Vyranoth the Frozenheart is one of the four Primal Incarnates. Along with her brethren, she rejected the gift of the titans and turned to the elements instead, becoming an incarnation of frost. Before doing so, she was an old friend of Alexstrasza the Dragon Queen from the days before the titans uplifted the dragons. Having left her fellow Incarnates because of how far they were willing to go, after the events of Amirdrassil, the Dream's Hope Vyranoth was blessed by Azeroth and became the sixth Dragon Aspect. She has dubbed herself the Aspect of Storms, in reverence for her fallen sister, Raszageth, as well as the storms that were the homes of the two flights she represents, the Netherwing and the Thorignir.

Her visage form is an elemental.[2]

History

War of the Scaleborn

WoW-novel-logo-16x62.png This section concerns content related to the Warcraft novels, novellas, or short stories.

Vyranoth was old and dear friends with Alexstrasza. Her den was in the Frozen Fangs, an ice and snow-covered region on the northern coast of northern Kalimdor.[3]

While the proto-dragons who would become known as the Dragon Aspects accepted the gift of the titans, the proto-dragons who would become the Primal Incarnates rejected it. Tensions rose between the Primalists who wished to cleanse the world of the titans' "stain" and the dragonflights,[4] Vyranoth was the last Primal Incarnate to join, and the last to imbue herself with elemental energy. Though she always distrusted the titans and keepers, her friendship with Alexstrasza had convinced her to initially try and give the ordered dragons a chance despite her misgivings. Early into the Aspects' rule, Vyranoth made Alexstrasza promise to her that dragons being infused with Order magic would always be a choice and never be forced on someone.[3]

Open war between the primal and ordered dragons broke out about 20,000 years ago,[5] when Raszageth struck first by leading an assault on Neltharion and his dracthyr army on the Forbidden Reach.[6] In the battle, she destroyed Oathbinder, the titan relic that Neltharion was using to control the dracthyr. This caused Neltharion to give in to the Old Gods for the first time and use their power to seal her away within the Froststone Vault.[7] It was only after her friend Raszageth was imprisoned that Vyranoth became an Incarnate. What finally convinced Vyranoth to join the Incarnates was a combination of that, and the revelation that Alexstrasza had broken her promise to Vyranoth and allowed the kidnapping of proto-dragon eggs to imbue with Order magic.[3]

A cataclysmic conflict ensued between Primalists and dragonflights known as the War of the Scaleborn and lasted for more than a century. Vyranoth and Fyrakk were ever loyal to the Incarnate's ideals, but Iridikron truly embraced the war. At the end, he struck terrible bargains to keep their cause alive. Alexstrasza believes the other incarnates never knew the true depths of his depravity.[8] Vyranoth was the third Incarnate to be defeated. Several decades after Fyrakk was imprisoned, Alexstrasza challenged Vyranoth to single combat in her home, the Frozen Fangs. The duel was violent, and both old friends were near death when it was over. Unable to kill Vyranoth, Alexstrasza begged her to surrender, which Vyranoth eventually did. Green dragons put her into a magical sleep and she was brought to the Vault of the Incarnates to be imprisoned.[9]

Imprisoned in the Vault of the Incarnates.

The war would wage on for several decades more but finally ended with Iridikron imprisoned. After the end of the fighting Alexstrasza traveled to the Vault of the Incarnates and spoke to the slumbering Vyranoth, telling her it didn't feel like a victory without her. Unknown to Alexstrasza, Vyranoth did hear her.[10][11]

Dragonflight

20,000 years later, Raszageth the Storm-Eater schemed to release her kin from the Vault. Though Raszageth died, she succeeded in her endeavor, and Iridikron, Fyrakk, and Vyranoth were released. Seeing how Raszageth's haste led to her downfall, Alexstrasza speculated that the Incarnates would take their time to gather their strengths first, and that Iridikron's mastery of the earth would harbor them in the meantime.[8]

Fyrakk was eager to take revenge for their sister, but Iridikron did not want to rush in and believed they needed to even the scales with the Aspects first. The Incarnates adventured to the Forbidden Reach as the last echoes of Raszageth's storm faded, where they breached an ancient vault belonging to Neltharion and found a device that would give them the location of Zaralek Cavern, the Earth-Warder's secret underground. They had no interest in the laboratory of Aberrus itself, but in the molten fire that could be found below. Scalecommander Sarkareth and the Sundered Flame followed behind them secretly to claim Neltharion's legacy.[12]

They found one of the hidden entry points to Zaralek right below Valdrakken, where they broke through the ground and sent Fyrakk down, blazing through the earth, to claim the elemental power below and wake the djaradin's Elders at the Zaqali Caldera.[13]

Some time later, Vyranoth met with her old friend Alexstrasza within the Waking Shores. During this Vyranoth reflected on how Alexstrasza spoke to her after her imprisonment, recalling how the Dragon Queen had said that it "didn't feel like a victory without her." However, Vyranoth was enraged, recalling how Alexstrasza promised to not force the titan's will upon them and then did nothing when they warped the children, still in the shell of their eggs. In response, Alexstrasza declared that it was an abhorrent act that never should have occurred and that she regretted her part in it every day. She then mentioned that while Vyranoth had always fought for the good of dragonkind, Iridikron did not and simply craved vengeance. However Vyranoth was unmoved, called her naïve, declared that all that remained was vengeance, and departed.[10]

After the events of the Dawn of the Infinite, Iridikron departed and left the war against the Aspects to Fyrakk and Vyranoth. However, Vyranoth grew weary of Fyrakk as he had become increasingly more and more unhinged; setting his sights on the nascent world tree, Amirdrassil. The two even briefly clashed when Fyrakk tried to burn Gerithus, as she was more focused on removing the titans' iron grip on this world over causing harm to their enemies.[14] Some time after this, the two reunited at Lunedane, where she discovered that Fyrakk had struck a bargain with the Druids of the Flame, where they agreed to open the way to the Emerald Dream on the condition that Fyrakk ensured that they would become immortal. However, she was displeased and feared that the Primalists were losing sight of their goals, a concern that Fyrakk waved away as he revealed that there was something he wanted her to see.[15] She was subsequently shocked to see that the druids of the flame and Fyrakk using their fire magics and the shadowflame to corrupt Keeper Larodar and learned that Fyrakk that intended to do the same to Amirdrassil, a notion that disgusted her as she wanted to deny the aspects their prize and not twist it into some vile abomination. Fyrakk was unmoved and declared that they couldn't win the war bound by her ideals. In response, Vyranoth declared that the course was set and the pair departed from Lunedane.[16]

Alexstrasza imploring Vyranoth to work with them to defend Amirdrassil.

Vyranoth then made her way to Valdrakken, where she was stopped by Captain Drine, but the Primal Incarnate demanded to speak with Alexstrasza. Upon the Dragon Queen's arrival, Vyranoth revealed that Fyrakk intended to not destroy the World Tree as the Aspects thought, but to claim its power as his own as a reflection of his heart which has become cruel, blazing with insatiable malice, and wreathed in shadow. After denouncing him as her brother, Vyranoth prepared to depart when Alexstrasza implored her to stand by their side. Astonished by such a request, she demanded to know why she should, to which Alexstrasza pointed out that she was a protector of his world while acknowledging her own past failings and asked that she stand with them for all of dragonkind. After a moment, Vyranoth wordlessly followed Alexstrasza silently agreeing to her old friend's request.[17]

Guardians of the Dream

After establishing an understanding and trust with Alexstrasza, Vyranoth joined the Dragon Queen and the Dream Wardens to help protect Amirdrassil from Fyrakk.[18] At the Central Encampment, Vyranoth convened with Alexstrasza, Merithra, Tyrande Whisperwind, and Wrathion to discuss Fyrakk's decision to abandon his attack on Amirdrassil.[19] Vyranoth warned that Fyrakk would return as he couldn't control himself for long, while Alexstrasza deferred to Merithra as to how they should defend her realm. Merithra declared that they must know if their enemies sought other places within the Dream, like the Wellspring Temple and the Eye of Ysera. As Tyrande and adventurers sought out the Druids of the Flame to uncover their aims, Merithra sought to learn more about the Primalists from Vyranoth.[20] After the pair returned, Merithra expressed her confusion as to why Fyrakk was holding back and placed his troops away from his goal of claiming Amirdrassil. Vyranoth revealed that Fyrakk craved power, the power to subjugate, and that whatever he was planning, it was a means to that end. When Alexstrasza declared that they had to go and observe his soldiers and learn what they were up to, Merithra started to object, only for Vyranoth to declare Fyrakk was her responsibility now.[21]

While heading off to investigate a primalists camp in the north of the Dream, Vyranoth reunited with Buri, one of her claws, who defected from the Primalists to serve her once more.[22] Knowing that the Primalists weren't organized, Vyranoth sent champions to infiltrate their camp and search for any information as to what Fyrakk was planning. This allowed Vyranoth to learn that while Buri had remained loyal to her, Lethka had chosen to side with Fyrakk and sought to destroy Cinder Summit.[23] Following this, Vyranoth admitted that she hadn't informed anyone of her intentions when she chose to go to Alexstrasza. She further revealed that she was happy to see her old guard and was glad that they were willing to return to her side. After Buri informed her that Fyrakk was interested in the Wellspring of Life and was last seen with Terro, Vyranoth set off to reunite with another of her claws. While Buri and the champion were able to rally other Primalists to her side, she discovered that Lethka had murdered Terro for preferring the Frozenheart over the Fyrakk. Lethka further accused her of abandoning them to her regrets, while Fyrakk continued on the path to victory.[24][25]

Determined to avenge Terro, Vyranoth gave chase, while Buri and the champions sought out the last claw Suzska. The pair subsequently learned that Fyrakk sought to corrupt the Wellspring with his flames in order to burn all of Azeroth. The champion was then sent to Suzska, who after declaring that Fyrakk was not sound enough to lead an attack and his plan was doomed to fail, realigned with Vyranoth.[26][27] Suzska further revealed that the power within the Cinder Summit was powerful to either destroy the barrier around the wellspring or Vyranoth and thus champions to aid her. Upon reaching Vyranoth, it was revealed that the Frozenheart was using her power to prevent Cinder Summit from exploding, and leaving the task of killing Lethka to them. While acknowledging that the deed had to be done, Vyranoth found that she couldn't celebrate the loss of a friend.[28]

With her loyal claws by her side, Vyranoth returned to Alexstrasza and the others and informed them that Fyrakk was after the Wellspring.[29]

Interested in meeting dragons that were never part of the Aspects and their flights, Vyranoth joined Wrathion and adventurers, as they met with Mordenaku of the Netherwing. During the meeting, Wrathion requested that Netherwing aid in the defense of Amirdrassil, causing Mordenaku to inquire as to what he would give in return. Vyranoth subsequently pointed out that with Outland being a harsh place the Netherwing would benefit from a safer home on the isles, and it was decided that the mountains of Thaldraszus would serve as their roost.[1] With this agreement the Netherwing formally joined Valdrakken Accord and the group set off towards the cave above the Sand-Lost Sanctum. Upon their arrival, Vyranoth declared that the cave had a commanding view of the surrounding land and was highly defensible. However as the state of it was unacceptable and filled with spiders, she sent adventurers teleporting the smaller ones away, while the egg sacs and bigger ones were dealt with more finality.[30] After the cave was successfully secured as the new Netherwing roost, Wrathion sought to ensure that the netherwing whelps would grow and flourish and thus declared that they must meet with Mother Elion at the Ruby Lifeshrine. However, Vyranoth remained behind to ensure the whelps were safe until the rest of the flight arrived.

Vyranoth freezes Odyn

With the safety and future of the netherwing secured, the group celebrated at the Roasted Ram. During this time Wrathion revealed Odyn's sordid history to Vyranoth and revealed his intention to recruit the Thorignir to adventurers.[31] While Mordenaku remained behind, the others entered a portal to Stormheim and met with Thrymjaris. The Thorignir Matriarch revealed that while they had heard the call to the isles, Odyn had dismissed it, and they felt honor bound to follow along. Outraged at Odyn's audacity Vyranoth led her accompanies into the Halls of Valor to confront him.[32] As the trio made their way through the Halls of Valor, Wrathion remarked that he didn't expect such an explosive response, only for Vyranoth to call him out on his lie, that he knew that she would not abide such hypocrisy, and to be glad that she was being diplomatic. After reaching Odyn, a fight ensured that ended with Odyn being frozen in place by Vyranoth, and the Frozenheart calling upon the Thorignir to make their own decisions.[33] In the aftermath, the trio returned to the Dream and saw that the netherwing and thorignir had arrived to aid them.

Vyranoth then continued fighting against Fyrakk's forces in the northern parts of the Dream. She requested the deaths of Calderamor and Ignarion[34] and was then present at the battles with Azeroth's heroes before the Wellspring temple. Ultimately, despite Fyrakk's efforts to corrupt the heart of Amirdrassil, the champions of Azeroth defeated the Blazing, allowing the World Tree to complete its blooming. However, in doing so, Azeroth herself blessed the Aspects, regaining their Aspectral powers, and Vyranoth was blessed as well. The Frozenheart stated that the power she felt was of their world, not of the titan's magic, yet was unlike anything she had ever felt. Alexstrazsa realized that what dragonkind truly needed was not their Aspectral powers but they needed to come together as a family, to be Her Aspects, to which all agreed.

After Fyrakk's death, Vyranoth came to look at Amirdrassil with her fellow Aspects when it bloomed on the Dragon Isles and then attended the gathering. Following the establishment of Bel'ameth, Vyranoth was with her fellow Aspects and remarked that while she did slightly regret Fyrakk's death, she lamented more on his fall to madness and of the Primalists' ideals, of their cause that she still considered a just one. In regards to Iridrikron, Vyranoth wondered if her brother ever cared for their cause but noted that the Stonescaled not being present when Fyrakk launched his attack showed Iridikron didn't care for either of them. For now, Vyranoth would continue to help guide dragonkind into its new future as the Aspect of Storms, with Alexstrasza offering counsel and guidance, welcoming Vyranoth's own counsel in return which was all she could ask for.

Seeds of Renewal

In the Seat of the Aspects.

Sometime after Amirdrassil fully bloomed, Vyranoth informed Azeroth's champions that she had received a message from Iridikron himself, requesting a parlay with her alone. She agreed and met with the Stonescaled in the snowy mountains of Valdrakken, where he condemned her for abandoning the Primalists' war. However, Vyranoth countered that it was her brother who abandoned the war and Fyrakk to his death for some "trinket" that Neltharion left behind. Iridikron clarified that the "Dark Heart" is no trinket and it was now in the hands of the Harbinger. Vyranoth voiced her disgust for his willingness to use the Void, stating that its power couldn't be trusted. Unmoved, Iridikron stated that he trusted the Void's hunger to aid him in removing the titan's "stain" from their world, before giving Vyranoth one last chance to join his cause. The former Frozenheart answered by proclaiming that she would have no part in his war, leaving the Stonescaled disappointed and angered, stating that the bond of the Incarnates was truly at an end. Iridikron then took his leave, but not before giving Vyranoth a final warning to stay out of his way.[35]

She later joined with her fellow Aspects and formally thanked Azeroth's champions for all they've done for dragonkind and named them, Champion of the Dragonflights.[36] She also thanks her sister Raszageth for the last time for giving her freedom and the reason for her title change.

Gossip

At the Ancient Bough

Speak if you must.

Gossip Why are you here?

Fyrakk has lost sight of our true aim. He seeks power and fire, not the liberation of dragonkind from the Titans' corruption.
Alexstrasza and I have spoken at length. We have achieved understanding and, I believe, trust.
Therefore, I am trusting both her and you as I endeavor to stop my brother from undoing all we have fought for.
Gossip Let's talk about something else.
At the Central Encampment, Emerald Dream

Fyrakk's assault on the Emerald Dream must be stopped.

Gossip Who are the Claws of Vyranoth?
During my time with the Primalists, I commanded an elite squadron of primal dragons. They were called the Claws of Vyranoth.
The four Claws were my most trusted soldiers. They all possessed extraordinary talent, which made them quite useful.
I am pleased to be reunited with them.
At the Seat of the Aspects

The view from here has given me more ample perspective than I originally imagined.

Gossip Aspect of Storms?
A title I chose myself, for many reasons.
Blessed by Azeroth, our world's primal fury now courses through me--relentless as a hailstorm, howling with frozen winds. I stand as well for the Thorignir and the Netherwing, and the storms they call home.
And finally, I sought to honor my fallen sister one final time. Razsageth[sic], the Storm-Eater, who gave me the gift of freedom. One that I would share with all dragonkind.
