“This unusual brood of dragons was spawned from the eggs of Deathwing's black dragonflight, and infused with raw nether-energies. Now, they seek to find their identity beyond the shadows of their father's destructive heritage.”

Netherwing's reputation journal

Nether dragons are an unorthodox brood of ethereal dragons whose bodies are composed of energies from the Twisting Nether. They all can trace their origins back to eggs of the black dragonflight taken through the Dark Portal by Deathwing, which were accidentally exposed to a great deal of nether energies when Draenor was torn apart. Free of any bonds to their parent dragonflight, the nether dragons now seek a new life in the turbulent, and often hostile, world of Outland. The major portion of these dragonkin are part of the Netherwing dragonflight.

After joining the Valdrakken Accord on Azeroth, the Netherwing came to be represented by Vyranoth as their aspect, serving as the newly dubbed Aspect of Storms, who also represents the Thorignir.

Life cycle and appearance

Nether dragons and their various appearances.

Nether dragons are highly unstable. As a result, they age rapidly but soon burn themselves out as their energies fade, giving them considerably shorter lifespans than other dragons.[1]

Nether dragons, as with all other dragons, go through various life stages before they are fully grown. These stages are divided into whelps, drakes and dragons. Whelps are the children of their kind, while drakes are adolescents and young adults. The oldest of their kind become dragons, though they appear to still grow in some capacity as far older dragons are usually larger than their younger kindred. Traditional dragons look largely the same, akin to an immense lizard with four legs and wings sprouting along their spine. In their youthful stages, whelps seem to exclusively travel by way of flight, with older dragons flying or walking depending on their whims.

Nether drakes in particular have an ethereal form that gradually appears to grow more and more translucent as they age, giving them a unique appearance in contrast to their Azerothian brethren. Unlike dragons from Azeroth, whose skin tone is usually a specific color depending on their brood, the nether dragons appear to come in a variety of hues. Their adult form, however, has only appeared thus far as a transparent teal.

History

Origins

The birth of the first nether dragon in Outland as seen in Nexus Point (presumably Barthamus).

Following the Second War, the Black Aspect Deathwing traveled through the Dark Portal to Draenor, seeking a sanctum for his final clutch that could evade the notice of the other Aspects. Believing Draenor to be a relatively safe haven for his offspring, he hid a cache of black dragon eggs deep within a mountainous region of Gorgrond, where he believed he could protect his vulnerable whelps and replenish the numbers of his dying black dragonflight.[2]

During the course of the Invasion of Draenor, the Sons of Lothar waged war against Deathwing, who eventually suffered a terrible wound that required his retreat from the orcish homeworld. Shortly after Deathwing's escape came the shattering of Draenor, which happened when Ner'zhul recklessly opened multiple portals on Draenor, causing the magical stress to tear the planet apart. This catastrophic event caused the lands of Frostfire Ridge to crash into Gorgrond, creating what is now the Blade's Edge Mountains. Despite such incredible upheaval, the black dragon eggs survived; however, they were twisted by the wild cascade of energies released upon the planet's destruction. The result was a new type of ethereal dragon composed of energy drawn from the Twisting Nether.[2]

Without Deathwing's guidance, these otherworldly nether drakes ended up finding their own way among the blasted ruins of Outland.[3] Though many inherited their temperament from their forefathers, the nether dragons exhibited no signs of the corruption that had long plagued their black dragon kin, even while on Azeroth.[2]

The Frozen Throne

WC3Reforged-icon.png This section concerns content related to Warcraft III: Reforged.

After the Third War, nether dragons were part of Magtheridon's Forces and were encountered by Illidan Stormrage, Kael'thas Sunstrider, Lady Vashj, and their blood elf and naga armies when they were closing dimensional gateways across Outland.[4]

Nexus Point

Comics title.png This section concerns content related to the Warcraft manga or comics.

During the invasion of Outland, the death knight Ragnok Bloodreaver sought to overthrow Illidan Stormrage and become the new Lord of Outland and, eventually, Azeroth. To these ends, he united a band of fel orcs under his strict rule and bargained with Kadavan, an ethereal mercenary, in order to gain his help with enslaving nether drakes and dragons to bolster his forces.[5]

Seeking to consolidate their power in an alliance with Illidan, Warchief Zuluhed the Whacked of the Dragonmaw clan captured the newly discovered netherwing dragons to ensure a continuous supply of mounts for his dragonriders.[6] The orc failed to anticipate, however, the plans of Ragnok who eventually managed to defeat the orcs, and took their surviving warriors and nether dragons to strengthen his army. While investigating the source of a strange yet familiar energy emanating from Outland, Tyrygosa was attacked by Ragnok, who sought to capture more dragons for his army. Though initially suspicious of the blue dragon, Zzeraku of the netherwing was eventually drawn to Tyrygosa's story of the black dragonflight and her belief that the nether dragons could trace their origins back to Deathwing's lost eggs.[7]

Ragnok later set out to conquer the Dark Portal with his army. His machinations were ultimately foiled by Jorad Mace and a combined Alliance, Horde, Aldor, Silver Hand, and Broken army, who defeated his forces at the Stair of Destiny. Though their trust of each other remained tenuous, Tyrygosa and Zzeraku also worked together to free his enthralled brood-mates during an attack on the Dark Portal.[7] During the battle, Jorad destroyed Ragnok's control device and called on the Light to defeat him. With their leader dead and losing the nether dragons' support, the Alliance and Horde armies drove off the remains of Ragnok's forces.

The nether flight's victory, however, was short-lived after Tyrygosa realized that freedom from Ragnok's control device would result in the brood's deaths unless the dragons were given an incredible source of power to feed upon. Believing that the Nexus could offer the energy they required, Tyrygosa, Kadavan, and Zzeraku opened a dimensional rift to Azeroth and brought a group of enthralled and injured nether dragons to the blues' lair.[7]

Yet Zzeraku and the nether dragons grew mad with power, and frustrated with everyone they've ever encountered trying to use them, decided to be masters of their own destinies and conquer Azeroth for themselves. Tyrygosa tried to reason with Zzeraku, telling him that by following Deathwing's path, Azeroth would rise up against them leading to their destruction. Though conflicted with Tyrygosa's sincere concern for his kind, Zzeraku believed that only by gaining power could he safeguard his people. The Netherwing dragons attacked the blue dragonflight, and in the midst of the chaos, Malygos woke up from his slumber. In his insanity, Malygos saw Zzeraku's brood as invaders and, without mercy, consumed nearly all of them.[7] The dragons' nether-warped physiology began to affect the Spell-Weaver himself, ultimately helping him regain some of his lost sanity.[8] With his sanity restored to him, Tyrygosa's patron declared war on mortal spellcasters, sending his flight out to do his bidding.

Being unable to guide the nether dragons to a better end weighed heavily on Tyrygosa. She later returned to Outland where she decided to look after a new generation of Netherwing eggs.[9]

The Burning Crusade

At some point, the Netherwing were attacked by the Dragonmaw orcs of Shadowmoon Valley and many were enslaved by Zuluhed the Whacked, including Karynaku, their broodmother and matriarch who was imprisoned within Dragonmaw Fortress after Ragnok Bloodreaver's raid on the Dark Portal. Her mate Neltharaku led the Netherwing in multiple attempts at freeing her, but they all ended in failure.[6] Other nether dragons were also enslaved by the Dragonmaw and those free had taken to skies and feared landing and falling pray to the orcish war parties,[10] which resulted in some falling dead from exhaustion before their bodies hit the ground. In time, the prince of the Netherwing Mordenaku was able to recruit adventurers to help him gather food for his brethren, who swooped down to eat the offered meal before they returned to the air.[11] The dragons subsequently informed Neltharaku who remarked that their deeds were heroic.[12]

Requiring time to devise a plan, Neltharaku tasked the adventurers to lay chaos and confusion among the orcs in Dragonmaw Fortress.[13] He subsequently sent them to acquire the Nethervine Crystal, which he imbued with his own essence,[14] and gave them the Enchanted Nethervine Crystal to free his children from their captors. With the deed done, he mused that perhaps they were the heroes of their flight.[15] Though ashamed to ask for their assistance, once more, Neltharaku requested that they also free his mate with the assistance of the Netherwing once a break appeared in the Dragonmaw defenses.[16] After they killed Zuluhed and freed Karynaku,[17] Mordenaku welcomed them with open arms - as brothers to the Netherwing dragonflight.[18]

Mordenaku later sent word to his allies that since their lands were lost, their children stolen in the night, forced into slavery or worse, it was now time to retake what was theirs.[19] He revealed that Netherwing Ledge, which was once a bastion of sanctuary for the Netherwing, was now home to the Dragonmaw clan. However, the Netherwing magic was still strong and thus he cloaked the adventurers' identity, allowing them to infiltrate the ranks of the orcs. He prepared a forged letter, from Teron Gorefiend to Overlord Mor'ghor, and sent them on their way.[20] Upon their arrival to the Dragonmaw camp, Yarzill the Merc revealed themselves as an agent of the Netherwing here to aid them.[21] Together, they regularly poisoned the orcs to thin their numbers,[22] but also recovered many Netherwing relics[23] and netherwing eggs.[24][25]

After adventurers reached the rank of highlord, Mordenaku's magic was discovered and shattered by Illidan Stormrage. However before the Dragonmaw could attack, Yarzill revealed themselves and spirited them to the safety of Shattrath.[26]

Another brood of nether dragons could be found at the Celestial Ridge in Netherstorm, which was ruled by the corrupted crazed Veraku. Along with Jorad Mace, Tyrygosa of the blue dragonflight tasked adventurers to defeat Veraku[27] and then took control of the brood for their own safety and to study their physiology,[28] as she has sworn herself to the noble task of safeguarding what remains of the nether brood after the tragic events at the Nexus.[29]

Though it is unknown how Zzeraku escaped Malygos' wrath within the Nexus, his survival turned out to be quite brief. After wandering Azeroth for a time, Zzeraku was captured by Zendarin Windrunner using the Balacgos's Bane.[7] When Zendarin delivered the nether dragon Zzeraku to his mistress Sintharia, the black dragon little by little fed him to her newest creation, the twilight dragon Dargonax hidden deep within Grim Batol, and along him, the first generation of the twilight dragonflight.[7] As the draenei priestess Iridi attempted to free him, Zzeraku flew into a rage when he saw harm done to her — breaking free of his bonds and engaging Dargonax in a battle that led them out of the halls of Grim Batol. There Dargonax fully absorbed the dying nether dragon, who had decided to try and save Iridi at the cost of his own life. His sacrifice was not in vain, however, as he catalyzed the minor defective part within the twilight dragon that Iridi and her allies were able to exploit and finally defeat.[30]

Captured to fuel the Twilight dragonflight.

Following the Cataclysm, one of the nether drakes was captured within the Halls of Awakening of Blackrock Caverns by the Twilight's Hammer.[31] Corla, Herald of Twilight used his raw energies to transform the "worthy" into drakonid. Ultraxion was also said to spend his life absorbing the essence of captured nether dragons.[32]

The said nether drake and dragons might possibly be a gift from Lady Sintharia, who abducted many of the Netherwing eggs with the help of Overlord Mor'ghor in Outland.[33]

Dragonflight

Dragonflight-Icon-Inline.png This section concerns content related to Dragonflight.

Years later, seeking allies to help defend Amirdrassil from Fyrakk, Wrathion sent an invitation to the Netherwing to meet him in Valdrakken. Their prince Mordenaku came to the Dragon Isles,[34] and as he met with Wrathion and Vyranoth, he was pleased to also reunite with the adventurer who aided his flight during the Invasion of Outland. In light of requesting the Netherwing to go to war against the Primalists, Mordenaku inquired as they would give in return, to which Vyranoth subsequently pointed out that with Outland being a harsh place their flight would benefit from a safer home on the isles, and that the mountains of Thaldraszus would serve as their new roost.[35]

With this agreement, the Netherwing formally joined Valdrakken Accord and the group set off towards the cave above the Sand-Lost Sanctum. Upon their arrival, Mordenaku admitted that he was unsettled over the fact the land was pristine and not shattered as Outland. However, he also thought that it was a good kind of unsettling.[36] When Vyranoth decided to remain behind to ensure the whelps were safe until the rest of the flight arrived, the price thanked and informed her that his kin should be along very soon. As Mordenaku and Wrathion set off to meet with Mother Elion at the Ruby Lifeshrine, he learned of Wrathion's origins, which caused him to remark about how the netherwing had developed their own flight and culture.[37] When Elion asked if the netherwing whelps had any special accommodations, he admitted that anything did they was normal to them but could be called unique to others. In order to ensure that the whelps would receive the best of care, it was decided that one of the netherwing would arrive to speak with Elion.[38] Mordenaku also informed the champion, that while they were already popular among the flight for freeing them, their legend would double after this day.[39]

Following the end of the war against the Primalists, the Netherwing dragonflight ultimately united with the storm dragons of Stormheim and a number of proto-dragons under the leadership of Vyranoth after she became the Aspect of Storms.[40]

Culture

Nether dragons vary from being highly friendly to mortal races to downright hostile towards all beings, many inherited the same ferocious temperament as their black dragon forbears, but there is something entirely alien about them. They often see themselves as orphans, abandoned on Draenor as it began to shatter, uncared for and unwanted by their father. The energies that changed also allow them to hatch and mature at a far more rapid pace than other dragons.[41]

They are fully sentient intelligent beings and speak Draconic like normal dragons. They also share the ability to learn magic and take visage forms.

Nomenclature

Nether dragon names tend to have an "-aku" or "-ku" at the end. Others have names similar to those of their predecessors of the black dragonflight.

Official info

From Nether Drake info from official EU Burning Crusade (En) site:

Beyond the Untamed Horizon

Nether drake
Less than twenty years ago, the orcs' former homeworld, Draenor, was ripped apart by the violent energies of several dimensional portals that tore the very fabric of the planet to pieces. This catastrophic event left Draenor a broken, shattered world that the survivors came to call Outland. To this day, some parts of Outland are still unreachable by foot or boat, floating eerily on the horizon as silent reminders of the terrible fate that befell Draenor. Yet, the denizens of Outland have adapted and learned to harness some of the indigenous species as flying mounts, allowing adventurers to reach even the most remote and dangerous regions of this wild, untamed world.
One of the most exciting new features of World of Warcraft: The Burning Crusade will be the introduction of a new kind of mount that will provide players with unprecedented freedom to explore the world of Outland from an entirely new perspective. After reaching level 70, players will eventually be able to obtain a flying mount for their characters. Outland is home to incredibly varied and exotic fauna, and the sapient inhabitants of this world have trained several unique creatures as flying mounts. Both Horde and Alliance will have their own special type of mount, but there are also mounts that will be extremely rare even among the most powerful characters. The nether drake is one of these.
With flying mounts, players will be able to take to the skies, to soar among the crimson clouds of Hellfire Peninsula or watch as Nagrand's sea of grass swaying in the breeze far below as they make their way to new lands. Players will have full control over their flying mounts, allowing them to roam the skies and freely explore all regions of Outland. In fact, certain areas of Outland will only be accessible by air, as some parts of the ruined world are floating out in the void, unreachable except by those who command one of Outland's flying creatures.
A few of these "unlockable" areas are actually located near some of the lower-level regions of Outland; a player's journey will take them through the Dark Portal to the very ends of Outland and finally back to where they started, thus completing the circle – but now they will be able to access regions that were previously only viewable from a distance. Some dungeons also feature wings that can't be reached without a flying mount, and this should provide players with a profound sense of advancement after having gained considerable experience, new abilities, and powerful weapons and armor. In a way, the flying mount represents the most tangible accomplishment of a character's progress up to level 70, but it also serves as a key to the content that awaits players beyond the maximum level.

Origin of the Nether Drakes

Note: The information was changed from partially corporeal and partially ethereal dragons who possess the ability to shift between the astral and physical planes to ethereal dragons whose bodies are composed of energies from the Twisting Nether during an update of the official site.
Two years after the end of the Second War, the black dragon Deathwing traveled through the Dark Portal to Draenor. Believing the world to be a relatively safe haven for his offspring, he secreted away a number of black dragon eggs before he returned to Azeroth. When Ner'zhul recklessly opened multiple new portals on Draenor, the magical stress tore the planet apart. The energies released in this catastrophe altered Deathwing's eggs, resulting in the nether drakes: ethereal dragons whose bodies are composed of energies from the Twisting Nether. Without Deathwing's guidance, these otherworldly nether drakes are just now finding their own way among the blasted ruins of Outland.

In Warcraft III

WC3RoC-logo.png This section concerns content related to Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos or its expansion The Frozen Throne.

In Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne, nether dragons, nether drakes, and nether dragon hatchlings poured out of the dimensional gateways. They were implied to have demonic origins and were shown to have been brought to Outland by Magtheridon, having come from another world or the Twisting Nether through his gates.[42]

In Warcraft III: Reforged, these nether dragons instead look similar to the World of Warcraft version, appearing to have retconned this origin.

In the RPG

Icon-RPG.png This section contains information from the Warcraft RPG which is considered non-canon.

A Nether dragon from Shadows & Light.

TFT's explanation was referenced in the RPG and expanded upon;

Nether dragons, unrelated to real dragons and composed of pure nether energy, feast upon magic and minds.[43] Nether dragons' original environment is the Twisting Nether and those worlds open to it, such as Outland.[44][45] The spectral form of this creature vaguely resembles a dragon, with ghostly wings, jaws, and talons. Its shape shifts constantly, however, appearing insubstantial and ephemeral. Vibrant colors shoot through its pale body. Nether dragons are composed of nether energy and are only partially corporeal. Nether dragons are highly resistant to magic. Though nether dragons often resemble true dragons, most scholars believe them to be unrelated. Nether dragons are composed of pure nether energy, and as such are beings of chaos.
They feed on mana and magic of all kinds and constantly patrol the Twisting Nether and those worlds open to it, such as Outland, for nourishment. Nether dragons are unallied with the Burning Legion or any other faction, and so pose a threat to any they encounter. Though intelligent, nether dragons do not speak. They can communicate telepathically but rarely choose to do so.
A nether dragon uses its greater arcane sight to home in on areas of powerful magic. It usually uses ethereal jaunt to approach invisibly, then unleashes its nether disjunction ability, quickened greater dispel magic, and a flurry of attacks against spellcasters. A nether dragon ignores nonspellcasters unless they inflict significant damage. A nether dragon uses its nether disjunction ability as often as it can, and uses quickened greater dispel magic every round on whichever foe has the most active spell effects. If severely injured, a nether dragon attempts to flee via ethereal jaunt.[45] They are cousins of netherwyrms, although some believe that netherwyrms are full-grown nether dragons.[46][47]

In a short story in Shadows & Light, the protagonists of the tale had eight nether dragons circling around them, and beyond the nether dragons a full-grown netherwyrm. They killed off half the drakes, but the mother was roaring to call more of her children.[46]

Age groups
  • Nether Hatchling
  • Nether Drake
  • Nether Dragon (aka Nether Drake)[48]
  • Netherwyrm - A netherwyrm is also the "mature dragon" from age group after nether dragon.

As a companion

Notes and trivia

  • According to Archmage Khadgar, there are drakonid serving nether dragons,[49] while ascendants are in service of the Dragonmaw clan and were created from nether dragons.[50]
  • Contrary to the oft-incorrect  [Draconic Compendium, Volume IV], netherwing dragons can and do shift into visage forms.[2]
  • The creation of the nether dragons is similar to what happened to the ethereals, with both races being mutated by the arcane energies of the Twisting Nether during a planet's destruction.
  • Despite their whelps and drakes receiving new models by the time of Dragonflight, nether dragons continue to use the same models as they had in The Burning Crusade. This may be due to the relatively minor role they played in Dragonflight, with only Neltharaku and Karynaku showing up in their dragon forms (and as effectively a cameo at that).
  • An early description on the official website for The Burning Crusade had them described as "partially corporeal and partially ethereal dragons who possess the ability to shift between the astral and physical planes." The website was however changed instead to describe them as "ethereal dragons whose bodies are composed of energies from the Twisting Nether."[3]
  • Arcane wyrms uses a model named "Netherdragon". It resembles a transparent, brightly colored serpentine dragon. There is concept art of this creature which can be seen in a corner of the map of Outland and also in the first official trailer for The Burning Crusade. As of Wrath of the Lich King, this model is used for arcane wyrms, which might possibly be a larger or more evolved form of the mana wyrm. Any apparent connection to the Nether Dragons seems to have been removed.
