Torcall Macphearsome is a gryphon rider of the Wildhammer clan who was raised in death by the Knights of the Ebon Blade to fight in the war for the Shadowlands.

Biography

Born in the village of Kirthaven in what is today known as the Twilight Highlands, Torcall was a gryphon rider of the Wildhammer clan in life, whose family adopted the name "Macphearsome" due to their reckless ferocity in battle. By tradition, a clansman of the family did not use the name openly until they had tamed their own gryphon and slain an enemy with their stormhammer. Torcall was what the humans would call a "late bloomer", but was doggedly determined to honor his family line and his clan, and succeeded in the trial. Torcall was one of the gryphon riders who followed the great Kurdran to Draenor (now Outland) and was trapped there for more than two decades. During that time, he worked alongside an elf Farstrider named Araen Duskwalker, and they regularly hunted together in the woods of Terokkar.

Returning to the Highlands with Kurdran during the Cataclysm, Torcall found much had changed both at home and for him particularly, and he decided to relocate to Stormwind. During the Fourth War, he was part of an aerial reconnaissance party during the siege of Dazar'alor when he and his gryphon, Skyfeather, were brought down by a Zandalari ballista, plunging into the water just beyond the port of Zandalar. The other Wildhammers were unable to bring the bodies back to Mount Thunderstrike for ritual burial... because someone else got to them first.

Torcall awoke in a dark hall, knowing he had died, yet still conscious and aware. He realized he had been raised in undeath by the Knights of the Ebon Blade and flew into a rage, grabbing the nearest impliments he could find and smashing through the skeletal "help" in the Ebon Hold. When his rage subsided, he collapsed to his knees in the middle of Acherus' central hall and whispered a question: "Why?"

"Because your rage is needed for what is to come," was the answer he received, from a pandaren standing nearby in a Shado-Pan headscarf. He introduced himself as Zhaoren Deathtide, and explained that while he was new too, he had adjusted far sooner than Torcall, and would be his instructor. Knowing he could never go home again, Torcall again demanded to know why, but Zhaoren said only, "In due time."

When the sky above Icecrown split, Torcall learned the answer.
