Baron Kieran Devaneaux is a former Scarlet Crusader who continues to wear his rotted, bloody armor in the service of the Forsaken, having fought in every conflict since the war for Northrend.

Biography

Kieran Devaneaux was born in Lordaeron some years before the First War. His father, Baron Artimus Devaneaux, was a vassal of the House of Barov in Caer Darrow, and augmented his family's fortune as a pit fighter (and, according to some, an assassin for hire), particularly in the era after the Second War when the orcs were held in captivity.

Following the fall of Lordaeron, Kieran had fled to Southshore when he was visited by a messenger wearing red leather and a tabard with a scarlet flame on it. He had been sent by Artimus from Tyr's Hand to recruit him into the Scarlet Crusade, which had been formed by former Knights of the Silver Hand and their allies to fight against the Scourge in the Plaguelands. Artimus eventually rose to the rank of Scarlet Commander, and Kieran was one of his best warriors, until killed in a Scourge attack near the monastery in Tirisfal. But he did not rest easy, and found himself raised in undeath... and not in the control of the Scourge, either.

Frightened and desperate, Kieran wandered Tirisfal Glades aimlessly, believing soon he would become a mindless ghoul... until he wandered into the village of Brill, where his father had once served as a magistrate. To his astonishment, the Forsaken - free undead now in the service of the Horde - welcomed him, and helped him adjust to his new status. He later learned that his father had become a death knight, first in the service of the Scourge, then freed at Light's Hope and joining the Alliance for the coming war in Northrend. Kieran took great pains to conceal his existence from Artimus, letting him believe he was still dead - thinking that neither of them needed a distraction from their mission against the Scourge. He saw his father briefly (and from a distance) in Northrend, and never again after that. He learned some years later that Artimus had fallen during the Cataclysm.

While in Northrend, Kieran served in the Forsaken forces against the vrykul in the Howling Fjord and against the "Scarlet Onslaught" - those few Crusaders who had escaped from the Eastern Plaguelands before the death knights wiped them out - in the Dragonblight, all while wearing his old Scarlet tabard and chainmail, revelling in the "delicious irony". While in the Grizzly Hills, he learned of the threat posed by what the druids and shamans called "Yogg-Saron" beneath the roots of the fallen World Tree Vordrassil. That path ultimately led him into the Storm Peaks to the halls of Ulduar, an experience he considered "transcendent" - awakening an interest in Titan lore that would serve him in good stead years later.
