Scalecommander Sarkareth is one of the five Scalecommanders of the dracthyr. He originally led the Ebon Scales, but now leads the Sundered Flame which is composed of lesser dragonkin who are rebelling against the five dragonflights. He serves as one of the main antagonists of the second story arc of Dragonflight, alongside Fyrakk, and is the final boss of Aberrus, the Shadowed Crucible.

History

Ancient past

Sarkareth was one of the dracthyr created by Neltharion, who would come to select him to serve as the Scalecommander of the Ebon Scale. Neltharion fashioned the Forbidden Reach as a secret training ground for the dracthyr,[1][2] where at his command Sarkareth would train the Ebon Scales to bring destruction to the enemies of the black dragonflight, raining down fire and unleashing spellcraft upon those who would stand against the Earth-Warder.[3] In a battle with Raszageth and the Primal Incarnates, the titan relic that Neltharion used to control the wills of the dracthyr was destroyed. Though Raszageth was sealed away, Neltharion could no longer directly control the dracthyr without the relic and so deemed them a risk.[4]

Sarkareth and his people were thus subsequently ordered to the creches beneath the Forbidden Reach by Neltharion, where they were sealed away by Malygos in magical stasis and watched over by his blue dragonflight. They remained there, abandoned and forgotten for nearly 20,000 years, awakened from their long slumber only when the Primalists returned to break Raszageth free, as an ancient, magical surge rippled through the Forbidden Reach, the dracthyr awoke, but from their long stasis their memories became a blur.[5][2]

Forbidden Reach

Sarkareth in N [70] Unusual Suspects.

20,000 years later, the Ebon Scales found their creche besieged by the proto-dragon Ekrazathal and an elemental army led by Kurog Grimtotem. Scalecommander Sarkareth and his troops slayed the proto-dragon with the aid of Scalecommander Azurathel, Dervishian, and an evoker adventurer, but claimed they had it under control.[6] He was reluctant to rally to Scalecommander Emberthal, only taking orders from the Earth-Warder himself, but relented after acknowledging the threat of the Primalists. He agreed to aid them until they found Neltharion and mobilized the Ebon Scales after they collected the signets of the fallen.[7]

The entire dracthyr army then gathered as one and was soon joined by Ebyssian and Wrathion. The dracthyr and dragons then rallied to the Froststone Vault in order to prevent the Primalists from freeing the Raszageth, an effort they would ultimately fail at. The Storm-Eater taunted Ebyssian over Neltharion's death and unleashed her elemental power, creating a great storm over the island.[8] The group was forced to flee from Raszageth's fury, rallying to the safety of the ruins of the combined Dark Talons and Obsidian Warders creche. Incredulous that Neltharion was truly dead, Sarkareth demanded answers from the black dragons, who confirmed his demise.[9] It was there that they were joined by Nozdormu, who declared that the kingdoms of Azeroth had to be warned of Raszageth's release. With the Reach blanketed by Raszageth's storm, the dracthyr were forced to abandon their home. Azurathel and the Obsidian Warders decided to join with Wrathion, who would guide them to the Alliance. Before they departed, Azurathel requested that Sarkareth and his Ebon Scales join them; however, Sarkareth refused. Feeling betrayed by Neltharion, he declared their vow to the dragons was "sundered" and renamed his weyrn to the Sundered Flame, declaring that they would claim their destiny by right.[10]

The Sundered Flame plundered the Dragon Isles, searching for anything that would help them claim their legacy, and frequently came into conflict with its inhabitants or members of the Dragonscale Expedition.[11][12][13] After learning that the Dragonscale Expedition had potentially found a way inside a Titan facility in Tyrhold, he snuck into Valdrakken and stole a Watcher Log, believing it would lead him to the power of Titans. He deployed Sundered Flame agents to the Azure Span, Ohn'ahran Plains, and Veiled Ossuary to gather the fragments to unlock the vault.[14] However, the Expedition was able to secure its contents first. Sarkareth then disguised himself as a researcher and infiltrated Dragonscale Basecamp, stealing their research on the facility before being discovered.[15]

After Raszageth's death, he and the Sundered Flame returned to the Forbidden Reach to reclaim their home, however, the Primal Incarnates arrived as well. He spied on them as they breached one of Neltharion's vaults and took a device that contained the location of Aberrus, Neltharion's secret laboratory, and ordered Winglord Dezran to follow them.[16] Emberthal and the other dracthyr soon returned to the reach with the aid of the Dragonscale Expedition. Refusing to let them claim it, he ambushed her scouting party and killed several Talons.[17][18] The Sundered Flame tried to plunder the creches of the other weyrns and harassed the Expedition's camps, but were stopped by an adventurer.[19][20] He lured Emberthal to Dragonskull Island, where Neltharion put the dracthyr through grueling trials, and argued with her over Neltharion's legacy. Emberthal wanted them to find a new future, while Sarkareth believed they were owed Neltharion's power. He tried to goad her into combat, but Ebyssian stayed her hand. He and the Sundered Flame then departed, warning that if she followed him, he would kill her.[21]

Embers of Neltharion

Sarkareth wielding the Oathbinder.

He watched as the Incarnates opened a way into Zaralek Cavern near Valdrakken and followed Fyrakk underground, unaware that that was what Iridikron wanted.[22] His quest for the Earth-Warder's secrets led him to Nal ks'kol, a titan vault that Neltharion claimed for himself. He learned that it contained the keys to Aberrus, copies of Neltharion's plans and bases, as well as a powerful artifact.[23] The Sundered Flame established a camp near the vault and captured Rannan Korren and Tuberros when they came to investigate.[24] As a Scalecommander, he was able to access VOX, the Vault Observation eXecutor, and entered with Dezran, Amythora, and Marithos.[25] Emberthal, Ebyssian, and an adventurer pursued him to the vault and confronted him after they defeated Dezran. However, Sarkareth found the artifact within Nal ks'kol, a partially repaired Oathbinder, and attempted to enslave Emberthal and the other dracthyr in the room. The adventurer defeated Sarkareth and separated Oathbinder from him, allowing Emberthal to destroy it. Emberthal tried to reason with him, but Sarkareth claimed that Neltharion called to him, drawing him to Aberrus. He ordered VOX to teleport him away and abandoned Marithos and Amythora, who defected to Emberthal's cause.[26]

Sarkareth arrived at Brimstone Garrison and allied himself with the remaining dragonkin loyal to Neltharion. He tried to use the remains of Oathbinder to access Aberrus, but Emberthal and Ebyssian intercepted him. Despite their efforts, the loyalists held them off long enough for Sarkareth to seize control of the Garrison. With command over Neltharion's loyalists, he withdrew behind the Garrison's defenses.[27] Emberthal and Ebyssian regrouped with Wrathion and Sabellian and breached the garrison with the aid of the Blacktalon and Obsidian Brood.[28] Sarkareth drew on the power of Aberrus to shield himself while he searched for a way in but was stopped by Emberthal.[29] She offered him a final chance to stop before he led their people to ruin, but he refused and flew into Aberrus, adamant to answer Neltharion's call. Sabellian and Wrathion pursued him into the laboratory, refusing to let him claim their father's legacy, but Emberthal ended her chase, tired of fighting her own kin. Ebyssian also abstained, recognizing that the only legacy their father left behind was one of death, a lesson his brothers must learn for themselves.[30] Within Aberrus, Sarkareth unleashed Neltharion's experiments to slow the black dragons, even at the cost of his soldiers. At the bottom of the crucible, he found what Neltharion was hiding within the laboratory, the power of the Void, and was fully consumed by the darkness. He was brought down by adventurers, and in his final moments pondered Neltharion's legacy, how he followed him as a loyal soldier, only to be led to oblivion.

Fury Incarnate

After his death, most of the Sundered Flame continued to carry out his mission, unaware of the circumstance that led to his demise, while others abandoned the cause, including Winglord Dezran. With Dezran gone, Quartermaster Doros assumed leadership of the Sundered Flame and they ambushed Amythora and Marithos at the Lonely Falls in the Azure Span, capturing the latter.[31] They tortured Marithos for his betrayal, but he was rescued by Emberthal, Amythora, and an adventurer. They tried to negotiate with Doros, but he refused and fought to the death under the banner of the Sundered Flame.[32] The Sundered Flame moved to take revenge for Doros, but Dezran arrived and convinced them to become the Ebon Scales once more. He told them that Sarkareth's path only led to ruin and he relinquished command to Emberthal. Emberthal accepted her position as their new Scalecommander, but wished to retain Dezran as Winglord.[33] With the Ebon Scales reborn, they returned to Valdrakken where Emberthal pledged to work to bring the dracthyr together.[34]
