Valdrakken is the capital of the dragonflights located in Thaldraszus. It was founded in the ancient era of the Dragon Isles and has been the center of the ordered flights since its inception. The city is the culmination of all the dragons' efforts and provides several vignettes to enjoy, from the blue dragonflight's public library to the red and green dragonflights own separate gardens.[1] This bejeweled city is a feast for the eyes and ears, with waterfalls cascading down the mountain surrounding the city and breathtaking views overlooking nearby Tyrhold, serving as a testament to the power of cooperation between the dragonflights and dragonkin.[2] The city's guards are the Scalesworn led by Captain Drine.[3] It served as the main hub for the adventurers during the events of World of Warcraft: Dragonflight.[4]

History

Ancient times

Though much of the surrounding territory is shaped by titan-forged architecture, the draconic culture left behind its own distinct mark, among the most splendid of their creations its the glorious city of Valdrakken. From the Seat of the Aspects, the Dragon Aspects guided the vast lands of Azeroth[5] and ruled all of dragonkind with wisdom. Each flight is represented by an enclave within the city, including the Obsidian Enclave, Sapphire Enclave, Bronze Enclave, Emerald Enclave, and Ruby Enclave. Because of the Great Sundering, much of the Dragon Isles' magic was drained away and the dragons were forced to leave their homeland, including Valdrakken, in the care of the titanic watchers, drakonid, and dragonspawn that were left behind.[6]

Dragonflight

Following the awakening of the Dragon Isles, the dragonflights returned to their most ancient city[7] along with their mortal allies of the Dragonscale Expedition. From their shining capital, the Valdrakken Accord was formed by the unified dragonflights to represent the might of all dragonkind, working harmoniously to carry out their orders.[8] At the request of Queen Alexstrasza, Captain Drine of the Scalesworn and the adventurers hunted down the Primalists who infiltrated Valdrakken in an attempt to sway the citizens against the Dragon Aspects with their propaganda.[9][10]

In the Artisan's Market, the Artisan's Consortium was eventually allowed to set up their camps to start trading. After the official reopening of the Algeth'ar Academy, the staff made several orders to artisans in Valdrakken for supplies, including alchemic solutions for the future exams,[11] and enchanting rods for the enchantment formations.[12]

Meanwhile, Instigator Belaphon gathered numerous drakonid and dragonspawn who felt disvalued and looked down upon by the dragons, leaving Valdrakken to start an active rebellion as the Flightless.[13] The rebels stationed at Scalewatch Caverns in Thaldraszus notably ambushed civilians along the roads to Valdrakken until heroes were tasked to halt their operations.[14] When Investigator Erima discovered they stockpiled explosives beneath the city to collapse the aqueduct from Tyrhold,[15] he sent the adventurer to kill Agitator Zoralek and recover his detonator, saving the capital.[16]

In order to defend Amirdrassil from Fyrakk, Wrathion sent a diplomatic invitation to the Netherwing dragonflight in Outland to meet in Valdrakken.[17] The nether dragons in return sent Prince Mordenaku to serve as their representative. After they negociated that the mountains of Thaldraszus near the capital would serve as their roost,[18] the Netherwing formally joined the Valdrakken Accord.[19]

Exploring Azeroth

In Year 42 ADP, as Thalyssra and Lor'themar Theron traveled across the isles of Azeroth for a honeymooning spot, they eventually visited Valdrakken with Wrathion as their guide. The capital was described to be as lively and populous as any Alliance and Horde cities, with its own merchants and restaurants, and streets both on the ground and in the air.[20]

Getting there

Valdrakken is located in the west-central area of Thaldraszus. As the entirety of the Dragon Isles is designed to be traversable by air, it is possible to reach Valdrakken as soon as one has unlocked Skyriding. It is easily accessible from the Waking Shores by flying east from the Ruby Life Pools and can be reached by land with ease from most of Thaldraszus. Various flight paths in all of the zones connect back to Valdrakken as well.

It can also be reached through portals in the Pathfinder's Den in Orgrimmar and the Wizard's Sanctum (mage tower) in Stormwind City.

Geography

The Serene Dreams Spa is an offshoot of the city.[21]
