city of Theramore. He participated in the Battle of Mount Hyjal (maintaining his identity as Eregesh throughout), and settled in as a resident of Theramore, somewhat aloof but ever willing to help. When Dalaran was restored and made its way to Northrend, Esheregos returned to the Kirin Tor, having heard rumors that all was not well with his flight.

To his horror, he found that Malygos had emerged from his seclusion with the intention of wiping out all magic users who refused to submit to him, believing that they were responsible for all the world's ills; Dalaran became his principal target. Esheregos sorrowfully turned on the father of his flight, believing Malygos to have gone just as mad as Deathwing. It was this decision that ultimately made him an enemy of his own brother, Iskanigos, and the two dragons clashed in the skies over the Storm Peaks. Although Iskanigos was stronger, centuries among mortals had given Esheregos a few tricks up his proverbial sleeve, and he struck down his vengeful brother, his body crashing into the great canyon that separated Ulduar from the rest of the mountain range. Grieving but resolute, Esheregos took the great curving horns from Iskanigos' head as a memento of the brother he knew.

News of the battle - of which he presented the evidence in his "masked form" of Eregesh - cemented his reputation in Dalaran, for he had become known as an expert in draconic lore during his long service to the Kirin Tor... leading some to suspect, while deep in their cups, that he had an insider's knowledge.

Following the war for the Shadowlands, Esheregos ultimately decided to toss away his "mask" and reveal his true self, beginning with his apprentice, the goblin archmage Kelty Sparkleblast, who fainted on the spot. Next, after explaining himself to Kalecgos, he went before the Council of Six in Dalaran, and said he wanted to put all the barroom gossip to rest by admitting the truth - yes, he was a dragon. "If there is to be a brave new future, honesty is essential," he said in his confession, and submitted to the judgment of the Kirin Tor, fully expecting to be banished. He was surprised when he was accepted - begrudgingly, it had to be said (some members of the Kirin Tor grumbling about "dragons in their soup"), but the Council took his past service to the Kirin Tor into account.

Eshergos' decision to reveal his true self was not spontaneous. For weeks after the fall of the Jailer, he had been haunted by strange visions or memories he could not fully explain, showing islands he had never seen before in his life, and the skies filled with the wings of his fellow dragons. What this portent meant, he did not know... yet. However, he felt that whatever was coming, it would involve dragonkind, and he believed there would come a time where he and his kin could no longer hide behind masks.
