Kalimos the Unforgiven is an eredar warlock, one of the last few who have not been banished forever into oblivion. Slain on Argus during the Legion's final campaign against Azeroth, his essence somehow made its way to that world - where it has been reborn...

Biography

Kalimos on Argus during the invasion by the Army of the Light

Kalimos was an apprentice sorcerer when Sargeras first came to Argus many eons ago, offering the eredar a place of honor in his Burning Legion to spread unity and order throughout the cosmos. When Sargeras proved to be a force of destruction and chaos instead, Kalimos did not turn back. He had actually grown bored with "keeping things orderly", believing the concept of order to be an artificial construct. "Fire is a natural purgative, meant to be embraced, not extinguished," he once put it - and not surprisingly, he is a wielder of fire magics, empowered with his natural affinity for the fel.

Throughout the Burning Crusade, Kalimos was an agent of Talgath, the chief lieutenant of Kil'jaeden. The Deceiver's charge from Sargeras was to corrupt mortal civilizations into the Legion's service, and he often turned to Talgath to aid him in that endeavor. Particularly bloodthirsty even for his kind, Kalimos chafed at the idea of playing in the shadows, preferring to facing some kind of resistance from those civilizations... because that meant wiping them out, and that meant more fun for him. He reveled in the bloodshed - and more importantly, the suffering - that resulted.

The Legion's path ultimately led to Azeroth, the only world that had managed to successfully repel a Legion invasion... twice. Kalimos was intrigued by this; though he enjoyed a good slaughter as much as the next person, it was much more entertaining when the prey fought back. His hubris would ultimately be his downfall. When the Talgathi arrived on Argus just after Kil'jaeden's death, Kalimos found himself facing the orc warlock Urgan, a former servant of Gul'dan who had recently returned after years in a soulstone. He soon found himself on the receiving end of the Corruptor's killing flame, the last thought being a sense of admiration that someone could be powerful enough to kill him... and rage that he would not have his chance at revenge... because the mortals, against all odds, would prevail. Illidan, Khadgar, and the Army of the Light had already besieged Antorus by that time, and for the first time, Kalimos believed the Legion would be defeated.

But unlike Kil'jaeden, Talgath, and the others, whose deaths proved to be final, Kalimos endured; perhaps by some sense of hatred, or simple willpower, even he did not know. His essence traversed the Nether following his death, and somehow made its way through the open tear in reality to Azeroth before the rift sealed itself. There, it was contained in a vessel by the Nightborne warlock Aldos Relsyn, a servant of Elisande who had escaped from Suramar when the "Armies of Legionfall" seized the Nighthold and killed the Grand Magistrix and her loyalists. Relsyn realized what he had discovered, and kept the essence preserved to regain its strength. What motivated him to preserve and maintain the eredar's essence, rather than consume it, not even Kalimos knows for sure.

Kalimos summoned in spirit form in the Dragon Isles

Years passed, and finally, Kalimos' essence was reawakened fully - in a ruined draconic tower in the Azure Span on the Dragon Isles. Relsyn and his mentor, the mechagnome Professor Rakeri Sputterspark, hoped to benefit from Kalimos' vast eons of experience and provide it to their colleagues in the Council of the Black Harvest. The two warlocks offered their aid to restore his physical form, but at first, Kalimos did not believe such an effort worth it; the Burning Crusade was over, Kil'jaeden and Talgath were dead, and Sargeras locked away forever by the Pantheon. But Rakeri, never one for submission to others anyway, told him that he would be more than just a tool if he offered his services and knowledge to the Council... and sweetened the deal by promising vengeance against the Corruptor for killing him. Urgan's latest plan involved the creation of a cult he called the "Eightfold Path", a concept Kalimos had encountered many times before, and indeed had embraced himself when he joined the Legion - the concept of chaos and destruction as the natural state of being. Both warlocks were wary that the Corruptor's penchant for making enemies would attract "unwelcome attention" and conspired to remove him, with Relsyn to be tapped as the new master of the Path. Kalimos admitted admiration for the cruel twists of Rakeri's mind, and ultimately agreed to the proposal...
